Johnthan Banks Battling Rookie Life

August 30th, 2013

The cornerback likely to be tested over and over and over again when Darrelle Revis returns to the lineup on opening day, Johnthan Banks, has done great things this preseason but also has shown the world he’s a rookie.

Last night delivered another one of those rookie moments. Shortly after the opening whistle, Redskins wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe caught a ball in front of Banks about a yard from the sidelines and then Briscoe proceeded to juke Banks to the outside and break the tackle. (Here’s the video.)

Unacceptable, but part of the development process.

And that’s really the key. Can Banks learn from his lessons? Aqib Talib has spent an entire career with plenty of talent but consistently allowing big plays. Banks doesn’t seem to have the raw talent of Talib, so he’s got to tighten up the fundamentals. Drew Brees will be in Tampa in 16 days.

Without a pass rush, he will get exposed by Brees. He will have to get a lot of safety help.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

What I also saw in the video is Sean Baker also missing a tackle….big-time. In a real game Banks would have Goldson or Barron helping and that would probably not happen.
We have plenty of veterans that miss tackles on occaision.
I think Banks will be fine.

  3. Ricardo Esteban Says:

he’s had good moments……but he has been getting WORKED in preseason a good amount.

They are going to light him up when the season starts. I just hope he gets a few picks with the amount of balls coming his way and they give him mucho help.

they won’t need to throw to Revis from what I’ve seen.

    Our pass rush is non-existant.

    What gives?

We need to suit up Sapp…where is Simeon Rice?

Great takes, Joe!! No BS, yet no hysteria. Well done, sir.
Radio should factor into your future plans, imo. Cheers!

Banks will be fine. He’s a rookie and has already shown great poise and impressive CB skills. The mistakes will fade and the consistency will increase as the season goes along.

As for the game last night here are some thoughts:

    – Page is a keeper
    – Goode is a keeper
    – Gholston is a keeper
    – Glennon won’t be a viable starting option for 2 years
    – Spence is a fourth round gem
    – Casillas is a better LB than Watson
    – Lindell seems more reliable than Dimke
    – Our WR depth isn’t nearly as impressive as it was hyped to be
    – Grimm is a goner

  8. Couch Fan Says:

Gotta say Baker looked even worse on that play than Banks.

  9. Splengo Says:

    Agree with FlyboyinDallas.

    @ Couch

Right on…..thats why its a team game….Banks will have far better backup than Baker….there is a reason why we drafted Baron #1 & picked up Goldson.
Pre season is a very deceptive thing….

  11. Splengo Says:

Interesting stat: In just 48 hours 704 NFL players will be cut. 204 of them will get another chance on a practice squad. 448 of them will possibly become UPS drivers. 2 or 3 of them may become Bucs.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ SplengoB

Good stats….don’t think UPS has many jobs open though.]

It would be unreasonable if the Bucs don’t pick up a couple of players….so 2 or three on the 53 are not safe.

    K, TE, WR…OG, DL,C

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Didn’t mean C……meant CB…..can’t have enough WR or CBs…

The problem is draft ego…”an unwillingness to give up on draftees in hopes that they will eventually perform”
Myron Lewis is a very good example of that. I fear we may keep players like Tandy & Means for that reason when their very well may be much better players available.

  14. Couch Fan Says:

Can’t believe you want to cut Means already. I personally thought he wasnt half bad and could potentially be good depth. It’s not like we have much better already on the roster

  15. Stranger Says:

    @Tampabaybucsfan

Woah now, let’s not be crazy. I like Means and the versatility he has shown. He was even the favorite over Gholston before last night due to playing some downs with the first team D. Would prefer if we kept him and Gholston around. Especially if Bowers is going to continue having questions about him.

  16. Splengo Says:

All players have to be cut to make it to the PS. Schiano is not going to cut a 4th round pick of Gholston’s size and potential and expose him to waivers. If Means is cut nobody is going to add him to a 53 roster this early. He will clear waivers and be added to the PS. No loss.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Couch & Stranger

I’m not advocating we cut means….I simply put his name out there as an expample of someone that may be kept when there are other proven players that are available.
Just because we draft someone we don’t have to keep them is my point.
I hope Means makes it and proves our 5th round pick was worth it.
    I note that you didn’t come to Tandy’s defense….

  18. Buc1987 Says:

I’m going to add that there were reliable options @ CB and DE in free agnecy this season. We chose to pass on them.

  19. d-money Says:

I’d hardly call that a juke.

  20. Stranger Says:

Well yea, Tandy is awful. He was about as good as Baker, and no one expects Baker to make the team. But I want to keep our ends. If we aren’t guaranteed anything out of our pass rush this year outside of Clayborne, then at least let us hope that one of our potentials shine through.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Stranger

What if a DE pops up on waivers that is tested/experienced etc.
Would you risk putting Gholson or Means or even Scott Trevor…hoping they clear waivers and then put them on the practice squad??

  22. Stranger Says:

Simply put, that would be risky.

  23. MadMax Says:

I’ll admit, Im still learning about the practice squad qualifications, but wouldnt Scott not be qualified? Means and Gholston yes.

  24. GRIF4FREESUX Says:

    @1987,pleeeez,pleeez,stop being so negative^^^^^^tear drop.

  25. MadMax Says:

The biggest lesson Banks, PLAY THOSE MARKERS ON 3RDS.
You’re still learning but so far Im liking what Im seeing 🙂
