“That Is The Struggle, Right? To Stay The Course”

November 7th, 2013

Yesterday, Greg Schiano told the Miami media that he’s committed to his coaching methods and core beliefs and his Bucs will “stay the course” and perfect their craft, not panic.

The “stay the course” line brought back memories for Joe.

When Raheem Morris was unveiled as head coach he repeatedly preached “stay the course” at his opening day news conference. It was baffling to Joe at the time for two reasons: the Bucs just choked away a playoff berth with four straight losses, and if the team wanted to “stay the course,” then it could have just, you know, kept its Super Bowl winning coach who had three years left on his contract.

Of course, it turned out the Bucs had no plan to “stay the course,” cutting Derrick Brooks and other veterans, and then fattening up defensive linemen to play a brand new two-gap scheme on defense (which was scrapped halfway through the season.)

“We have a process that we go through every week. And we try to outprepare ourselves every week. We have a strong belief in preparation. And that’s kind of where we are right now,” Schiano said yesterday. “The results have not been what we wanted, which that is the struggle, right? to stay the course. We’ve played some good football, just not winning football, not enough to win.”

Joe gets Schiano’s commitment to his processes, but perhaps he needs to be more open to changes — quickly. The course has to be questioned when you lose 13 out of 14.

They are different and more radical scenarios, but Joe looks at what Raheem did when he fired Jim Bates and changed the defense midseason, or how John Fox overhauled his Denver offense to get to the playoffs with Tim Tebow.

Perhaps Schiano needs to change and adjust more than he wants to. The Bucs are playing extremely hard for him but not winning.

Not going to repeat myself. See my previous comments about guys unwillingness to change. This guy’s an ass

  2. bucfanjeff Says:

Schiano is an un-adaptable coach and that trait never works out very well.
You must be willing and able to adapt your scheme around your players to truly succeed. When we get a coach that will do that, we will be winners again.

    HA!!!!! HA HA!!!!!!!!!!

By “stay the course” did you mean the 20 grit “course” of sandpaper you keep trying to convince everyone to wipe their ass with in this crap “struggle”?

This is going beyond stupid funny….its “stunted” logic and mentality…..Glazers are guilty of it too, especially now!!!!!!

    YA THINK?

  5. buc4lyfe Says:

CYA for greg schiano should be firing bill sheridan and calling his own damn defense since he’s the only one that knows what it’s supposed to be like, since he’s the one trying to get them right every second half

why let bill sheridan get you fired? Nothing going on at one bucs place makes any sense, we got this type team that seems like the wanna pack up in the middle of the night and move out of tampa in the middle of the night

but thanks for the perspective schiano because when you cant live and breathe buc football because the team is good and the coach sucks….you realize who cares its not that big of a deal if they suck or not….i think im more pissed that they lifted the black out

  6. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Schiano is definitely willing to change and adapt. The problem is he does it too slowly for an NFL head coach. He isn’t flexible enough to adapt at a pace that will save his job. It takes him several games to make adjustments that the best head coaches will make in a single game or even in a single half. That’s unfortunate for him, and for the 2013 Bucs.

  7. Capt. Tim Says:

He actually changed a lot of things last week, in the first half. He was letting his OC call the plays. And it worked.

But Schiano couldn’t stay with it. He doesn’t trust anyone but himself- and his schemes, well, they suck.
It’s why he won’t succeed at this level. He can’t stop trying to force his way on everyone. And his way doesn’t work.
First half looked so good. But start of Second half- he’s holding a play sheet, wearing the QB Mike- and we start a series of 5 “3 and outs”.

    But he still couldn’t stop.

When presented with complete success, he still chose to revert to what has failed him all season.

That is an issue that can’t be fixed. He won’t get better, because he believes he great now! Just needs better execution.

It’s funny….Schiano had the team performing so poorly over the first 7 games, that the moment he has one good game against a good team, people are willing to buy into his bullsh*t.

Seriously, why are we giving this guy any slack? Stay the course? Does he mean go 0-16 then? Why does he get bonus points for the team playing hard??? They still lose week in and week out. I’m done with this clown.

  9. coach80m Says:

He is not smart enough to adapt. Not only is he stupid, but he does not have the requisite experience. Denver and Houston now have interim coaches, for far different reasons, why don’t we do the same? I am so upset with this clown. I hope the place empties out on MNF.

  10. buc4lyfe Says:

    @bucbucbuc

im with ya bucbucbuc i swear when it comes to the bucs i feel like i’m an alien or something, he’s getting praise for crap that doesnt matter….like freeman when everyone knew he was on his way out long before schiano got here so ok he got the kudos for making a smart decision BUT this is the same idiot that said bowers had 10 sack ability now all we hope for week to week is to get any kind of statistic from the line….forget sacks somebody register a pressure or anything

AND IM PUTTING THIS IN CAPS FOR ALL TO SEE: I SAY SCHIANO IS THE LEAK OUT OF ONE BUC PLACE FOR 1 REASONS..

    1. I REMEMBER OUR LOCAL MEDIA SAYING THE REASON THEY LET BENNETT GO WAS SOME PHANTOM SHOULDER INJURY, SOMEHOW THAT LITTLE FACT IS LOST IN SCHIANO’S X FILES FOR THAT MATTER THE SAME WAS SAID ABOUT BRENT GRIMES…DIDNT SOMEONE REPORT THE GUY COULD BARELY JUMP AND CUT DURING THE OFFSEASON HMMM…..

THIS DUMMY GOT RID OF THE ATTITUDES WHICH IS WHAT YOU NEEDED TO BE REAL DOGS ON THE LINE BECAUSE HE’S SOME KINDA INSECURE LITTLE MAN INSIDE THAT’S WHY WE GOT ALL THESE RUTGERS GUYS AND ALL THESE ROOKIES AND UNDRAFTED ROOKIES ON OUR TEAM TAKING UP SPACE. OFFSEASON IT WAS SAID THAT WIDE RECIEVER WAS OUR DEEPEST POSITION BUT WHAT HAPPENED?

ALL OF A SUDDEN OUR OFFENSE SUCKS AND YOU GOT FOOLS ON RADIO SAYING VJACK ISNT THE SAME PLAYER HE WAS LAST YEAR HAHAHA REALLY? SO PATHETIC ITS LIKE THE GOVERNMENT PUTTING OUT TO THE MEDIA WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO HEAR

  11. madmacskillz Says:

Joe, I think it’s cute to imply that there’s any snowball’s chance in hell that Schiano will be able to save his job. Is it possible? Yes – if he wins every game left on the schedule by outscoring the other time by huge margins, then yes. But realistically? It’s not even worth mentioning. He better learn how to make changes fast? It’s way too late for that.

  12. Bucfan#37 Says:

Yeah, why is it taking so long to make adjustments in a failing scheme?

  13. Architek Says:

That explains the second half collapse

  14. chickster Says:

staying the course is like wearing the same underwear for 9 weeks that’s not cool

  15. WalkdaPlank Says:

This guy makes himself sound like an idiot every time he comes to the podium.

  16. Eric Says:

I’ll take Philbin even without the nut job guard.

  17. Mr. Patrick Says:

INSANITY – Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result

  18. Harry Says:

that is my biggest grip with Schiano; he is stubborn and does NOT learn from his mistakes

  19. Tom in St Augustine Says:

please wear black socks with black shoes next time. #fashionpolice
