BSPN: Carl Nicks Could Miss A Month

August 19th, 2013

Blistergate has now sounded an alarm heard across the nation.

Carl Nicks’ newly infected foot blister, not his surgically repaired foot/toe, could keep the All-Pro guard out a month, reports BSPN NFL guru Adam Schefter, via RotoWorld.com.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on NFL Insiders Monday that Bucs LG Carl Nicks (toe infection) “could miss about a month, based on what I’m being told.”
Nicks is dealing with an “infected blister” on the same toe that he injured midyear last season, costing Nicks the final nine games. The Bucs need to take their time in order to avoid future setbacks, so Nicks is looking highly doubtful for Week 1. If he misses a month from now, Nicks could still be back early in the season. Look for Ted Larsen to stand in at left guard.
.
Joe’s not sure Schefter is accurate, but certainly he has his share of excellent sources. If Nicks returned in a month, he would miss two games.
.
Nicks is one of four players the Bucs were counting on recovering from major surgery and being 100 percent for Week 1, including Adrian Clayborn, Davin Joseph and Darrelle Revis. That was a lofty and unrealistic goal, but if the Bucs can withstand losing one of these guys, it would be Nicks or Joseph.

Good thing Mark Dominik has built such a deep roster. Lol. I wrote that with a straight face.

  2. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

“Turnstile Ted” Larsen. LMAO! So much for Freeman’s GREAT September. Looks like we may see Glennon sooner rather than later after Freeman goes down ala last Friday night when Larsen was in.

  3. lightningbuc Says:

This will turn out as a worse free agent signing than Eric Wright. ROCK STAR!

  4. Andrew 1 Says:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! so distracted by that head trauma thing that I clearly missed this piece of wonderful news. S@#$!!! DAMMIT, and any other cuss word you want to throw in there.

  5. Buc'n Junkie Says:

another negative comment. ^^^ and counting

  6. Buc'n Junkie Says:

I would much rather have Jeremy Zuttah slide over to left guard and Larsen at center.

  7. Buc'n Junkie Says:

    that was for lightning Andrew

  8. bucfanjeff Says:

I mentioned before he could start on the PUP\temp IR…just may end up that way.

  9. Andrew 1 Says:

time to see if Gabe Carimi can play LG I guess.

  10. Macabee Says:

I follow Adam Schefter on Twitter and I consider him a reliable source. But on this one, somebody is lying. Schefter said that the blister is on the same toe that Nicks is having a problem with.

I listened to Schiano’s presser today and that very question was asked. Without a stutter Schiano said that it was not on the injured toe and that it was on the outside of the foot – same foot but not the toe.

On this one I’m going to take Schiano’s word. He does not strike me as a man that would stand before a group of journalist and tell an outright lie!

  11. BucoBruce Says:

Fu##,Why,Why,why,I cant believe this shi$.I will still keep the faith, but damn it man!BUCS 11-5 going to playoffs!

  12. Mitch Says:

Damn it, ok, enough. you people are so damn annoying. You all must have short memories because Doug Martin ran and received for 1900+ yards & 10+ TD’s and free threw for 4000+ yards and 27Tds with a line that bobstad held together with bubble gum and duct tape. You people aren’t real fans. Fan’s don’t trash a man (Dominik) for trying to improve his team by, at the time signing the 33rd? ( At the time) BEST NFL player in the league. Not saying he’s a perfect man, because NO ONE in this league is. But about fed up with all these losers who don’t pay any attention at all and just like to pile on when shit gets tough. Unless youre an all-pro yourself, you cant change the direction of this team. Grow some balls and back your team instead of following the troll train. Bleed red & pewter Til I die.. & Joe, you rock!

  13. SacBucs Says:

Like I said tthe bucs paid a big contract for a 80% player for the rest of his career. I question if New Orleans knew he had a toe injured prior to FA. Is that why he didnt get the long term contract with the Saint? He was suppose to be one of the best guards in the game right. He played 4 to 5 games healthy or did he. He played wit pain a few games so Im screaming….RESTRUCTURE!!!

