Shaun King: Glennon Earns “B” Grade

October 17th, 2013

Former Bucs QB Shaun King, now with NBC Sports, breaks down the Bucs’ new gunslinger.

Count former Bucs quarterback Shaun King as a guy on the Mike Glennon bandwagon. (Joe will have to ask King personally if he’s a member of the popular Mike Glennon Mob.)

King, one of three QBs to lead the Bucs to the NFC title game, was his usual candid self on the Ron and Ian show on WDAE-AM 620 this morning. King evaluated Glennon and said Glennon is nearly playing up to his personal potential.

“He’s played fine. He’s thrown to the open guy. He’s done things a young quarterback has done late in games by making mistakes. But he’s shown some positive signs.  I just don’t know if he’s ever going to be a franchise quarterback. But I mean I’m not upset with the way he’s played. He’s kind of what Greg Schiano wants. He wants a guy that’s just going to go back and throw the checkdown and hit the open guy. But it’s tough to score points in this league like that. You know, if you can’t create chunk plays on offense, and the one area he’s really struggled is throwing the ball down the field, if you can’t create chunk plays in the league it’s tough to score. You know, it’s just tough to get the football and take 11, 12 plays every time to go score points.

“But as far as how I’d grade Mike Glennon, he’d probably get a “B” from me. In a really tough situation, in all that turmoil and dysfunction, he’s come in and the game hasn’t looked bigger than him. He’s looked confident. But again, I think he’s a young quarterback that has limited potential in the first place.”

King went on to say Glennon is “more polished” than Josh Freeman when it comes to fundamentals. That’s evidence, King explained, of how the Bucs bungled the development of Freeman since he arrived in Tampa as a raw, franchise-QB-caliber talent.

Joe must agree with King’s takes above. Glennon has done well — for him — through two games. Glennon, though, has huge tests in his near future, with hitting the road to hostile domes (Altanta and Seattle) and the bright lights of primetime football against the Panthers’ third-ranked defense. His performances will be telling. (Enjoy King’s full interview below. )

For once I agree with pretty much everything he says.

  2. csidedave Says:

King saying this “That’s evidence, King explained, of how the Bucs bungled the development of Freeman since he arrived in Tampa as a raw, franchise-QB-caliber talent” is like saying that the Bucs bungled Shuan King by not developing him into a bigger handed quarterback. Some things can’t be fixed.

  3. d-money Says:

Either someone has sat Shaun King down, most likely at some sort of buffet, and told him to tone down his rhetoric or he is back on his meds.

It’s been almost two months since I’ve wanted to smash my computer screnn after listening to him.

He’s actually beginning to have what seem to be well thought out insightful takes.

  4. bucrightoff Says:

Yeah its almost a good take until he gets to the “You can’t check down and have 11-12 play drives and win in this league”. Cause yeah. Manning, Brady and Brees all rely heavily on the short to intermediate passing game and they all suck. Whats that? They don’t? They’re actually all Hall of Famers? Oh….

The notion you need a big play offense is staggeringly incorrect. Who cares if you can complete 20-30 yard passes down the field when you can’t pick up 3rd and 6?

  5. Jo_mama Says:

If mike glennon is getting a B and if you want to grade on a curve he would be getting an A+++ because Freeman sucked.

Here is the bottom line. Big Dawg has no friends on the bucs team except for Allstot and Freeman….In his mind the teams screwed them over so he attacks Gruden and Schiano.

Joe Buc is up Big Dog’s ass for air time on the radio, so he is in full agreement with Bashing Schiano.

However the facts do not support this.

Freeman threw 4 TD’s to 12 Ints in his last 6 games. You can’t blame Int’s on coaching especially in a 4 year pro who was a first round draft pick.

Not only did Freeman give up on the team, his off field actions gave a middle finger to the coach and the fans.

We are better off without Freeman and let the coach, coach our team without the BS.

  6. Kreator Says:

Why all of a sudden is SK a suddenly this great evaluator of talent?

  7. K_bassuka Says:

Of course Glennon is what Schiano wanted more like a QB that is fit to run his offense in other words a mediocre QB…

  8. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Glennon is already more effective than Freeman was. Theres a lot of upside here. As long as he has veterans around him early on (should probably get a replacement for Orlovsky to sit behind him) and sticks to improving his game, theres no law saying he can’t become a great QB in the NFL. I like what I’ve seen so far minus the 4th quarter meltdown against Arizona.

  9. Kreator Says:

Only time will tell w glennon. The bucs probably need to bring in a good free agent QB to push Glennon or learn from.

