“Josh Is Our Starter”

September 23rd, 2013

Greg Schiano endorsed and defended Josh Freeman today

Greg Schiano had plenty of short answers today for the Tampa Bay media.

“Details,” was the problem against the Patriots, Schiano said when asked what looked wrong when he studied the Patriots-Bucs game film.

“The whole offensive unit. We need to be more precise,” Schiano said. “They’re schematic issues. … Just in general, offensive details.”

Schiano said make those fixes and we’ll “score a lot of points.”

Asked about making a change at quarterback, Schiano said “Josh is our starter.” Schiano repeated that phrase multiple times.

Schiano also talked about Freeman’s strength in extending plays and defended No. 5. “It’s hard to be the trigger man when some things aren’t going the way they’re supposed to.”

“They’re schematic issues.” means bad scheme.

See, Josh Freeman is not the problem. Everyone other QB in the league has a perfect scheme. Poor Josh does not.

Bucs needs to extend Freeman (before he gets too expensive) and have him call his own plays.

  2. Splengo Says:

Been critical of his coaching lately, but you gotta admire his resolve. I hope he does get things turned around.

    What a Depressing Title.

  4. Tampamac Says:

“Josh is our starter…. Until the bye week.”

  5. Ian P. Says:

You know, when that writer (can’t remember who) said that they would go to Glennon at the bye week if 0-4, I thought, “No way. That would be too early.”, but now after seeing Josh’s play, it’s not only likely, it’s pretty much guaranteed.

  6. Mike J Says:

The Bucs will get the offense hitting on all cylinders long about, oh, March maybe.

  7. Nick2 Says:

I listened to the news conference and I believe when he was first asked about the quarterback position they talked about going forward and he asked them to be more specific and then they said “this Sunday” thats when he said “Josh is our starter.” I pray Schianos plan is to get Glennon in there after the bye. The end of last year and beginning of this year is some of the worst quarterback play I have ever seen period!!!!!!!!

  8. Buc1987 Says:

“They’re schematic issues. … Just in general, offensive details.”

    No sh!t.

  9. Tampamac Says:

And Theodore, after reading some of your previous posts and this one, I KNOW you’re being facetious now…

  10. Free's a Boob Says:

Listening to the radio…it’s all VJax fault this week! Glad that’s cleared up. Better sign Free quick…lol

  11. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Oops…now it’s Sully’s week to be the whipping boy. Last week it was Freeman he not-so-subtly threw under the bus.

Who’s Schiano gonna blame next week when they lose to the Cards? Sheridan? McNulty? Bostad?

    Or…himself?

  12. BirdDoggers Says:

There are definitely schematic issues. As in, the scheme isn’t working. It’s not just about the execution. It’s the one dimensional nature of the offense, with no built in outlets for the QB when the WRs are covered. How about a TE?

  13. Tye Says:

    “Josh Is Our Starter”

and the Bucs could be looking at a 3-13 season, assuming of course the defense is the reason for those 3 wins…. If JF is better than MG then all that means is that the Bucs have 0 QBs!

  14. zam Says:

Let’s get Tebow here, make it entertaining.

  15. Buc1987 Says:

I’ve been blaming Sully since week 1.

  16. Dreambig Says:

At this point Freeman is almost irrelevant. Schiano is captin of the ship and right now his win/loss record is far worse than Josh’s. Regardless of who he puts in at QB, if he doesn’t start figuring out how to win, his coaching days are numbered.

  17. MakaveliTheDon Says:

    POST OF THE DAY!

I was wondering if anyone else caught that. Schiano knows that after Freemans last game next week, theres a really good chance that Glennon will be no better. And Schiano wont criticize HIS draft pick, Freeman wont be around to blame, so Schiano is already shifting his blame to Sully. And he’d be ecstatic to get his Rutgers buddy WR coach McNulty, who I personally think is a downgrade from PJ Fleck, he’ll move his Rutgers buddy (see a theme here?) to OC.

Wake up People. We’re turning to Rutgers South…

    SCHIANO’S GOTTA GO!

