Mike Williams Gets His New Contract

July 24th, 2013

When Bucs players report to training camp this morning, one will be wearing both an unusual smile and have an additional task to take care of, different from the rest of his teammates.

All the hang-wringing and angst over Mike Williams and his contract negotiations can now end. He and the Bucs have agreed to a six-year, $40.25 million deal.

So that added responsibility Williams has today? Signing his contact when he shows up at One Buc Palace.

“Mike has earned this contract through his hard work and production,” Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik said in a team statement.

In Joe’s eyes, the cash couldn’t have gone to a better teammate than Williams. Good dude who produces.

Great news! We got this distraction out of the way early. Williams is worth it has proven himself as a #1 & #2.
Although all the details are not in, it is somewhat close to Victor Cruz’ contract…..link below.

  5. Gus Says:

Right around Sydney Rice money. This is great and couldn’t have happen to a better guy. He is getting paid what he is worth. Good job Dom.

  6. BucsfaninChina Says:

Apparently he was looking for Stevie Johnson money (5 yrs/$32.5m/$7.25m per yr) and id take Mike Will over Stevie any day. Dom gonna be happy he signed him now or he’d be paying redic money this time next yr. Great start to the day!

  7. Buccsfan76 Says:

AWESOME! Money well spent! Congrats Mike!

  8. delson Says:

    Family first MWill.

  10. Walter Says:

Revis fully cleared to participate in training camp.

  11. Biff Barker Says:

One last tweet of thanks Mike then delete your account.
    It’s time to play football.

  12. Buc'n Junkie Says:

I agree with all. Mike will be a Buc for a long time and he deserved to be rewarded for his hard work.

  13. Bucs Will Win NFCS Says:

He defintley out played his rookie contract

  14. Macabee Says:

Good for Mike, good for the Bucs, and baby mother ought to be happy too! I’ m happy, everybody’s happy!

  15. BucsfaninChina Says:

Is this Dom’s first resigning of one of his draft picks?

  16. Buc'n Junkie Says:

    ^^^ *poke* lol

  17. Buc'n Junkie Says:

    that was for Macabee

    baby mama …lol

  18. robert Says:

seems a bit steep for a #2, but then again he did outplay his rookie contract, has the right attitude, dude can play and does everything asked of him.

the price tag stings a little, but the good ones always do.

that and you don’t want him feeling he was low balled.

  19. BucDan Says:

I have a feeling that he is about to start training camp on the right foot!

  20. bucrightoff Says:

Great deal, cannot think of a Bucs draftee who’s earned it more in recent memory.

  21. TrueBlue Says:

Any word on how much guaranteed, and how it much is up front?

  22. TrueBlue Says:

Geez. …and how much of it is up front???

  23. Buc'n Junkie Says:

I can’t wait for JBF to square off with Big Dog @5!!

  24. Buc Fan #238 Says:

All I want to know is… what are the impacts if we have to release him?

  25. Buc'n Junkie Says:

Anyone who actually complains about Mike’s contract need to consider this. If we can offer a 5 year 35.3 million contract to Eric Wright, how is it Mike’s not worth a 6 year 40.2 million contract. At least Mike has earned it!

  26. madmacskillz Says:

Mike Williams is for real. USF fans remember him when he played for Syracuse. USF won the game, but no one could cover MIke Williams. Enjoy your pay day, young man, and then go play your best football. Can’t wait ’til the season starts!

  27. lightningbuc Says:

Love the signing! People know I’m not a Dom lover, but he did good here. That being said, I hope this doesn’t cause JFro to hang his already mentally fragile head since the Bucs are making him play out his initial contract.

  28. Theodore Says:

Mike – I am happy for you. Lots of players get their star transferred from college to the pro. You had to earn yours again. I’m glad it paid off, literally.

    Go Bucs!

  29. BamBamBuc Says:

Well deserved. Having watched last season over and over, we all were happy to have VJ on the team, but the guy that continually impressed me game after game was Mike Williams. Right now, he’s a VERY solid #2 WR, but with some more grooming could turn into a solid #1 WR down the road. Exactly what we needed to do, lock him up. Congratulations Mike, good work Dom, Go Bucs!

  30. mpmalloy Says:

Nice to know that Glennon will have a solid #1 and #2

    ….j/k

  31. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I knew it would happen at some point. Good number of years too.

The thing that gets to me is a local reporter said just yesterday that a deal was not near being done. I wish I could remember which one, because we all know he is unreliable.

Mike Williams deserves this payday. He came out of college under heavy scrutiny and he has played his butt off to prove everyone wrong. Now, if he doesn’t let it go to his head and get himself into trouble (like many players do once they get paid), the sky is the limit for him.

I am curious though…how will this affect next year? This is a good chunk of salary cap, and next year we have to resign Freeman AND another player (GMC?). The Revis contract is going to hurt a bit next year.

  32. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

My prediction is that the Dom bashers will hold this signing against Dominick if Williams gets a season ending injury.

  33. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

It was Scott Reynolds that said a deal was not close:

“…without any tangible signs of progress as training camp approaches, there is a chance that Williams might have to play out the final year of his contract before an extension could be hammered out…”

That’s some great insight that people get charged for over at PR.

  34. robert Says:

15 mill guaranteed is what my source says

  35. Bobby Says:

Good to see this out of the way. Dude is a stud receiver. Gonna be a fun year.

  36. rocmontana Says:

    @walter how you know

Boy-wonder does it again. What a joke! I hate the Bucs, secretly (not all that secretly) I am a Panthers fan and have a tattoo of Jimmy Clausen on my ass. Mike Williams is a terrible signing because he is too consisten to match up properly with how inconsistent J-Fro 6-pack is. Trade Williams for Brandon Lafell and Freeman for Clausen and the Bucs will have something going!!!

  38. aj Says:

I think this is a steal for the Bucs. He is a #1 receiver. It took some tutoring from Vincent Jackson to get there, but he did last year.

  39. Illuminati Says:

I’m so glad I can stop wringing my hangs.

  40. Jacko101 Says:

I bet Benn is like damn that could have been me

  41. Couch Fan Says:

Congrats Mike! I think you were just shown the love you were lookin for.

  42. Buc1987 Says:

lol Macabee…baby mama. I only have 3 jerseys left to buy on my list. Mike’s one of them. Congrats to Mike, well deserved.

  43. Fritz50 Says:

    “Illuminati Says:
    ” stop wringing my hangs.”

Now THAT’S a vaguely obscene statement, if I ever heard one…LOL

  44. 76buc76 Says:

Some guy’s should fire their agent’s (Colston,Cruz). William’s at 6.5M per is the right price. Considering he played underpayed, without complaining for 3 season’s. Best 2 in the league (If you count Jones and White both as 1’s). What is Freeman thinking? Not much cash left for him.

  45. PRBucFan Says:

We’ve just locked up one of the top 3 receivers at jumping up and coming down with the football in the NFL.

    IMO

Great job Bucs, I am so proud and pleased with how our FO has done business these past 2+ yrs.

We want to win now, we are building for prolonged success

  46. GenocideD Says:

Hey, we resigned one of our draft picks! Awesome and well deserved, MW! Very stoked about this guy and how much he’s come on so far. Here’s to ten more years!
