No Vote Of Confidence For Darrelle Revis

April 18th, 2013

So let’s say you are a new general manager of a team who is trying to rebuild from a laughing stock, butt-fumbling, foot-fetish stigma.

When asked if your best player will return this fall, you say you are not sure? Really?

This is what Jets general manager John Idzik said yesterday, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini, when Idzik met the fourth estate Wednesday.

Idzik declined to say if Revis will be on the team in 2013. Perhaps more importantly, he didn’t say if he wants the star corner on the Jets.

“I can’t tell you,” he said. “I don’t like to look too far ahead, I really don’t.”

You mean to tell Joe that three months is too far in the future?

Well, this sure smells like Idzik is going to unload Revis, and we all know the Bucs are the prime target. Now Cimini claims this may all change and Revis could have a new team in a few days: the Bucs.

Joe has written previously, and continues to believe, that this trade could could go down after the draft as much as it could prior to the draft.

In short, Idzik all but closed the book on Revis as a Jets player.

@Joe I need your help Revis to Tampa if you were a betting man would you bank on him coming or staying? Personally I think he is coming I don’t think Dom will mess this up.

  2. jb Says:

Boy, I’d love to see this happen after the draft, so we keep that #13 pick. We’d just better hope Josh steps up or we’re gonna really be missing that 2014 #1 pick!

  3. Sunny Says:

After the draft is the best once we pull down a cb the price for him will drop

  4. Sunny Says:

There were reports yesterday bucs have pull back their offer to just a first round pick instead of a 1st 3rd and 6th . . . Good move Dom after the draft drop it down to a second and bring the deal home

  5. T in Orlando Says:

Dominick’s reply when talking about Free Agency, the Draft and current roster (paraphrased):

“We don’t just look at what’s available this year, we also look as to who should become available for the next two or three years, both in college and Free Agents. Also we take into account our own players’ contract situations, seeing who is slated to be a Free agent in the next year or two”

Idzik on one player (the best on his roster), whether or not he’ll be on the team in 2013:

    “I don’t look too far ahead, I really don’t”

I get that the Revis situation is unique and fluid, and while I can sort of understand him saying “I don’t know”, the line about not looking too far ahead has got to be one of the dumbest things I’ve heard someone say who is responsible for not only the short term success of a team (or company) but also the long term success.

  6. BigMacAttack Says:

Where did the Jets find this guy? Was Matt Millen unavailable?

  7. DallasBuc Says:

This non-stop Revis blather is nauseating at this point. I’m losing patience with this topic and wish it would end one way or another so I can enjoy the draft.

  8. Dreambig Says:

Something tells me this deal goes down this weekend. I bet Dominic and Idzik are working together and already have worked out how this is going to go down. They are probably laughing their butts off at all the rumors and speculation.

  9. Dylan Says:

The trade will happen before the draft or never. The jets would be really really really really stupid to take next years first over this year. And if josh freeman doesn’t work out we need that first next year. Leave the 13th pick on the table until they accept the offer. There just waiting to see if they can go more picks who blames them there trading the best defesnive player in football we all would do the same. It’s a buisness and a waiting game. It will go down, before the draft. Next week will be the week for bucs fans to be glued to there smart phones.

  10. Dreambig Says:

Dominic has a press conference scheduled for Monday right? Coincidence? Maybe/maybe not!

  11. USN_BIT Says:

Revis would be cool, but that won’t bring us a Lombardi Trophy. He’s not as good as Deion Sanders, but he’s still a great player. We need to give Leonard Johnson and Eric Wright a chance to become little Ronde Barbers. Remember, they are in the NFL because they have SKILL. It’s not like any old chump gets in the pros. So stay tight. And for Pete’s sake JOE, PLEASE chill with the Revis stories. We get it, Dominik is unsure. I love your blog but 7+ stories on Darell Revis is just too much. Anyways 3rd 4th and 6th round picks should be good. MAYBE A 2ND. but i’d never give that 1st. They can kiss my butt if they want that. Anyways, it’s not likely we will get Revis in a few days. Dominik is putting this trade on life support, to break the will of Idzik. it’ll take a while.

  12. Kalind Says:

USn-bit, you make a ton of sense. Well said.
No way I give up a first. …like ever. Do people remember te Doug Martin maneuvering? One of the reasons for that move was to get the additional year under contract. Dom values his first round picks. He won’t give it up or 2014. He just won’t. That will not happen. Period. Full stop. Endo story.

  13. stevek Says:

    Kalin, USN_BIT,

Darrelle Revis is better than anyone we can draft at #13.

    Make the trade already! 🙂

  14. Pewter_Power Says:

    This needs to happen now.

  15. Vern4499 Says:

    @stevek

Completely agree with you. For people to act like someone in the draft this year is better than Revis is ridiculous.

  16. MarineBucsFan Says:

The little asian girl from rush hour 3. “Push the got damn button” lol

  17. Eric Says:

I really hope this trade doesn’t happen. Revis is a diva and I’d much rather see Dom unload those picks to trade up and grab three players in the first two rounds, like last year. Three new starters again this year and this team would be a serious contender.

  18. Mr. Patrick Says:

If I were a Jets fan, I would be very disturbed that my team’s new GM has no future vision for my team.

  19. Illuminati Says:

    @BigMacAttack

Where did the Jets find this guy? Well, for one thing, he was the Buccaneers’ assistant GM from 2001-2004, our director of football administration from 1996-2001, and a pro personnel assistant with us for four years before that.

So, I’d say he and Dominik have some history of working together. Don’t know anything about the personal dynamic between them, though.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

A GM that doesn’t look ahead. Hmn.

Guess the Jets will have cap issues next year too!

This is why the trade hasn’t happened. Their GM can’t see that they’ll get nothing next year.

  21. 76buc76 Says:

It’s not about landing the best corner in the league. It’s about landing the best corner in the league, coming off a serious injury. A year before we can get him healthy for free. Just make do with what we have and sign him next offseason. If Revis is a shadow of his former self. Then Freeman craps the bed. We’ll have no 1st rounder,no QB and a vastly overpayed corner. That senerio could tip the scales for upcoming Buc free agent’s to bail.
