“I Think We Had To Wait And See”

September 25th, 2013

Joe asked Greg Schiano today whether he “misevaluated” the quarterback situation back in March or February?”

“No. I think we had to wait and see and play it out,” Schiano said. “To say misevaluated it, you have to let it play out. If I was certain, if Mark was certain, there would have been a contract extension.

“So certainly we did that. We said it publicly, that we’ll see how it plays out.”

Joe’s not sure why, today, the head coach doesn’t think he made a mistake going with Freeman to start the season. Ultimately, Freeman was judged as the best QB, yet today he’s considered an outcast by the regime. It’s clear to Joe that Glennon didn’t win the job in the eyes of Schiano. Freeman lost it. Joe… c’mon. Really? Freeman was in the last year of his contract, we had nobody better except a rookie. Why in that situation would you not let Freeman start the season?… Just a few days ago you were telling us there was no way Freeman didn’t finish the season as starter.. now your trying to force Schiano to say he made a mistake in starting Freeman?

I dont think it was a mistake either. Even the Mike Glennon Mob you refer to so much realized Freeman had to at the least start the season.

  2. Eric Says:

Well our GM and coach both said we can win right away with Glennon.

Let’s wait and see how that goes.

  3. Buc1987 Says:

Couch Fan..yep I agree with everything you just said. No need for comment by me.

  4. Illuminati Says:

I watched Schiano’s presser on NFL Network earlier. Looking at his expression and his demeanor, you kind of got the impression that he feels a huge albatross has been removed from around his neck.

Benching Freeman for Glennon wasn’t just a coach’s decision. Ownership and management had a lot invested in Freeman, and Schiano knew all along it would take a perfect storm of circumstances to get the organization to finally move past Freeman.

Schiano seems more upbeat, and Glennon is embracing the moment. There’s a new energy now. And, really, Glennon doesn’t have to come out and play lights out for us to win. He just has to play like an average NFL QB, not that that’s a small order for a rookie.

  5. Buc1987 Says:

Wrong presser Joe. It’s the Glennon presser not the coach, you might want to fix it.

  6. lightningbuc Says:

    Joe’s jumped the shark!

  7. PewterPirate Says:

Freeman had to start the season, it was a make or break year for him. It just happened to be that he broke so now it’s Glennon’s turn. According to Booger and Rich, this was approved by team Glazer and that Dom didn’t have a leg to stand on when it came to supporting Freeman as the starter. I don’t want to hear any comments about Freeman giving us the best chance to win, he has led us to an 0-3 record with under 50% passing. Any rookie can accomplish at least that. I am now excited for this Sunday just to see if Glennon gives us a spark.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

By Gregg Rosenthal Around The League Editor Published: June 21, 2013 at 08:48 a.m.

I’m excited about getting this year going,” Freeman told WDAE-FM. “It has nothing to do with … a contract year, finding out, oh, is he signed for this? What happened? I know God has got a plan for me, it’s all going to work out in the end.

“If I just give it the best I’ve got regardless … if I give it the best I’ve got and the Buccaneers say, ‘Ah, we don’t think he can play for us,’ at the end of the year and every other team in the NFL does and I end up wherever I end up doing whatever, I’ll be content because I’ll know I gave it the best I had.”

“Come hell or high water, trust me, dude, we’re going to win some games this year. The Bucs are going to be a force. I’m pumped up about that,” Freeman said.

  9. lightningbuc Says:

This move came from the Glazers. It makes me laugh thinking that the Glazers were in their suite on Sundays thinking the same thing I’ve been saying – WTF?

  10. Otto Says:

Perhaps Dominik was the one behind the “mistake” of starting the season with Freeman, with all this evaluation talk. Rockstar’s first moves were to unceremoniously can Brooks, extend Clayton, hire Morris, Jeff Jags, and Jim Bates, and draft Freeman. Ouch! But, I’m all in with this move and love the way the defense is playing. I hope it’s the spark we need to score more than 3 points and win. I’ll be there to witness it in person. Go Bucs!!