  18. Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I just hope the Bucs get whatever is really the problem, fixed.

  19. Buc1987 Says:

If the Bucs are going to bring Teblow in, they would have to change their entire offensive scheme for Teblow. Since the scheme they got now does not work anyways, why not? I really do think it’s a 60-40 mix though. 60% Sully’s scheme and 40% Freemans fault. Either way they better get it fixed soon. A decent TE that fits the “new scheme” (because this one is not working) would also help tremendously and no I’m not talking about Crabtree either. UNC has a VERY good TE right now. The guys a beast.

  20. Nick2 Says:

Anyone who heard Schianos news conference heard him say the main issue was “details. “He used that word “details”. So yes you can blame him but for him to say the issue was in the details puts the blame directly back on him. Schiano is not backing away from taking blame. Lets at least get this straight. Oh and anyone who thinks Schiano is the problem is conveniently forgetting 2011 when not only was our defense worst in the league but Josh Freeman wasn’t doing anything to keep Raheem around either. Its time for Glennon after the bye!!!!!!!

  21. Theodore Says:

@Tampamac – Hard to tell with the likes of Raphael around, eh? 🙂

  22. Buc1987 Says:

Schiano will be here until atleast the end of 2013. Those that think otherwise are fooling themselves.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

The Bucs still have a shot at a legit 8-8, but the offense needs lots of work and fast. I know 8-8 sucks for draft position though.

  24. MakaveliTheDon Says:

I never liked Deumig personally. I dont like how he argues with almost every caller. I dont like how he name drops. How he comes off as a bit of a suck up with big name guests.

BUT, I gotta admit, I agree with his take. It comes down to one guy. The only guy that still cant take full blame of a loss.

Freeman – we blamed everything except for global warming on him. gone (after next week)

Sully – next whipping boy. Glennon will likely suffer, and the MGM wont dare blame their Golden Boy. fans will Freeman Sully out of town. Sully – gone (at the end of the year)

Dominik – our team may end up with a losing record. all of the Dominik bashers from the preseason will re-emerge and unite with the MGM, Dominik – gone (at the end of the year)

Schiano will bump up his Rutgers Buddy McNulty to OC. (McNulty cant even coach up Ogletree. At least PJ Fleck coached up Underwood and got the best football out of VJ and MW. Look at all the drops with WR coach McNulty). Well McNulty becomes OC, and Schiano will talk his way to GM. And be just like his cheating spying azz mentor Belicheat.

I remember 2011 way too well. Thats why I dont want to repeat it. We had a horrible defense, but we had practically the worst pass defense of all time under Schiano in 2012.

Our team straight up quit on Rah. Ive come to terms with next week being Free’s last game as a Buc. But if Schiano’s Golden Boy doesnt improve the offense, the players will quit on Schiano.

I expect the MGM to start blaming Sully, but how do you expect our 9th best offense under Sully last year?? The players arent dumb. The Glazers arent dumb. Schiano is slowly trying to pull a full on takeover of this team, but its gonna backfire unless Glennon really turns out to be the real deal.

  26. MakaveliTheDon Says:

*how do you explain our 9th ranked offense…..

  27. Barry Says:

Joe, I realize his show is a great advertizing platform, but please call him out on his biased mancrush. Probably not but at least we can take the biggest problem and let the dust settle and then see if Schiano and crew are as bad as they look right now. One thing I can’t explain is Schiano not demanding Revis be man on man with each teams best receiver. That absolutely has to change or Revis will blow this whole thing up!!!

  34. Patrick Says:

I could study each of those teams, and garuntee you that each team has a different reason for their poor start.

All I cover is the Bucs. And I’m not about to excuse Keiser Schiano just because other coaches are starting off shtty too. That makes no sense.

Theres a different story behind every teams record.

  37. Nick2 Says:

Just so we are clear in am not one of the MGM group. I would much rather we have any of half of the starting quarterbacks in the NFL rather than Freeman or to have to turn to Mike Glennon but it is what it is.

