Will Falcons’ Revis Interest Stimulate Bucs?

March 6th, 2013

The emergence today of the win-now Falcons as a team legitimately interested in trading for stud Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, per NFL.com, has Joe wondering whether that will prompt the Buccaneers to ramp up their interest in Revis, if they’re not salivating already.

Just recently, a good source told Joe that rockstar general manager Mark Dominik is always dialed in on the movements of his division competition and eager to thwart them. The source was referring to the likelihood of Dominik going after soon-to-be free agent Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes, but Joe would think the logic would apply equally to Revis and the Falcons.

As Joe’s written before, Revis seems tailor-made for the New Schiano Order defense, played for Greg Schiano confidant/mentor Dave Wannstedt in college, and the Bucs are historically desperate for cornerbacks. But Revis is coming off ACL surgery and wants a new fat contract starting in 2014. Joe has no problem whatsoever trading for him, but the price tag simply can’t be that high.

I am seeing a ton of writers on Twitter saying the Bucs are the most logical spot for this… I would love for this to happen but within reason. Now what would make this deal crazy? I don’t know

  2. 4everBucsFan Says:

The only way Revis would choose to play for the Bucs is if we offered to pay him QB money. He’s already said if he had a choice, he’d like to play for the 49ers, and I bet if Atlanta throws money at him, he’d probably go there too, since they have shown that they can make it to the post season.

  3. SirustheVirus Says:

WE DON’T NEED REVIS!!! Yes he’d be great, but I’d rather have 3 solid CB’s then 1 elite CB.

  4. Bucs Fan #238 Says:

Keep the draft picks, sign 3 CBs in free agency… 3 is better than one since 3-4 WRs are being sent down the field anyway.

  6. Greig Says:

I say let them have him.
I’d much rather them have to deal with his diva mentality, plus between him, Ryan, Jones, & White all needing or likely crying for new contracts soon they will be in cap hell.

  7. SeanyMac in SC Says:

I’m with Sirus on this. What good would it be to have one elite CB? The others teams will just throw to our weak link (aka the existing CB staff). Plus I think the price tag and draft picks would be too high. I would rather see us get solid CB’s and make it hard for the QB to find the open man.

  8. Jonny 3.3 Says:

Revis to Falcons is not as bad as it may sound. Here is why:

    1) Vincent Jackson owned Revis the only time he played against him. His advantage starts with height and physicality, and Revis will need to be born again bigger to defend VJAX.

    2) Revis’ presence in the division means trouble for other WRs and offenses in the division.

I actually hope they acquire Revis. They will have to spend picks and cap space on him and he wont really be that effective against us. Plays to our favor if Freeman has one of his better days accuracy wise while playing against Atlanta.

  9. big007hed Says:

I’m actually surprised, I figured there would be a push for him. A trade guarantees we get the player while Free Agency we are hoping to get the player.

  10. BIG SIR Says:

This years draft lacks elite talent, especially at 13 where the Bucs sit. I trade the 1st, a conditional mid round pick, possibly a player for him. If he is healthy of course. People are forgetting how GREAT he is.

  11. Capt. Tim Says:

The great Warren Sapp said- the way you win Football games, is that your good guys can win one on one match ups with their good guys. Those Bucs had a lot of guys that did that. These Bucs only have a few. Our guards, WRs, Penn, and Martin on offense. On Defense- really just McCoy and David.

Revis is an Elite talent. You always want to try and aquire elite players.

But he seems to always demand more Money, and may want a crippling amount. In that case, you pass

But if you can get him to a 3 or 4 year deal, sign him.!
You never regret buying the best

  12. MTM Says:

If the Bucs sign Revis. It would help short term but long term he would saddle them with a large salary and possibly multiple draft picks. It helps Atlanta with the win now mentality if they pick up Revis but it will kill them long term. Not to mention Revis can be attention whore with his contract extensions. I would stay away on this one if I was the Rock star.

  13. Fatmosh Says:

Assuming the price isn’t astronomical, I would like this new trend of only aqcuirig players if they are the best available at their position (See: Nicks, Jackson).