Now in a year when we could have stregthened our whole team from front to back thru just FA not even the draft this is what were left with.

One injury from looking foward to next season. No depth on the d-line in a pass rush heavy draft. Plus a pass rush Free agency frenzy of veteran on the market. Somebody doing something wrong!

We missed out on corners last year and got torched! Our chance to get some decent 2nd 3rd cb’s came this year but the smoke and mirror trick with revis made us miss out

I just wanna win..The whole thing not just go to the frickin playoffs!

  14. Curmudgeon Says:

Here’s an idea. Let’s not count on Carl Nicks ever being in the lineup again… Then, if he is, it’s all gravy. Clearly, that’s cap money that is not getting ROI… Release or take a pay cut after this year.

  15. lightningbuc Says:

Buc Junky is the JBF posting police!

  16. Macabee Says:

For those who really want to know what Carl’s condition is go to Buccaneers.com, click on Schiano’s after practice press conference and start tape at 2:13.

@Macabee – To be fair, that was as of noon. Things can change fast. Also, in the future, Joe would appreciate you not directing folks to leave Joe’s site, unless it’s truly important. Thanks. –Joe

  17. Chase Says:

Joe, fairly new reader, generall love the site, but I gotta say that continuing the BSPN stuff takes away from your credibility. This is Schefter, so the information is good far more often than not, and whatever personal qualms you have against the network seem to be getting in the way. Your title here implies that JoeBucsFan.com does not agree or support with one of the most respected NFL newsbreakers. To me, a fan looking for Bucs news, it leaves a bad taste to see you blast ESPN like this in what seems to be a recurring trend. Don’t get me wrong- ESPN has its faults, and it should really take Bayless and some of those other clowns off the air. But when it comes to breaking news like this, ESPN and especially Schefter are the top of the totem pole.

Maybe this is just me, but thought I’d share the opinion.

  18. SacBucs Says:

If Nicks dont play we are Doomed. Ted cant block anybody Larsen cant play guard or center. Zuttah cant get a full season at center Dam!

Cody wallace & Jace Daniels did a better job then I ever seen Larsen do. Period! Remmers is a better guard then tackle. Meredith and Carimi looked better then the first unit tackles on the speed rusher even if it was the second string. Niko got Carimi bc he hadnt ajusted to game speed yet he settled in nice after that. I cant say enough about Meredith.

Bottomline: we back to our same ol offensive line!

  19. Snook Says:

    Here comes IR.

  20. Macabee Says:

    Joe,

Macabee will never again direct someone to another site. But I know Joe has high integrity and would always seek the truth. If in fact you believe that the blister has left the side of Nicks foot and moved to the infected toe, Macabee has nothing further to say!

  21. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

And ……. Tampa gave Nicks 31 Million Dollars, Guaranteed.
    OUCH !

  22. lightningbuc Says:

    Joe,

“@Macabee – To be fair, that was as of noon. Things can change fast.”

Seriously? I thought the same as Mac. So you’re saying the blister may have moved since noon? C’mon!

  23. Meat Says:

Fans are allowed to be critical of the team they pay to see. “You are our stockholders” came from the mouth of ownership. Mark Dominik has the longest tenure of any current GM without a playoff appearance under his belt. Several signings he has made have been downright horrendous- questioning his capabilities as a quality GM or Nicks’ work ethic doesn’t mean I am a less-loyal fan… honestly I think its the contrary. Our D-line’s depth is a joke, and some of our “starters” would not make a 53 man roster of better perennial winners’ teams. Passing on one of the 5 elite rushers available during free agency was a gamble that seems like a loser at this point. Bowers has not come close to what he was at Clemson, and rockstar concluded that he was a better option (fiscally or skill or both) than what the market had to offer.