Ive made peace with the likelihood that Glennon starts after the bye. And I’ll want to see him succeed.

You bringing up Revis’ zone coverage the past 2 weeks. What I cant believe is that Talib is actually outplaying Revis, so far…

But we (Schiano and Dominik too) got rid of him. He was and still is productive. He was never charged on that gun incident. We were desperate for a CB, let alone a CB of Talibs caliber. And I think he was out cause he didnt gel with Schiano, and neither did Blount or KW(who I could give a fck about). I just wonder if a better, more experienced coach with adult athletes, could have found a way to co-exist with Talib while getting the most out of him. Thats what Belicheat does.

  42. josh Says:

    Joe,

As stated, I “cut bait” and don’t plan to fish except for Wednesdays.

  43. Buc1987 Says:

MakaveliTheDon..problem is you seems to think Schiano calls the offensive plays. You also have this conspiracy theory, with nothing to back it up, that Schiano wants to be GM. Actually both things are conspiracy theories. Your “thinking outside of the box” theory only comes down to your own opinions and not facts.

  44. Buc1987 Says:

I say it’s 60% Sully’s scheme and 40% Freeman’s fault. You say it’s Schiano blocking Sully’s scheme that is the problem AND Schiano is after the GM spot. Then you go onto wanting Schiano replaced by Sully. Remember Sully for HC? Well to each his own. To you, Sully the guy that runs the offense is going to solve all the problems as a HC. Like I said to each his own. I just highly doubt your going to find too many people agreeing with you on that, but hey carry on.

When I see a rookie Rutgers TE, 6’5″ fail to stretch out for a catchable TD, when I see our backup Rutgers DT starting, then getting injured(I know thats not his fault), but why is he starting in front of Spence? Then I see a WR corp drop passes left and right, coached by Rutgers coach McNulty. Then I hear our Rutgers head coach talking about our offensive scheme???

Who schemed us going for it on 4th down all day??? who called 4th & 13 on the NE 33, down by 17 with 13 seconds left?? Instead of kicking a 47-49 yd FG to cut the lead to 14??? and stay in the game?

why go for it on 4th & 13 when you know damn well odds of converting that with a short field are lower than kicking a FG! I dont give a sht if you dont trust your kicker. He’s the only one you got! And thats the only logical play to call if you want to keep your team in the game!

And dont say Sully called that…. Nobody but the HC can authorize going for it on 4th down.

So until Schiano proves that he’s a winner, this will be Rutgers South.

  47. MakaveliTheDon Says:

  49. Buc1987 Says:

Of course the HC and every HC coach makes that call, probably not the play call itself though.

  50. MakaveliTheDon Says:

    ’87

I could care less about the design of that 4th & 13 play. I want to know why we were even going for it?? Kick the FG, turn a 3 score lead to a 2 score deficit.

  51. MakaveliTheDon Says:

even if we miss the FG, it shows that at least your coach is trying to stay in the game. and with 13 minutes left, a 14 point deficit could be erased.

  52. MakaveliTheDon Says:

’87 gotta stop making excuses for your guy. a dumb playcall is a dumb playcall.

  53. AceOfAerospace Says:

I’m sorry, I’d rather be 0-16 than 8-8. I take that back, I never want to be 0-16, 1-15 will suffice. I wish I saw anything in our offensive output in the last three weeks to rid all these thoughts. I just didn’t see it. Even if we had of saved the first two games, I saw nothing in offense to give me a warm, fuzzy feeling.

  54. Draft Marty Schottenheimer Says:

My screen name says it all. Schiano saved himself by cutting Sully, bringing in Marty and getting his hands off the offense.