  11. MakaveliTheDon Says:

If Freeman is really dating that “white girl”, then I wonder when it started… Maybe when he lost all his weight. And why did he start? Maybe cause his coach didnt like his laid back style and thought he should be more fired up. But still, he shouldnt mess with that sht.

So maybe Ive been a little too hard on Schiano. But you know what?? Fck Schiano!

He claimed in his presser how Freeman is 1-9 in his last 10 games. (he must be reading my posts when I brought up a few days ago how HE’S 1-9 in his last 10 games as the HC)! He can blame Freeman for the offensive numbers. BUT SCHIANO TAKES THE BLAME FOR THE TEAMS NUMBERS — WINS AND LOSSES!

  13. Buc1987 Says:

Otto …if Glennon has a fairly decent day on Sunday and the Bucs win. I’m going to start a Glennon chant as I walk out of RJS. I hope everyone else is with me.

  14. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

BUT SCHIANO TAKES THE BLAME FOR THE TEAMS NUMBERS — WINS AND LOSSES!

Well, of course. That’s his responsibility And, he feels the difference between wins and losses was Freeman. He took the bull by the horns and made a change. That’s his job as head coach. And we will find out whether or not Freeman was the problem very soon.

  15. buc4lyfe Says:

ok well turns out they’ve been wrong more often than not….the HUGE Contract given to ERIC WRIGHT, trying to convince us MICHAEL BENNETT was hurt, letting ROY MILLER GO without decent depth, not resigning DALLAS CLARK, if he even wanted to come back…keeping myron lewis on the roster so long for god knows what, playing man press with undrafted rookies, playing zone with the best cover corner in the game.

good luck glennon because regardless of what schiano or anyone says, i’m willing to bet these owners wont let this head coach hide behind the rookies inexperience…..schiano is a liar and not a very good coach and not a family man or a buccaneer man so how would he know….0-3 what a bucs life

  17. MakaveliTheDon Says:

This article is funny too. CAUSE I BROUGHT UP THIS ISSUE UP IN THE LAST FEW DAYS TOO! Except I put the blame on both Dom and Schiano if they mis-evaluated Josh in the offseason. But maybe he started on that candy AFTER their evaluation.

  18. MakaveliTheDon Says:

@lightning, youre right. it was. but it was brought up without any sources except for local guys saying theyve seen him in clubs etc.

so I took it with a grain of salt. but when the BD opened his show with that, and the sources you know he’s got, that hold more weight than some random dude that saw him at a party.

but youre right. I overlooked that cause I was partial. see? I can “man up”!

on a personal level, I hope its not true. but if youve listed to BD the past few weeks, his tone straight up changed today towards Free. and his sudden implication, just seems like someone, maybe from the organization, maybe from the Schiano camp, told him to put out there. but who knows?? again, I hope its not true. just for his sake alone. that stuff turns your life dark. The guy has a 45% completion percentage and poses with baby tigers, of course we misevaluated him! Now I’m attempting this last act of desperation so I’m not the next guy out of here. By the way, it’s all Mark Dominik’s fault.”

  27. chef paul Says:

After these first 3 games in super stoked about Glennon. After schiano got here Doms drafts have improved. Who’s to sany Glennon wasn’t a great pick too. I do t think coach and doms jobs are NOT in jeopardy either. I believe they really do make a great team.

@Freeman, good luck. I wish you well!

  30. Bobby Says:

I agree that insinuating Freeman is using drugs without concrete proof is slanderous. Believe me, if there were any inkling of that within the organization they would have had him tested and Glennon would have gotten the nod before this if the test was positive.

  31. MakaveliTheDon Says:

Phase 1 of The New Schiano Takeover is complete.

  32. Bobby Says:

Personally, I look for Freeman to be traded before the Philly game. He’s going to be a distraction for Glennon on the sideline. They do not want Mike to feel like he’s one step away from being benched.