  10. BigMacAttack Says:

Well the Glazers obviously aren’t making a move this week so here we go again. I don’t think Sullivan has done a great job but this last game was a little better. I have to say that I really like thatt guy when i listen to his pressers. Schiano, I still don’t feel it with him but it is only the 6’th game. The more I have had time to cool off, the more I think that we may just beat the Falcons. I guess I’m crazy but I just have that feeling that maybe the Defense will Man to Man Up, and Glennon will continue to improve because the Falcons just aren’t very good.

But if we do lose again, Mr Hyde will manifest himself again on Sunday night.

    Go Bucs!!!

    @K_bassuka

Don’t you think every Coach has dreams of having the highest scoring offense in the NFL?

It was not long ago we had the second lowest payroll in the NFL. Freeman was a bust and Schiano has to make do with what he’s got.

Look at the giants 13th ranked salary, two time winning super bowl qb who was also a number 1 draft pick. They are also 0-5.

  12. Andrew 1 Says:

I agree with him for once, but wasnt this the same guy that said we should have hurried up and signed Freeman before the season even started?

  13. Bobby Says:

OOOOKKKKKK…..Glennonis already more fundamentally sound in two games than Freeman was in 4+ years but Freeman is the one that was a franchise QB and Glennon never will be??? Glennon has all the throws Freeman has and is more accurate and more fundamentally sound soooooo….shouldn’t HE be the guy to develop? Just sayin’…

  14. The 300s Says:

Can’t throw checkdowns all day and win games? Isn’t that what he did? I don’t recall any “chunk” plays coming from him. Oh, and I guess the Chiefs have a losing record too?

  15. Bill Says:

I turn down the radio when the great Shaun King comes on the air.

  16. k_bassuka Says:

    @Jo_mama

I know u Rutgers fans dont know this but that great HC that’s destroying this team was very clear that he wanted a run the ball first control the tempo offense. When was the last time such offense was #1 or anything close to it? Schiano SUCKS and so does Glennon, could he become good down the road? I hope so but I wouldn’t put money on it.

What this team needs next year is an NFL QB either we draft one, trade for one, or sign one end of story.

  17. Superfriend Says:

If Burger King can say something positive about the Bucs, then Glennon does have a chance. Isn’t that what this is about about, finding the “franchise” QB? Im not saying he is one, but what logical reasoning do we have yet to say he isn’t? Because he was drafted in the 3rd round? There are a lot of QB’s that would argue with that. Keep it up kid, we are watching!

  18. Bucs244 Says:

King, one of two QBs to lose an NFC Title game for the Bucs, earns a “D” grade for his school boy evaluation of Glennon – “He’s thrown to the open guy.” Ron & Ian must be desperate to fill air time. Joe too.

  19. Biff Barker Says:

Does Duemeg have any Buccaneer player shows at all now?
I think his only regulars are Chris Landry, Brooks and Joe.

  20. BucsFan68 Says:

If the losing continues, the MGM will dissipate

  21. Cameron Says:

How can all you people disagree with shaun on this point? HE IS RIGHT! take away the name josh freeman and listen…. If I told you all we had a 4000 yard QB last year, is that mediocre? If I told you in 2010 are QB had 25 tds and 6 ints, is that mediocre? I think not! Josh was a product of this college system! The idea that a HC with a 500 record in college could come in and treat world class pros like college kids is a joke! Schiano has and always will be the problem… And oh btw, Glennon is NOT accurate! Any qb in this league can make the checkdown pass or 5 yard out but have you seen his deep ball? Case closed!

  22. passthebuc Says:

King only gave Joe Montana a C+

  23. Bobby Says:

Every deep ball Glennon threw was a throw away. The receivers were covered and he was just keeping the defense honest. I didn’t see one time he missed an open receiver running free.

  24. OAR Says:

The problem with the 26tds to 6 ints is that it was 3 YEARS AGO! There’s a very relevant term here to describe Freeman’s play and it is “regression”!

  25. Jo_mama Says:

    @k_bassuka,

Actually not a fan of college teams also, I dont really care about Schiano. He is not a player. I root for the player on the team, not coaches.

The most games Freeman won in any year in college was 5 games.

I was never inspired with Freeman and his lack of running really pissed me off.

I am willing to forgive the coach for not benching freeman after the second game.

  26. K_bassuka Says:

    @Jo_mama

And what in the world Glennon and Schiano being mediocre has to do with a QB that is on another team?

I actually like Glennon but he is not going to develop into a good QB as long as Schiano is running the show…

  27. chickster Says:

With is offense the check down is their best play

  28. chickster Says:

    jo mama loves the coach

  29. chickster Says:

    is he jo boyfriend?

  30. Jo_mama Says:

I love any coach who got rid of freeman.
