What Toes On The Line?

September 8th, 2013

One reason the Bucs jettisoned Raheem Morris and brought in commander Greg Schiano was to bring discipline to the team. To bring order to what was considered a circus.

If Joe didn’t know any better, then Joe would have thought Raheem Morris was back with the club.

Penalties, dropped balls, boneheaded plays, guys not knowing situations, slow starts. Good grief, it was as if a high school team was playing at the Meadowlands today.

Yes, of course, the worst example was Lavonte David’s personal foul on a play he didn’t need to make, and one he shouldn’t have made, pushing Jets quarterback Geno Smith.

There were others. Leonard Johnson’s blatant holding penalty kept a Jets drive alive, which ended in a field goal.

Oh, and then there was Kevin Ogletree’s drop of a very catchable pass along the left sidelines, plus 13 penalties in all.

Two timeouts and a delay of game on three consecutive plays in the first half? Really? A high school coach would have had a conniption over such a stunt.

Stop with the helmet communication malfunction. You don’t think Schiano and the Bucs don’t practice for such things? There’s a reason the Bucs daily practice with fake crowd noise that is so loud you cannot hear yourself think much less what others are saying.

Joe thinks it’s pretty obvious that at least the first team offense needed just a few more snaps than what it received this summer. That Bucs offense, especially in the first half, looked rustier than a German U-Boat shipwreck off the Cayman Islands.

    Mike Zimmer anyone?

  2. Jim Says:

On the bright side, the Saints game will be blacked out so those that are smart enough not to buy tickets, won’t have to watch the game. I am stupid enough to be a season ticket holder since 1977 and will NOT renew my tickets!

  3. Ricardo Esteban Says:

yeah we sucked…but the refs were worse.

what is this pee wee they’re playing now????????

they may as well switch to flag football,.

seriously, if the NFL continues these outrageous calls I’m just going to stop watching.

  4. BuC'N'IT Says:

If the Jets go 1-15, no matter our record we will kniw what kind of team this is,
I’ve been a Buc fan my entire life and well, I dont remeber this feeling, evan with the 4-2 record only to lead to 10 loses, even thr 6-4 record to lead to 7-9 but this, this S-U-K-S Suks suks suks!!!

  5. MR.T Says:

Dallas Clark is playing for the Ravens and had 7 catches for 80 plus yards today, too bad we didn’t really pursue him, even at 34 he’s still miles ahead of anyone we have in terms of providing offense at the TE position.

  6. UK_Buc Says:

I only caught glimpses of the game on redzone here in Uk, but sounded like we really missed Lorig? Did Hillis get much time at FB? Or did we have TE’s lining up back there? Or one-back sets?

  7. MT Tom Says:

Regarding Lavonte David, I can’t fully blame him. Hayes did the sideline stutter earlier in the game for a first down. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Sure, the clock was ticking down so everyone knows Hayes should step out, but the linebacker has to make the play. He can’t just stop and watch to see if Hayes is going to put a spin move on him and squeak 10 additional yds on the play. It sucks. To me it looks like he initiated contact in bounds. I think its a crappy call by the refs especially since the QB made us pay on a similar non-sideline contact earlier. The rest… Yep, outcoached, outcoached, outcoached.

  8. BamBamBuc Says:

Interesting stat line… The Bucs had 12 first downs, 2 rushing, 10 passing. The Jets had 22 first downs, 5 rushing, 12 passing… wait, that’s only 17 first downs… Oh, so they also got 5 first downs handed to them via penalty? As good as the D was at times, it was mistakes like that that really hurt and keep the D on the field. Maybe the D was tired late in the game because they kept themselves on the field early in the game via penalty, not because the offense went 3 and out too much…. just a thought.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I can’t disagree much with Joe….I think it is sad that a pretty good defensive effort (including pass defense) was wiped out by an impotent offense. At least seven of our points came from the defense.
Doug Martin had no room to run inside and that was obvious but we continued to pound him anyway….that isn’t Doug’s fault…its not Freemans fault or Ogletree’s….its Sullivan and to some degree Schiano for not telling Sullivan to change the plan.