  33. Adam L. Says:

This is it for Schiano. I’ve been reading that Schiano recruited Glennon for Rutgers, but he chose NCST.

This is an all-in move. If this hits and the team sparks around Glennon, Schiano is a genius, if not, he’s just another college flame-out.

  34. MakaveliTheDon Says:

^^^^ oh, of course. Schiano’s had a hard on for Glennon since high school. He’s sticking to his plan. If Freeman has a good game against the sh!tty AZ defense, then he might not get another chance to put his guy in.

  35. MakaveliTheDon Says:

He couldnt make the decision on Monday to start Glennon?? Why??

He started watching film of AZ and thought, “if Freeman beats these guys, we go into the bye after a positive win, and the team can gain confidence and go on a hot streak. then Freeman will be here for at least the rest of the season. and I’ll never get to play (with my toy) Glennon!”

  36. MakaveliTheDon Says:

  37. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Anyone know how this week’s ticket sales are looking?

  38. SeanyMac in SC Says:

The Bucs gave JF5 plenty of opportunities to prove himself, and he failed to do so. With hindsight, it is now quite telling that the Bucs gave Mike Williams a contract extension and not Josh. Looks like a brilliant move now. Lets be thankful that the Bucs did not pull a Jets-Sanchez contract disaster.

  39. chef paul Says:

I remember I got accused of smoking crack from my coworkers one time without concrete proof. I was so pissed because it wasn’t true. I was actually smoking meth. BTW I’ve been clean for over 10 years now and that was a 100% true story

  40. Bobby Says:

You guys saying it’s Schiano wanting to get his guy in are reading this all wrong. This isn’t a “Schiano’s guy” move. This is a move that says “We have to see immediately what we have in this guy so we can plan the draft around it” It’s an orchestrated move by both Schiano and Dom. Once you come to the conclusion that Freeman ‘isn’t’ your guy then you have to start to answer the question “Who IS our guy??” You don’t really know what you have in Glennon until you play him. If he pans out…great! You can beef up the O-line in round one or get a good pass rusher or a WR…whatever. The main question you have to answer is “Do we need a QB because, if we do, there are a lot of good ones in this 2014 draft.” This is a smart business move and nothing more.

Glennon will not be a steep drop off from Freeman unless he makes a lot of rookie mistakes and I don’t think he’ll do that. If anything, he may miss some open receivers because he is too afraid of throwing a pick. I hope not. I’d rather see him come out and be aggressive. Don’t be stupid, but go for it if you think you see it. Trust your arm. A confident Mike Glennon could win us some games this year if our defense continues to perform.

  41. Couch Fan Says:

    @Bobby

We dont seem to agree often but I agree with that. People are looking for reasons to blame stuff on Schiano when in all actuality it’s just a simple, “We gave Josh a chance and he blew it, now its time to move on.”

  42. Eric Says:

It’s not even good coach speak.

  43. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Previously a Freeman supporter, I grew tired of the inconsistency.

After 0-3 and 3 poor performances, it was time for a change.

Likely what you will get will be similar to what you get from Josh (47% completions, less than 200 yards passing, More Ints than Tds).

The difference is the kid has zero experience, and Freeman is a 4+ year starter previously with huge contract expectations.

This was a tough call, but at 0-3 it is the correct one.

We all have heard rumors about Josh, missing his own camp, missing team photos, rambling radio interviews; however, none of us have proof. This afternoon on ESPN Chris Mortensen almost divulged what he meant by “off-field issues” when pressed.

  44. chef paul Says:

    _____________________________________________________________

If thats the case, then youre saying that theyve already given up on the season if theyre thinking about the 2014 draft with still 13 games to play.

on top of that, if they plan on REBUILDING with a rookie QB from the draft, we lose our players, the Glazers lose me as a fan until we get new management. Or I can move back to Denver and root for Peyton Manning.

