Bucs Souring On Jets’ Demands For Revis

March 19th, 2013

Yes, it is past 2 a.m. Tuesday and Joe has potentially breaking news.

The quest for Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik to swing a deal with the Jets for Darrelle Revis seems to be going south, and no, not towards Phoenix. If reports are to be believed, the Bucs have turned their sights instead toward Brent Grimes.

The creator, curator and overall guru of ProFootballTalk.com, the great Mike Florio, is at the owners meetings in Arizona and he has learned that Dominik refuses to be held hostage by Jets general manager John Idzik for next month’s Bucs first round pick.

The biggest takeaway from our first full day at the league meetings in Phoenix is that, with the Jets and Buccaneers taking strong opposing positions as to the trade value of one of the best defensive players in football, the Buccaneers are close to moving on. The belief is that the Jets want a package headlined by a first-round pick, and that the Buccaneers are willing to part with, at most, a 2014 first-round selection.

The Plan B remains Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes, who has drawn interest from the Dolphins and the Browns. The Bucs and Grimes are, we’re told, talking — and if/when the Buccaneers land the Falcons’ 2012 franchise player, the Bucs will be out of the Revis business.

Florio explains it would be in the Jets’ best interest to quit playing hardball and play ball with Dominik. Florio details how people think if Revis walks after the 2013 season, the Jets would get a third round pick in compensation.

But hold up, Florio writes! Notice the Bucs got stud wide receiver Vincent Jackson last year and the Chargers got zilch in compensation.

So if the Jets don’t want to be left with their pants around their ankles and see Revis walk, they may want to take Dominik’s offer of the Bucs’ 2014 first round pick.

With Grimes talking to both the Browns and the Dolphins, Idzik better put down the magazine and get off the toilet damned quick.

Great! I think they will still go after Revis though even if they do sign Grimes.

  2. Joe Says:

    BucsFan:

Joe thinks the same thing. If Dominik pulls that off, Joe would NEVER want to play poker against him.

  3. John Says:

If it’s grimes we get, I’d have to assume our 1st round pick will be used on a CB still

We land the island, and we could potentially think D-line help with the departures of bennett and miller

  4. feelthepewterpower Says:

Am I the only one here that would not give up a first rounder of any year for Revis. Revis is a great player no doubt, but let the Jets bluff, and let him test free agency. Package a 2 and 4 for him, and reword his contract. If not, move on. As Joe says, we don’t know the status of his ankle. Is he damaged goods? We don’t know until live tackling starts.

  5. 4everBucsFan Says:

That’s the problem, Dominic is playing poker and it’s about to bite him in the ass. We’re pretty lucky that Grimes is still available. He should have been more active on other FA CBs.

  6. Raphael Says:

Rock star is playing perfectly……your move Idzik ….

  7. Raphael Says:

We get Star lotulelei and a starting cb …

  8. buccfaninhawkeyecountry Says:

You think Dominik told Grimes n his agent, allright if we dont get Revis, youre our number one option and will pay you more than any other team will offer so just hold off for a bit? haha Thats how i see it, i dunno why Grimes wouldnt be scooped up yet if that werent the case.

  9. Westcoastbucsfans Says:

Time to sh¡t or get off the pot! I would like to see us grab Grimes either way.

  10. Warren Says:

I say let Revis walk. The bucs are not a post season team in 2013 and we all know that. Use the energy for Grimes. If we land Grimes and work with the draft picks and cheap free agents we can win enough games to not throw the season away and address this problem next year where I think we will be closer to post season. This is getting ridiculous.

  11. BucNasty!! Says:

All I kno is this is a BUCS fan site but I hear more bitchin an moanin then a tiger at an all u can eat buffet wit no dentures sheeez patience is a virtue I don’t kno how some of u guys passed the third grade wit no self control I don’t wanna hear anybody talk about how proud they ate to eat crow or back trackin or double talkin if Dom pulls out a true rockstar move an land Goldson revis an grimes. N with his first round pick stayin an takin a star or Floyd or a Jarvis jones. Just chill it’s his job to make us better he has to have a plan u don’t just wake up to a multi million dollar job like this u actually have to b good at what u do don worry fellow pewter wearers he got this one lmfao I’m just Waitin to re read all the cop outs lmao lames…..BUC 4 LIFE!!!!!

  12. White Tiger Says:

This has to be the play Dominik must make. Idzik is new, he may eventually be a wonderful GM, but he is playing this wrong. He should not make the mistake of calculating the Dom is young, or the Bucs are a small market group.

Idzik is negotiating as of he does not aware that the player he is trying to sell is coming back from a significant injury, has not yet begin to run yet (even though weve heard that Revis “nearly” ready to begin running), only has one year left on his deal, and has a history of contentious contract negotiations!?