  10. Kirk Says:

Mr. T; The Ravens didn’t play today dude. By the way, the Raven lost. What’s your point?

  11. Bucs4life Says:

It’s just depressing. My week is shot as a result of the play of men I’ve never met and will never know. I feel pathetic.

    House cleaning is coming

  13. tonytwocents Says:

The dagger in the heart was watching that douchebag Winslow making plays, coming away as their leading receiver.

Keep Crabtree in a hyperbaric chamber 24/7 until the Saints game. Freeman NEEDS a TE!

  14. NJBucsFan Says:

Ok…been a Freeman fan, but now I am unsure. There is so much out there both ways. I am starting to be swayed towards the thought it is time to move on….just read Rotoworlds opinion. They claim he’s one of the worst QB’s in the league.

  15. MR.T Says:

my mistake that was Thur. night. The point being we had Clark here last year and should have to bring him back this year and then draft a good TE next year. He is better than anyone we have at catching the ball, that’s the point, Dude.

  16. Gus Says:

Now that the fifth preseason game is over lets get to the real games…….oh wait…..

  17. tonytwocents Says:

on another note, the personal fouls on Goldsons licks were fu(kin ridiculous. I love the dude’s tenacity! no wonder he was named captain. I hope he keeps it up, and the Glazers compensate him for any fines.

  18. lightningbuc Says:

    Buc1987,

Are you out there? Call 911!

  19. Harry Says:

I feel sorry for Clayborn, Jackson, McCoy, Revis, etc. who played very well. I O-line sucked; Stocker & Penn cant block to save their lives or Freeman’s. I don’t normally defend Freeman, but I feel bad for him to. He was very adequate today. I drove down the field to give us a go ahead score – great pass to Jackson, and TWO great passes to Ogletree; not only did Ogletree drop the one on the left sideline, but the one on the right was also his fault – that ball could have been caught inbounds if he would not have run out; he caught it just below his chest. The stupid, stupid penalties were only matched by the stupid play calling. Dougie on first down, Dougie on second, now lets put Josh in a 3rd and long all freaking day. That is how to kill your quarterback. The commentators observed that Gino smith is taken out of his rhythm when the Jets did used the wildcat. Wouldn’t the same hold true for Freeman to Jackson? No, give it to Doug, so what if the Jets were stacking the box and he is only getting 0-2 yards. This coaching SUCKS, they need to be held accountable.

  20. MR.T Says:

I meant of course catching the ball at the TE position, out of which we got no offensive production today..

  21. Kirk Says:

Dallas Clark caught a bunch of passes in the second half when the Ravens were getting it handed to them. Even if he was still here, chances are that no decent passes would come his way. Freeman can’t throw up, let alone throw a decent pass. Dude.

  22. BuC'N'IT Says:

@NjBuc Fan, is today really the game that made u change your mind on Freeman, I believe he had a good game only the one ugly pass that turned into a pick and a few more that was in no ones reach, but its hard to get to work with a lack of run gane, somthing we’ve never been abke.to accomplish in years

  23. Bob Says:

this is the worst coach team I have ever seen. Defense fighting with the Offence. And the DEFENSE loses the game….Expect Blackout games all season long.. Why do you want to go to a game and watch crap like this. Big comfy chair. 10 dollar 12 pack a bottle of Jim Beam and watch the Giants play.
Was wondering did a lineman get a sack or was it just the linebackers.

  24. ShutTheBucUp Says:

dont pull out the noose yet guys. 15 more games to go. lets hope our pro-bowl laden roster can pull it together. yes, it was ugly and embarassing, but dont feed into the negativity that is sure to follow. i saw some promising things today among the $hitshow.

  25. SteveBucsFan Says:

I think the fouls called against Goldson are the story here. A shoulder hit to the chest of the receiver is what the NFL preaches. And that is what Goldson delivered. I don’t understand what football is anymore. John Lynch would have never made it in this nfl.

Goldson was a beast and deserves an apology from the leauge. He did not target the knee or the head.