Just want to ask this.could it be possible that Josh s passes are not on target even when they get to the receiver?it seems that a lot of times you watch the receivers, and they are reaching for, or overextending themselves to catch his passes. could this be why they drop a lot? very seldom does he throw to his receivers where they can just keep running and not concentrate on just catching the ball.I also think that if you are a 5th year vet you should be able to call a play by yourself and not blame it on communication problems. call a play, you dont not know the down and distance? come on! you are a quarterback!! I dont think he is ever going to be as good as projected. dont know about Glennon, but what the hell,we already know what Josh will do.wouldnt surprise me if he gets an injury (hangnail) and we see Glennon. .that would be the out for Shiano

  59. Free's A Boob Says:

    Makthe Don

Look it up, Talib was indeed charged in the gun incident and set for trial, postponed, and reset. Prosecution dropped a week or two before the trial.

  60. Buc1987 Says:

For you bashers of this no-nothing college coach like you seem to think at this point in time. Since you want an NFL experienced coach. Who would you take on this list if you trade Schiano tomorrow? All of these teams have about the same talent level that the Bucs have too. Well maybe not the Steelers.

The Skins are 0-3- Coach : Shanahan-many yrs NFL exp. and SB winner
The Steelers are 0-3- Coach : Tomlin – many yrs NFL exp. and SB winner
The Vikings are 0-3 -Coach : Frazier many NFL yrs as an assistant and coordinator.
The Giants are 0-3- Coach : Coughlin- many yrs NFL exp and SB winner.
The Packers are 1-2-Coach :Mccarthy many yrs NFL exp and SB winner.
The 49ers are 1-2- Coach : Harbaugh took team to the SB last season.

  61. BamBamBuc Says:

Good points, 1987. Good coaches are also struggling this year. For each team there is a different reason. Here’s one thing to take away from your point though…

The Bucs at 0-3 are only one game behind the #6 playoff spot at this point. There are only 5 teams in the NFC with winning records. The #6 spot at this point is an 8 team tie at 1-2. While most have lost at least one game to an NFC opponent, we still have many NFC games left (which is a major tie-breaker for the playoffs). We will face the 49ers, Cardinals, Rams, Eagles, Panthers (x2), Falcons (x2) all in that group of losing teams. That’s 8 games against teams under .500 now (11 total including the Bucs). That’s 8 chances to improve our playoff chances. We also have the schizophrenic Lions and the Bills. Toughest matchups will be the Saints and Seahawks and maybe the Dolphins.

Last time (1998) that an 0-3 team made the playoffs, there were actually two that did it the same year. The Bills and Redskins. The Skins had to battle back from 0-3 and 6 teams above .500 out of 15 in week 3. They won the division. The Bills had to overcome 0-3 and 8 teams in the AFC above .500 to get to a wild card, they finished 10-6. What I’m saying is that it’s not over yet and not time to give up or “Tank for Teddy” or anything else yet.

Changing coach, OC, or QB right now may improve the record, or may put the team in disarray. Disarray means we’d probably get whatever QB we wanted next year, but is gonna make it so much more difficult to resign our own players or bring in FAs. There were many years players didn’t want to come here to play because of the state of the team. FAs see when teams tank and when they play all out, even when the chips are down. If we want to have hope next year, or the year after, this team needs to at least give the semblance of giving all out effort every week. We may be losing, but if we start tanking we will never get a decent player to sign with us.

  62. BamBamBuc Says:

My bad… the Skins did not go 10-6, they went 6-10. Had another year in mind, because 0-3 to playoffs has only been done 3 times and thought two did it in 1998.

  63. Fan Since '76 Says:

See what I mean about your actionsxspeaking loudest, 1987?

  76. Buc1987 Says:

Eternally Unrealistic Homer…what is your point? I should still be an Eternally Optimistic Homer and HOPE for 11-5?

  77. Buc1987 Says:

Eternally Optimistic Homer…Make some kind of point instead of just attacking….or you could just go ((Edited for foul language)))yourself.

@Barry…it’s not me going backwards. It’s the Bucs. I’m trying to remain eternally optimistic.

Gawd, I hate responding to you. It makes me feel like I’m slapping a blind guy, or shooting an unarmed man.