Sometimes smart people can’t get out of their own way.

The reason the time is short is that all of these things must be accounted for – NOT the least of which is the players unalistic expectations of his value.

It is very nearly time to move on…and lock up the second option before we lose our last best option at corner for this year. Dom and team Glazer have done all they could to land the set-piece for the secondary…but less able men are stalling and putting their personal issues in front of getting the deal done.

It’s time to move before we miss the last option. We cannot mortgage the future for one player, no matter how good he WAS, prior to sustaining and recovering from his worst injury, and his last, most contentious contract negotiation.

  13. BucNasty!! Says:

And y does everyone think we are that far away from the post season an goin deep into it? Did we not average 28 points a game(clearly enough points to win any game) also had the #1 ranked rush d( doesn’t it strt n the trenches?) all we need is a secondary now if we shore that up( n we will this offseason) shouldn’t we b a threat n the NFC?????

  14. Pete I Says:

Not worth a first round pick now or next year. Stand firm and don’t overpay for this guy, way to many issues.

  15. Hawaiian Buc Says:

It’s going to be very interesting to see who (if anybody) gives in on this one. Both seem pretty set in what they want. I’m not crazy about Grimes, mainly because of his injury, but I guess we could do worse.

Joe, do you have any feel on what the relationship is between the Bucs and Wright? I know neither side is going to say anything at this point, but have you heard any inside word on whether or not that relationship is repairable? Not that I want Wright, but depending on who we draft, we may not have much choice.

  16. Pewter_Power Says:

Personally I’m getting tired of all of this. If the Jets want to be stubborn and see Revis walk to the Patriots next year for nothing then let’s get Grimes and turn our attention to the draft.

  17. Rrsrq Says:

Bucs fans we may get Revis or Grimes, but forget Star in the first round, he is top 5 talent if he falls to 13 it is because of his health, so why would Dom take a risk at 13 if the teams above pass on him, Dom can’t afford to miss.

  18. Rrsrq Says:

Looks like Browns sending private jet to pick up Brent Grimes, so they will have two and we will have none. Time to step up Dom

  19. Mike J Says:

feelthepewterpower, I think the same thing. Sometimes a player post-ACL is never the same.

  20. Capt. Tim Says:

A torn Achilles’ tendon is alot more concerning than knee ligaments. Tendons heal with inflexible scar tissue.

Not good for a guy who makes his living backpedaling. Grimes was a great CB- but his medical issue is frequently a career killer. That’s why he’s still available.

If the sign him- his physical will be critical.
Good news is- even if he had a wooden leg, he’d be better than what we have.

  21. @MikeInTampa2 Says:

…b/c they Drafting a DT with the #13 Pick. Gimme Grimes..and Revis can go take a hike!!!!!

  22. Capt. Tim Says:

How cheerful of a soldier will wright be- now that the Bucs just cancelled his 12 million dollar guaranteed (unless he did drugs) contract? Think he’s still feeling Buc love.

The Bucs made a huge mistake overpaying/signing this guy. They got so Lucky, to get out of that contract. By doing so- they made it clear what they think of Wright. If he was an answer at CB, they would have payed him that contract.

If you watched him play, you’d have seen that he was over his head out there- and constantly beaten. The only reason it was just the ” wright gets humiliated show”, was because opposing QBs had so much to choose from- kinda like a Buffet.

The great Tim Ryan described it best. Opposing WRs were open thru out their entire routes. It was embarrassing

  23. Robbie_G Says:

GOOD move Dom. I agree give them a 2 and a conditional next year. I would not give up a 1 either. No other team is willing to give them ANYTHING close to that and pay Revis. This is going to be VERY VERY interesting in the next day or 2.

  24. Bucfan Says:

For those of you saying idzik is playing this wrong, you are out of your trees. Revis is a stud. Although I want Dom to walk away from this bc Revis will cause cap problems in the future.

Idzik wants to get the exact price for Revis and should. His first mistake would only landing a 2 and 4 for the games best cb.
No one wants to make that deal bc he commands 15-16 mil a year. That’s something I wouldn’t pay either for a cb. Not when you ca win with a solid defense.

  25. Mitch Says:

Joe, Then what does this mean http://m.espn.go.com/nfl/story?storyId=9068525? BSPN reporting that the bucs may give up their first for revis…

  26. Snook Says:

    FINALLY!!!!

Go sign Grimes and be done with it. Revis is drama already.

  27. tampabaybucfan Says:

Let’s hope we get Grimes. We should pass on Revis unless we get our price. Go after Revis next year when we don’t have to give up so much. If we don’t spend all of our cap this year….then restructure some contracts and save for 14. I think we will find a starting CB in round two. If we keep Wright we will be OK. What is happening with Ronde?