  14. Weber_88 Says:

If the price is right, pull the trigger. We can find another CB in the 3rd or 4th round as well. No elite Corners this year in the draft

  15. Macabee Says:

Hey guys, Don’t fall for the okie doke. Atlanta must resign Grimes, retain Sam Baker, and fill the holes at RB and DE. Atlanta does not have the pocketbook (cap space) to do those things and extend Matt Ryan, who most analyst believes will get Flacco money and do the deal that Revis wants. Not going to happen!

  16. SteveK Says:

    Please sign/trade for Revis.

We have butt loads of cap space. Why not get the best CB in the friggin game?

Hello, earth to fellow Buc fans: our secondary is putrid. Revis would instantly be our best player, and possibly the best player in the NFC South.

Wake up folks, we have 40 million+ in cap space. Revis isn’t going to hurt us too bad. Pay him QB money, smartly set up a contract, and draft a QB- thus relieving the need to pay that much “QB money” to the wrong guy.

Think of it this way, if the Bucs are looking to hand out “QB money”, than I expect a “QB like impact”, which is exactly what Revis will do.

Who is more worth of the “QB money”: Revis or Freeman? No question, sign, trade, and acquire Darrelle Revis.

He would only want 2-3 million more than GMC makes, shoot, Revis “deserves” that kind of money before GMC, fact.

  17. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’m trying not to get too excited about having Revis, but that’s becoming more and more difficult. Unfortunately, we’ve been down this road before (Jared Allen, Brett Favre, etc.), and we usually get the silver medal.

  18. Daniel Shreve Says:

    COME ON REVIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Legarrettes Blunt Says:

I would rather spend that money on Dashon Goldson and either Cox or Smith at corner. We have too many holes, we are not one corner away from winning sadly, we are 3 corners away, a safety, a tight end, and a slot receiver away from winning it all.

  21. Buccfaninhawkeyecountry Says:

Im so torn. Id love to have Revis n pay him if he was the same ol Revis. But if hes not…. man.. id also be good with goldson n damn near any 2 cbs on free agency. Id say as much as id give up is a 1st n the patriots 4th round we got if hes good to go. Maybe throw in blount since hes worth a first rounder instead of the first (kidding). But havin revis out there and still have the number one rushing defense. The passing d would jump way up with just him (once again if hes good to go) meh. Glad i dont have to make that decision. Im game with whatever we do as long as we dont give up too much if we go for revis.

  22. TampaBayTay Says:

Revis would be great and I wouldnt mind trading the 13th pick for him seeing there is no corner that will be sitting there, worth the reach.
What is a killer is the 16+ mil/year he will be requesting. Thats pretty much like taking away 2 solid FA signings (like a Cox/Smith and Goldson this year) per year for as long as hes under contract.
Either way, we will be upgrading the CB position and improving our team.

  23. TampaBayTay Says:

Though it might not mean much, Ive heard Dashon Goldson has expressed interest in playing for the Bengals. As there are so many smoke screens and what not surfacing right now, you just never know.

Wish i could go into hibernation til Tuesday, all this speculation is killing me!

  24. Que589 Says:

I got a feeling Dominik is the going to pull the trigger on Revis trade, giving up multiple 2nd rd and a 3rd, and making Revis close to the highest paid defender in the league

  25. Miracle Says:

We should hope the Eagles make a play for him.

We would be good if we could trade for Revis but we could be better if the Eagles did. #1 – the Eagles are projected to draft Milliner whom is without a doubt the best CB in the draft. This would increase the likelihood that we’d be in position to draft or trade to draft the corner. #2 – they would have to release Asomoucantspellhisname . He doesn’t compare with Revis anymore but he’d still be a great pickup at an affordable price.

I don’t know the likelihood of those events taking place but we’d be in a great spot if it did.

  27. pick6 Says:

the injury and the contract terms are worrisome, but without revis the jets would have had about as much success as the bucs over the last half-decade. rex ryan’s offensive and defensive philosophies, like schiano’s, fall apart without a shutdown corner. if you play a blitz-heavy scheme with mediocre CBs you end up giving up point totals like we did, and then the notion of ball-control offense goes out the window.