But you unwisely calked me out. Sooooo

Damn it! Haven’t you been following this team. 5 years ago- Dom officially amnounced that we were in a rebuilding phase!! It was a rebuild that was gonna be lead by Raheem- the “Players coach”. He boasted that we are building a “lasting contender”

Do you understand now?? Unlike the teams you listed- who have all had winning seasons occasionally- we haven’t. Sucked for 5 years!!!
    Where is the lasting contender!!!

    Do you understand the difference!!!
If not, go ask a friend to explain it to you. Don’t respond to me again!! If I keep gritting my teeth that hard- I’m gonna break one!!

    Makthe Don

Look it up, Talib was indeed charged in the gun incident and set for trial, postponed, and reset. Prosecution dropped a week or two before the trial.

    ________________________________________________________________

well he was never convicted, he’s playing the best football of his career, and his team is 3-0.

  81. Buc1987 Says:

Capt. Tim…ha ha ha yer funny. Last I checked Raheem did not work out now did it. So maybe Dom should have taken back his words about the 5 yr rebuild when he hired Schiano.

  82. MakaveliTheDon Says:

’87 – “1 week the majority of everyone in here are saying Schiano is TOO conservative. Then when he’s not. They fault him for that too.”
    _______________________________________________________________

dude, theres a difference between being aggressive, and being temporarily insane.

4th & 13 on their 33, kick the fcking FG. Period!

  83. Pewter Power Says:

Just end the Freeman era now, enough is enough, we have seen it for the past 5 years. The Bucs are not improving at this position, can Glennon really do any worse then the 42% pass completion of Freeman who is now in his 5th year?

We hear all the time that it is about competition on this team, Freeman has had his time, now lets see what Glennon can do.

We need a fresh start and somebody that this team can rally behind. We used a 3rd round pick on Glennon, lets use that 3rd round and see what it looks like.

ENOUGH OF THE WAITING, PUT IN GLENNON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  84. MakaveliTheDon Says:

and ’87, sorry if I hurt your feelings, but like I saw on the other page, we are the Tampa Bay Rutgerneers!

Until Schiano proves that he can win, I won’t have respect for him. If he can get us to 3-3, I’ll be the first person on JBF to congradulate him.

You see, I distribute blame and praises fairly…across the board. The Freeman saga is done. And I acknowledge that he’s responsible for our poor passing game – I blame him for that.

Our defense got outplayed yesterday by a bunch of rookies and no name receivers – I blame them for that (hell, I think Imthe only one that blamed the defense for yesterday while you guys are stuck on your punching bag QB).

Our team lost two games that we had the lead in with 30 seconds, and 1 second left. I blame LVD for game one. I blame Schiano for calling 3 straight runs to close it because he didnt trust Freeman..not even to roll out and tuck it in if nothing was there. But I blame those losses on Schiano. Penalties… Coming out soft in game 1. A waste of a preseason. All of that is on Schiano. Nothing personal, its just the nature of being an NFL head coach. I also blame our top heavy roster and lack of TE WR OL depth on Dominik.

See?? I can be fair. But still…..

    SCHIANOS GOTTA GO.
    BRING CHUCKY BACK HOME!

  85. MakaveliTheDon Says:

    *1 minute left

  86. MakaveliTheDon Says:

’87 – “MakaveliTheDon..problem is you seems to think Schiano calls the offensive plays. You also have this conspiracy theory, with nothing to back it up, that Schiano wants to be GM. Actually both things are conspiracy theories. Your “thinking outside of the box” theory only comes down to your own opinions and not facts.”
    ____________________________________________________________

Well he obviously calls SOME plays. the 4th down calls yesterday. He admitted in a presser after Game 2 that HE thought running it 3 times was the right call. Now those are facts!

But yeah. Of course Im giving you my opinions most of the time. Im not the motherfckin AP (Associated Press for you simple folk).

But youre right. I do think outside the box a bit. I never take anything at face value. Question Everything! Critical Thinking 101…. Whether Im right or wrong, iwhatever, at least its good brain exercise.

  87. Buc1987 Says:

“He admitted in a presser after Game 2 that HE thought running it 3 times was the right call. Now those are facts!”