  28. @MikeInTampa2 Says:

@tampabaybucfan……EXACTLY!!!! Get Revis next year and give up ZERO Draft Picks!!!!!!!!!

  29. the_buc_realist Says:

i thought we were going to draft a real franchise QB with our 1st round pick next year?

  30. Macabee Says:

I said this yesterday, send the plane to pick up Chris Gamble and talk him out of retirement for a 2 year contract ala Atlanta Gonzales and re-sign ERighteous to a 4mil contract with incentives to make 5mil. Re-sign EJ and get the rest from a deep draft.

I support them in whatever decision they make, but personally, I’m ready to move on!

  31. Rickster Says:

    ^^ that’s what I’m saying…
Anyway, I it just seems like were running out if options here. I don’t belive grimes fits our system very well. I know he’s better than what we have now but coach s like tall fast CBS with long arms. Grimes is what, 5’10?
I think revis is our best option at this point…

  32. @MikeInTampa2 Says:

@Rickster…..Revis is 1 inch taller than Grimes

  33. Architek Says:

The underline here is the Bucs are becoming relevant again.

  34. Eric Says:

Dom might be good over at the dollar table at the hardrock, but his success as a NFL GM is legendary only in His own mind.

  35. the_buc_realist Says:

other than VJ has the pop-star signed anyone that was successful???

  36. Sunny Says:

This shows me they are not changing qb for several years. If freeman bombs out this year we can use our 2014 pick on a qb but by trading next years over this years tells me freeman is here to stay like it or not

  37. bucfanjeff Says:

Keep our #13 pick this year. Sign Grimes (and pray he’s healthy), then when Revis leaves the Jets next year after he’s proved he’s healthy, the Bucs can sign him and it won’t cost them a thing.

  38. flmike Says:

The Bucs are playing this perfectly, Revis is only worth a 2nd and a 4th and maybe a another 4th next season, plus a player (Blount). He is not worth a 1st rounder unless he and the Jets can prove he’s healthy and he agrees to sign either a new contract or an extension. The reality is all the pressure is on the Jets, like someone said earlier, poop or get off the pot, the longer they wait the more likely they are stuck with him, and apparently the only one who still wants him in NY is Rex and he’s gonna be looking for work come next January anyway, so I’m pretty sure his is the last opinion Woody or Idzik care about.

  39. bucfanjeff Says:

Even if we don’t sign Grimes, we can always restructure Wrights contract. Maybe we get Ronde back (though it may be best he move on) and we can draft Trufant at 13.

  40. Oldguy Says:

Let Revis walk. Agree. He want way too much salary (12 mil?) and the Jets want too many picks. Much better options available. But he better not lose Grimes if he has a chance for him.

  41. Macabee Says:

Talk about an alternate universe – at the end of last season, I was pumped even though we had the worst secondary in recent memory. When Dominik restructured Jackson and Nicks, I said game over, we’re going to fix this thing and be competitive in 2013.

I thought we would get a CB in FA, 2 in a deep draft, a pass-rushing DE somewhere along the line, just a repeat season from Freeman and voila, playoffs!

My head is spinning and I’m taking Zantac 75. What in the world happened? Where did I go wrong?

  42. gotbbucs Says:

I’m way more scared of Grimes achilles than I am of Revis knee.

  43. ctord Says:

love this article. Bucs can’t let all the corners sign and then get screwed by the Jets.

  44. MadMax Says:

@Capt. Tim…Grimes gimping better than what we got now…lol, true that.

  45. ben Says:

Personally i think we have been in contact w grimes the entire time also but waiting to see what was going to happen with the eric wright grievance. I think we will try to get both and d line with our first pick this year

  46. Patrick Says:

“The bucs are not a post season team in 2013 and we all know that.”

Yeah and I hope Dominick is outta here by next offseason! Sick of this loser mentality we’re all supposed to accept in Tampa.

  47. raphael Says:

    lmao ^^^^

  48. bucobruce Says:

BUCS win super bowl next year is what I think, and some of you think were not playoff bound are you stupid or what.Look at all the new players were getting this year compared to last year Davin,CARL NICKS wow,A. claiborne,Goldson, and counting, plus a hole draft.SUPER BOWL or atleast NFC championship.

  49. Capt. Tim Says:

Bucobruce- who’s your dealer, and is he accepting new clientele?

    That’s some potent hallucinogenics!

  50. lurker Says:

    @bucobruce

I appreciate your enthusiasm but even though I root for and have a positive outlook on the bucs, I am a buc realist…moreso than bucrealist 😉 …
…but c’mon man. superbowl bound? wow! great positive thinking!
