Bucs outgoing QB coach Ron Turner opened up this evening
The Bucs’ 2012 quarterbacks coach, Ron Turner, has exited the New Schiano Order for Florida International University. But Turner was back talking Bucs this evening with Tom Krasniqi on WDAE-AM 620.
Turner was adamant that Josh Freeman has all the makings of a franchise quarterback, and Turner explained that a Freeman offseason of studying the Bucs offense, versus learning it, will make all the difference in his performance.
“A second year in the system will definitely help him as far as consistency goes,” Turner said.
Turner praised Freeman’s work ethic and said Freeman “wanted to be coached” and “wanted to learn.”
Interestingly, Turner said Freeman’s game-film grades were better than many might think. And Turner specifically mentioned the Rams-Bucs game when Freeman had four interceptions, as an example.
In all, Turner was very positive about all things Bucs and very matter of fact about Freeman’s struggles, saying all quarterbacks have rough stretches.

I studied-up on the Kevin Gilbride Offense that Sullivan is running and its no walk in the park. Very High IQ players are needed or else the QB is going to look like a Big Doofus.

I remember Buddy Ryan punching Kevin Gilbride in the mouth he was so impressed with his clock management.
Gilbride’s offense always hangs the defense out to dry. A typical 3 and out might use 16 seconds of clock time and a quarter of that is the hang time of the punt.

I never see Freeman looking at playbooks or photos on the sideline. He just sits there with a blank stare of disbelief. Maybe he should start looking up to the elite QB’s like Payton Manning.

I would expect a coach or former coach to say things like this. Nobody wants to be that guy that bashes there current/former players. I just hope he is right. Not only for Josh’s sake but for the Bucs as well.

I am not sure what games your watching, but the games that i saw, after each offensive series Freeman sand Sullivan goes over the offensive plays and photos of the defensive formations.

@prbuc it says nothing about his ability to adjust. Peyton Manning also does it after every series. @Silencethecritics Tuner didn’t have to say anything about freeman. He could have just said he could a franchise qb and has things to work on to get there. Done. He elaborated because he really feels that way.

I said what i said because its ironic. Its supposed to be a great thing and if effective “Like Manning” you see effective adjustments made to the defenses. You don’t however see that from Freeman, so sarcastically I made a joke about his ability to adjust effectively to defenses. Essentially it’s like he doesn’t do it at all.

No matter what you think of Josh , this is our QB for now . Think he has ability to be good , what baffles me is is inaccuracy , I teach pitching and one of the first things I talk about is missing by a little and not alot . Josh can be the most accurate passer one minute and then can’t hit the broadside of a barn . Give your receivers a chance and the Bucs will win alot of games . And please get some corners that can cover and put the offense on the field longer , after all , Josh did throw for 4,000 plus and has the ability to be an above average QB .

You make some very one sided points about josh. your telling me that josh is a bad quarterback? His numbers don’t lie, the guy can be explosive. Give him some time to grasp the system he is running before you cut him loose. He is only 24 years old and is on a team of second stringers (for the most part) not to mention the carousel of offensive coordinators he’s has had. We are lucky to have josh, if you step back and take a look at the last two seasons as a whole you would realize that the TEAM is why Freeman struggles, and not the other way around. And don’t get me wrong I am bucs fan not a quarterback (Freeman) fan, and I am in favor of whatever will get us to the big game again. But I don’t think that any quarterback would have made a difference in what the D did to effect our playoff hopes this season. I do believe Freeman can get us there of we can build a dominant . If brad Johnson can do it josh Freeman can do it, and do more than once. If we had a quarter back like josh with the d of old, just think what Tony

I appreciate your opinion as well,
However, it seems we must agree to disagree.
Yes the team has struggled in other areas that’s undeniable but Free’s struggles go beyond that in my opinion. Until he is able to become consistent and more accurate things won’t improve for us. There are certain things that a vet going on 5 years should already be able to do or be comfortable with and it’s seems like for some reason or another that’s not the case for Josh, which is a problem. He should be able to calmly deal with pressure without falling apart by now, make his progressions, look off defenders rather than stare down receivers, make adjustments/proper audibles. All these things are not by any means too much to ask of him. I don’t understand why we must act like he’s only a rookie making rookie mistakes when in fact he going on 5 years making rookie mistakes. Struggling is common and its fine but Freeman doesn’t just struggle, he tanks and it really is costly when he does. Good Josh Bad Josh will never end well. I hope for our franchises sake we can remedy this in this next year.

I agree that josh needs to improve in a number of areas, but making a change now will set this team back years. The team as a whole is not strong enough to allow a rookie any success. let’s see how josh does in the final year of his contract. If millions of dollars won’t push him to improve the competition won’t. The free agent market won’t bring the answer this year. The way I see it is the team as a whole isn’t there yet, it will take a few years and some good draft picks on the defensive side of the ball before the TEAM is there and by then all of the Freeman questions will be answered and the replacement options could be a lot better than they are now. Great thoughts on your end I enjoy the debate. Consider Webber our practice squad quarterback in the event free doesn’t work out at least short term. And though bj had accuracy he lacked the big play ability josh has .

I agree that he should be allowed to play out the final year of his contract. He deserves that much to prove that he is capable of improving in those areas.
Next year will be a determining year for our team.
I’m excited for this offseason as well especially for the defensive side of the ball.

Any decent QB at the pro level can adapt to any system. Freeman not a college freshman. Plus he has no business hosting a midweek radio show during the season. Frankly, he has proven to me he hasn’t got the goods.