Yes and I said right after the game that I thought that was the right call. Kick the FG. The team is up by 4 with about a minute on the clock and the Saints have no timeouts. The FG was no good. So no one gets to find out if it was the right call or not.

  88. MakaveliTheDon Says:

“Yes and I said right after the game that I thought that was the right call. Kick the FG. The team is up by 4 with about a minute on the clock and the Saints have no timeouts. The FG was no good. So no one gets to find out if it was the right call or not.”

Kicking the FG wasnt the right call. because even if you make it, you give Brees one last chance to win the game with a TD.

the right call would have been to get a 1st down, and game over. they could have been a little more creative than 3 runs right up the middle to get that 1st. Schiano’s to blame for calling the runs. Sullys to blame for drawing up the vanilla plays.

  89. Buc1987 Says:

“Kicking the FG wasnt the right call. because even if you make it, you give Brees one last chance to win the game with a TD.”

Well to each his own. I was at the game. The D was shutting Brees down the whole game. Schiano probably thought a 4 point lead and about 1 minute to go. Kick the ball off and make Brees go the length of the field in less than minute with no timeouts against a D that was shutting him down all game long. Instead they missed the kick fromm around the 30 yrd line. So all Brees needed was 3 pts from the 30 instead of 7 from the 20 and that’s what he got 3 with how many seconds left? Like 8 seconds?

  90. Buc1987 Says:

^^^It’s very easy to second guess it now. Because it didn’t work out.^^^ If the FG kick was good. You can’t just sit here and make a prediction that Brees would have drove the length of the field for a TD with less than a minute and no timeouts after the way the Bucs D handled him all game long. Well you could just sit here and do it I guess. You could just speculate on something we never got to see happen.

  91. MakaveliTheDon Says:

with a 1st down, its game over. Brees and the Saints have zero chance cause we run out the clock.

with a FG, the odds may be low, but they still have a chance.

  92. MakaveliTheDon Says:

I saw something on Michael Bennett, how he’s already got 2.5 sacks in 3 games and 7 tackles. And his Seahawks are 3-0. Well I did some fckin around on Google, and came up with this GEM of an article from non other than……JoeBucsFan:
    _____________________________________________________________

Bennett explained why he’s skeptical of New Schiano Order tactics and said he doesn’t believe it’s an ideal method for grown men

“The coaches are very different. You know, Coach Schiano is more hard-nosed, military-type guy. And Coach Carroll is so laid back, it gives the guys chances to not be on their back but still coach them at the same time,” Bennett said. “Because I think a lot of players, they’re adults, too, and when you treat them like kids they get offended by that. You know what I mean? Because players, you know, they got their mortgages, they got their kids, they got wives, they got family, they got things they can do.

“So they know it’s their job and they know when they make mistakes. But it’s a coach’s job to keep them honest, you know what I mean. But when a coach is just too much on them, I think the players rebel. Because, you know, they’re going to be like, ’Why is he on me like this? It’s my fifth year in the league. I know more than him.’ Guys are just like, you know, it just becomes a big conflict, I think.”

None of this surprises Joe. However, Joe is troubled hearing it come from Bennett, who is a very level-headed guy. Bennett also appeared to be the textbook Buccaneer Man under Schiano. He was hard-working, versatile and he played through an injury and took on a tremendous number of snaps.

Current Buccaneers surely share Bennett’s attitude. But Joe has no problem with that. You don’t have to love your boss. Numerous hard-nosed NFL coaches have achieved greatness, including Tom Coughlin winning two Super Bowls recently. Schiano’s tactics can work. Joe’s more skeptical of Schiano’s ability as a game-day coach. (You can hear the Bennett audio below.)

    @Coach Schiano,

If youve somehow stumbled across this page, really take a good look at that post, and what Bennett is saying.

And just assume that every single player thinks this same way. I’m sure that there are some that don’t. But just assume that they ALL do. Then maybe you can re-evaluate your own tactics, do your best to adjust and save this season. There’s still 13 games left.