And that BS at the begining of the game with the headset and safety. That was the lowest I ever felt as a Buccaneer’s fan. But I was born in 84.

  26. 911bucs Says:

And Freeman sucks. When Are the supporters going to realize he’s not a premiere QB. Yes he is the best we have right now. Just admit it we need a better QB.

  27. BamBamBuc Says:

Very few premiere QBs in this league. Most are adequate, which is what Freeman is. He has shown an ability to consistently put the team in a position, with a lead, in the 4th quarter to win games. That’s all anyone can really ask of any QB. I’m sure people would talk completely differently about Luck, RGIII, Wilson, etc. if their D couldn’t hold ANY lead (no matter whether 1 or 10 points) with less than a minute to go in a game. Most of them would be considered busts, just like people here are talking about Freeman. Very few QBs get leads that are insurmountable to the point the D doesn’t have to do anything. Look back to the Monday Night Football game years ago with the Bucs against the Colts… no one ever thought the Colts could come back, but they did. Sometimes, the D has to hold.

  28. Anzac Buc Says:

Where I live, I had to get up at 3am to watch the game live. Now at work Monday morning, tired and pissed off. IMO the preparation and play calling on offense was extremely poor and the blocking was porous. What I really hate, is seeing a player like Leonard Johnson showboating following a tackle, only a few plays after he gives up a crucial holding penalty which swung the momentum of the game. Hopefully this shock loss will ground a few of these dickheads who think they are better than they actually are. Freeman was under the pump all game and probably did well under the circumstances. I will be interested to learn of the circumstances of the sideline blow ups – very disappointing to see the bucs overall lack of discipline on and off the field.

  29. Adam L. Says:

Where are all the “it’s only preseason” a-holes now? This looked EXACTLY LIKE THE DOLPHINS GAME.

  30. RBellBuc Says:

I think the refs were in the Jet’s pocket. They kept giving them one chance after another. The Jets were committing penalties that were not being called and every time the Bucs had them on their heels the refs would help them out. How disappointing. Especially when I have to watch the game from a crappy internet feed. I expected better. The whole team played down to the level of their competition. The offensive play calls again were suspect. Sully is to stubborn and slow to adapt. I saw 2 quick slants that worked to perfection and then that was it. I’m sad but I’m steady… why? …because I.m a Buc fan. 🙂

  31. Jerry Says:

This game will haunt us. It’s a schedule that is too difficult down the road…

10 wins will not be enough for playoffs in the NFC this year. And this team is not going to get 10 wins….not with this loss.

If we dont win 1 of the next two games…..this season is over as far as playoffs is concerned. 0-3 teams are not playoff teams.

  32. The Way I See It Says:

Ok, I really need to vent. The way this game is changing makes me sad for the sport. Dashon Goldson is flagged for 2 hit’s on a defenseless receiver, what a total bunch of crap! So let me get this straight, you can’t hit receivers or quarterbacks any more because they might get hurt? Memo to NFL, your losing me a life long NFL football fan, I’ve got 1 foot out the door. I will never pay for your product again. CRAP!!!

  33. Oahubuc Says:

No need to drag Raheem into this. Raheem and Olson may actually have put up a better game given the talent we have right now vs. then. This game was lost on the first drive.

As for David, guaranteed he never does that again. He is a fine player, and fell victim to the spirit of the game and the league’s efforts to eradicate it.

  34. Chef Paul Says:

Geno outplayed Josh. Not good on 2 fronts. 1. Josh didn’t play great. No matter what, you out play a second round rookie. 2. Although they looked great at times, at the end of the day, we still have a defense that can stop the run and still make every opposing QB look like an all star. The only thing that has changed is the pass rush is a little better and our running game is worse.

If Josh don’t improve it will only prove he still is not good enough to carry this team. Because that is what will be needed to get any wins.

We get Nicks back, that line, Josh, and Dougie BETTER improve.

As the defense gels they BETTER quit making QBs look like all stars.

Panthers and Falcons loosing is a very fortunate thing to happen for us.