It pisses me off beyond belief that Nicks’ didn’t come into camp ready to go. He’s had almost the same recovery time that AP had coming back from a torn ACL! Blisters on your feet come from lack of conditioning. I can tell you from my days as a college athlete, I got severe foot blisters only when my feet weren’t accustomed to long periods in cleats…. if I was training regularly and in good condition, I didn’t get near as many blisters. Nicks got paid and got complacent. Even during his 7 game span last year we didn’t see the 50 million dollar man we signed from the Saints.

  24. SacBucs Says:

Before the smart alecs come out!

I know blount got a thousand yards behind that line in a predictable greg olsen offense. Im just worried about any line up with Larsen in it.. Maybe with his bro at fullback he might play with a pair!

  25. Andrew 1 Says:

this news sucks and all, but I dont think weve seen that last of Nicks. He’ll be back.

  26. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

At most he’ll miss two weeks of the season. Chill people.

  27. Buc'n Junkie Says:

You can’t believe that anything the media says is credible anymore. It’s always all about exaggeration and that shock value their looking for. Instead of doing his homework and reporting the facts, he’s wants to create the news and turn it into a circus. And I do believe they make these reports predicated mostly on the negative comments that subscribers make.

They are more apt to listen to someone like Buc Realist or Freemans a boob before they listened to someone like Macabee, WCBF, or Bonsai.

The radio shows love it when some redneck, pitchfork swinging, brainwashed numbskull calls in more than they do someone who makes any sense.

  28. Adam L. Says:

    A blister? Seriously?

Where did the Bucs’ medical staff get their credentials? A matchbook?

  29. Andrew 1 Says:

^^^^ you missed the key word there- infected. infections are nothing to mess with.

  30. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

So…how did the blister get infected so quickly? Don’t you have to have the blister first before it has a chance to GET infected?

  31. KB Says:

    Joe
You didnt really say this did u?? “Joe would appreciate you not directing folks to leave Joe’s site, unless it’s truly important. Thanks. –Joe”

Have confidence in your site…..if the content is good (which it is) they will return. Writing users with messages like that is a no-no…when u see posts u dont like..think of water off a ducks back. 😉

As far as NICKS issue, sounds like the pussification of the modern athlete is showing its ugly face. I wonder what the likes of Jack Lambert would say about his injury….suck it up…..pretty boy…nicks.

  32. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Scotty

I really dont know how he got it or when it got infected. you have to believe though that if it was just a regular blister it wouldn’t haven been taken this seriously.

  33. Joe Says:

    Chase:

It’s just you. Joe explained in the post how Schefter has excellent sources.

Joe respects Schefter. He does not respect his employer.

Thanks for being a loyal reader!

  34. Eric Says:

Pop that bad boy and lace em up. Unitas played the entire 58 season with a punctured lung and three broken ribs.

    A blister?

    Seriously?

  35. Joe Says:

    Eric:

    A blister?

    Seriously?

    Infected blister.

  36. chris Says:

The toe and the “franchise QB” that ends up costing Dominik his job.

You give Eric Wright a massive #1 CB contract last off-season? Fail. No longer with team. Got out of 7.5 million guranteed due to luck of him being an idiot.

Pays Carl Nicks top G in the game money. Davin Joseph top 5 highest paid Gs. Both on IR last year. Neither suited up yet.

Entire 2009 Draft Class gone, except the “FRANCHISE”?

Rockstar GM or halfway out the door from 1 buc place?

Let’s not to mention the investments in dline, no results.

  37. Adam L. Says:

I learned in 10th grade health class how to keep something from getting “infected.” The Bucs should just give me a CVS card and I’ll take care of the blisters.

  38. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Adam L

you are right about that. he should have cleaned the blister so that it did not develop into an infection. for that there is no excuse.

  39. BucSnob Says:

Oh please football gods let this be a smokescreen of some sort!!

  40. Eric Says:

Epsom salt. Works every time. Maybe some antibiotics to be safe.