Even if Josh is gone at the end of the year, they must want to WIN NOW. And they’ll have plenty of $$$$ from what would have been Freemans contract to get a Top 10 QB. Big time QB moves happen every offseason. With our talent & money, itd be easy to pick up a proven vet, and WIN NOW.

  48. Andrew 1 Says:

I don’t see why it’s so hard to understand. The organization thought he would be playing better than than what he already has. He hasn’t so they made a qb change. It’s that simple

  49. MakaveliTheDon Says:

BTW Bobby, I understand that its time for a change, its just the timing of it that has me questioning it. When everybody agreed the best time to put Glennon in if we’d go that route would be during the bye.

I honestly think Schiano was worried that Freeman might have won it, which could mean:

    a) he’ll have to continue to start and will be up and down for the rest of the season; so he’ll have to wait until 2014 to give Glennon a shot

    b) Freeman would win, the team would be pumped and go on a run, there’d be a 10% (8.9%) chance of making the playoffs, freeman might be franchise tagged; Glennon will have to wait

    c) Schiano’s worst case scenario, Freeman turns it way the fck around with his starting TE back, WRs stepping up, and gets his 4-5 year extention

    just a take.

  50. Biff Barker Says:

Joe, I thought the radio show was a travesty of doublespeak tonight. You correctly and consistently stated all along that Schiano knew Freeman playing the entire season was his best chance to win.
Yet after the subpar performance by Freeman through three games that you have dutifly reported, you said you really hope Schiano knows what he’s doing benching Freeman, intimating the coach is the major source of this teams problems.
But any dullard surely realizes it was not his sole decision, Dom’s in and the Glazers have the last word.
Duemeg has vowed to run Schiano out of town, yet started his show saying given Freemans “off field” issues, the benching was the correct decision. He even credited Schiano for taking control of the presser simply for citing performance issues.
Love or hate the decision, there is an elephant in the room. The Bucs front office and coaching staff had to make a move.

Joe stands behind everything he said and reported. Not sure what doesn’t make sense to you. Joe firmly believes the move — today — was Schiano’s call. –Joe

I never mentioned your name in the first place. You seemed to automatically think for some reason I was talking about you. Do you really think you matter that much to me or other people in here? Apparently so. Newsflash : You don’t matter that much.

    ’87,

“You have no idea how many fitted and snapback tinfoil bucs caps I have…. Anyways, I just cant take anything from anyone at face value. I question everything. I was raised that way. I know it gets a bit much sometimes, but I’ve never drunk anyones kool-aid…….ever.”

    Who started with who first?

  71. MakaveliTheDon Says:

    uhhhhh, you.

Remember that lie that you passed around this site when you thought I wasnt watching???

“tony2cents has bought into the media so much that he’s concocted a conspiracy theory that Schiano purposely tampered with Freeman’s helmet communicator. To make Freeman look bad.”

  72. MakaveliTheDon Says:

    *crickets…..

    thats what I thought..

    “September 13th”

MakaveliTheDon…Your bringing up September 13th as me starting with you first? When I’m talking about today.

Is there one day on JBF that you can go without getting into a fight with someone on here? And you say I have problems? Your a downright mental case.

  74. Free's A Boob Says:

It’s pretty clear, that the “off field issues” whatever they may be came to game day. Joe I am sure you know far better than we do the real “off field issues” yet you take any chance to shoot at Schiano. Maybe he really does like Free and thought he could clean up his act.

It seems to me that the entire organization is handling the issue with class and discretion, but you want to blame Schiano. Way to bash a guy when he’s trying to do the right thing.

    1) Take Out Freeman – check
    2) Take out Sully, Promote McNulty –
    3) Undermine and Take Out Dominik –
    4) Assume the Role of HC & GM like Belicheat –

    —————————————–

This is a post you keep repeating on every article today…. You have come up with a conspiracy theory for every aspect of the team. Now I can’t find it but I swear I remember you saying that about the communicator as well. But even if you didn’t, judging just by what you’ve posted today, its not hard to imaging you saying something as stupid as that. Lol

    But hey do you MrConspiracyTheorist

“chef paul…lots of conspiracy theories around JBF. I won’t even bother addressing them anymore. I call it silly banter myself.”

and then the attack begins…attack mode. Like some sort of lunatic.