No way it should take a month, so I question the report. Unless there is more to it.

  41. chris Says:

It’s quite easy if your medically educated to maintain a blister. Either the Bucs staff are a bunch of fools to “let the infection” progress.

I had a blister 2 months ago. the first thing you don’t do is pop it. You monitor it and keep an eye on it and keep it clean if/when it does accidently pop.

And I’m in sales. Not medical.

Did Nicks not say anything? Idk. But this doesn’t look good.

  42. Max Says:

You guys think this guy is just coasting from now on? Maybe he’s getting too complacent.

  43. T_Buc40 Says:

I had a blister on my shin a few years back that ended up getting MRSA. I assume Carl has a similar infection (only thing that grows that fast). I took two oral anti-biotics for a couple weeks and was fine and mine was a very bad infection (size of a golfball). I think Shefty may have his info a little off and i expect Carl to be playing by week two of the reg season.

  44. chris Says:

To be honest, I think it’s more of the toe. An infection clears up with antibiotics when treated right. If it’s the same toe, he should have been getting weekly check ups with team doctors on the progress.

I’m wondering how hot Mark Dominik’s hot seat is. Freeman? The big risk for Revis? The 4 high round picks invested in a dline that’s bottom 5 in pressures and sacks, a QB who is an enigma drafted in round 1, or his free agent busts (except Vincent Jackson)?

  45. BucoBruce Says:

Glennon playing lights out this year will make us forget about a blister!Bucs 11-5 playoff bound!!!!!!

  46. Ladyz Says:

The idea that Dominik knew that Nicks had a bad toe when he signed him is just laughable(reframed myself from saying $$$$$$$ &&&&&&).

  47. chris Says:

^^^^It’s not just the toe. Going big in Free Agency with no return on investment? No dom didn’t know. But it’s the NFL. It’s just a part of his past mistakes.

  48. Joe Says:

    Eric:

No way it should take a month, so I question the report. Unless there is more to it.

IF true, it tells Joe it’s a staph infection. Those mofos are nothing to screw around with. Joe knows first hand.

  49. Broy3434 Says:

Everybody just read Mitch’s comment. Anyone getting on Mark Dominik on this is absolutely foolish. Not too many other gm’s I’d rather have. How’s Trent Bulke doing in San Fran? Drafted AJ Jenkins hahaha Lemichael James AND Lattimore while having Gore and Kendall Hunter. He gets praised for nothing. Dominik has drafted outstanding. What a player does on the field I the coaching staff and players bidding. GM puts the best roster on the field he can with the resources he’s given. Everyone was praising god when Mocks was signed now people are hating anyone related to the signing and the player himself. So many trolls on here it’s ridiculous back. Back your team up an open your eyes and realize Mark Dominik is a rock star of a GM

  50. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I wonder if we will make a play for C/G Kyle Quinn

  51. the_buc_realist Says:

The Pop-star could be fired for “Bad Luck” alone. And that is without the mountain of other mistakes over the past seasons.

  52. Paul Says:

Schiano needs to let these guys heal up before throwing them out there in practice, its not 17-20yo kids that heal in a week.

“IF true, it tells Joe it’s a staph infection. Those mofos are nothing to screw around with. Joe knows first hand.”

Bucs have a story that says Nicks should be back for game one.

I agree with Eric on this one. I think they lanced it and have him going a full round of antibiotics. Because its on the same foot they are being extra cautious.

  54. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

chris Says: August 19th, 2013 at 10:00 pm
    ” (except Vincent Jackson)?”

More than Jackson. Several are on the team right now.

And Dallas Clark did okay. He was reliable. They just didn’t use him much.

  55. mpmalloy Says:

Every team has seemingly catastrophic injuries in pre-season.
Some of them even go on to win in the regular season.

  56. colombianostv Says:

Works every time. Maybe some antibiotics to be safe.

  57. farandula Says:

But I dont think weve seen that last of Nicks. He’ll be back !