  77. Buc1987 Says:

“Now I can’t find it but I swear I remember you saying that about the communicator as well.”

Couch Fan…the point was that someone said it in here. I may have gotten the name wrong LIKE I HAVE already told Tony. That because I said his name is not the point of what I was talking about in the first place at the time on Sept 13th.

But of course he had to jump all over me like some nut case calling out my wife a “c”word and me a effing liar. A spaz is a spaz. Then says he’s leaving JBF for good. Then the next day comes back in here as TrueBuc and 2 days after that he brings my mother into the conversation. A spaz is a spaz. He attacked rdbucfan the other night too and started talking about rdbucfan’s dead father as well. He wants to fight with people on here daily. Maybe it makes him feel like a bad ass. I don’t know? It makes him look like a spaz to me.

  78. Couch Fan Says:

I know BucFan, my point was this guy has made up so many conspiracy theories that he has convinced himself is true, which I’ve already posted as proof, that its not so far fetched to think he is the one who said that… he firmly denies it but… c’mon… look at what he’s just been saying today along. Lol

  79. Couch Fan Says:

look at what he’s just been saying today alone.*

  81. Free's A Boob Says:

Look at your pre-season posts Joe “laser passes” “Brees-like accuracy” but then Schiano is the one with the inconsistencies?

I’m probably older than most on here but this entire thing reminds me of Whitey Herzog and Keith Hernandez. Whitey send Hernandez packing to the Mets for a song at the height of Hernandez career. He endured all sorts of acrimony in St. Louis but took the high road and kept his tongue. In a few years Hernandez’ off the field issues proved Whitey correct.

Seems to me that Schiano’s flaw, if you wish to call it that was either character evaluation or over loyalty.

  82. Buc1987 Says:

Couch Fan…like I said before I couldn’t remember the exact terminology or I would have found out exactly who said it. I tried everything I could on google.I even scrolled through thread after thread. Then I gave up. I just said to myself why am I bothering with such a spaz for in the first place? Because me using his name as a reference was not the point in the first place. I was just talking about fans coming up with conspiracy theories, and I might of got the name wrong. Still I don’t think I did get the name wrong, but oh well. Like I said who cares?

are you slow ’87??? really? are you? because thats ok..

you first ask, “who started with who 1st?”

I show you your 1st attack/outright LIE from Sept 13…..

then you say, “youre bringing up sept 13, Im talking about today”

MY GOD YOURE DUMB! you and crotch fan can keep jerkin each other off. you need each other, cause neither of you inbred trailer trash hicks can take me down.

    Peace btches!!

    Spaz?

“cause neither of you inbred trailer trash hicks can take me down.”

Couch Fan…see what I mean about being a spaz? Borderline lunatic…the internet is full of them. This dude clearly has mental problems. Better to just ignore the lunatic from now. The dude talked to me on here 2 nights ago like we were buddy buddy and let bygones be bygones and then he goes all spastic on me tonight. Brings up something I said about him 2 weeks ago. One minute he’s your friend, the next minute he attacks you. It’s like it’s his daily goal. It could be me today and someone else tomorrow. It’s his daily goal in life. The song Loser by Beck comes to mind.

Got a couple of couches sleep on the love seat
Someone keeps sayin I’m insane to complain
About a shotgun wedding and a stain on my shirt
Don’t believe everything that you breathe
You get a parking violation and a maggot on your sleeve
So shave your face with some mace in the dark
Savin’ all your food stamps and burnin’ down the trailer park

    Yo, cut it.

    Soy un perdedor
I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?
    (Double-barrel buckshot)
    Soy un perdidor
I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?

Nobody needs to take him down, he already IS down.

  87. MakaveliTheDon Says:

thanks though. now I can have a nice chuckle before bed. good night little man.
