Question For Bucs Training Camp

July 25th, 2012

How Greg Schiano transforms from a college coach to an NFL head coach is a key question for the Bucs as training camp looms.

There are a lot of questions about the Bucs as the players will begin to mingle tomorrow at One Buc Palace and begin training camp Friday.

Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com has one simple question for the Bucs, and it has to do with their new head coach, Greg Schiano.

How will Greg Schiano adjust to being an NFL head coach?

Schiano did an outstanding job transforming Rutgers into a relevant football program once again. But even college coaches who won national championships — Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier, Dennis Erickson and Schiano adviser Butch Davis among them — failed to make a successful transition to the pro ranks. Schiano’s last taste of NFL coaching came in 1998, when he handled defensive backs for Chicago.

Yes, yes, Joe has heard it before: What about Jim Harbaugh? He was a college coach, too! But Harbaugh has significant NFL experience as a player. For every Harbaugh, there are five Dennis Ericksons.

Schiano, however, can’t hardly do any worse with the Bucs as the team hit rock bottom last year, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

If Schiano was ever going to make a dent as an NFL head coach, taking over a team loaded with young talent that just hit the bottom floor is about as good of an opportunity as any college coach could get.

Would have to believe Schiano’s received a TON of advice from Belichick in regards to the nuances of the NFL and the NFL player, and like the fact that the staff overall has a multitude of years in the league as well. He’s openly admitted he has a lot to learn about life in the NFL, but I’m betting on him to succeed.

  2. CharlieB Says:

Schiano was loved by his players at Rutgers despite being a strict disciplinarian. As long as he maintains fairness and honesty, he’ll keep the respect of veteran NFL players.

  3. raphael Says:

He will do awesome, it’s not like he hasn’t coached different positions in the NFL before. Not a big deal ,

  4. Brad Says:

Let’s not forget Jimmy Johnson as well.

  5. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Team loaded with young talent? Can you please get off Dom’s jock for a second. It is embarrassing!

How does anyone know if they are loaded with young talent. They were 4-12 last year having lost 10 in a row.

Maybe they have young talent (Free, Clay ?)and maybe they don’t (Gerald, Benn, Price, Lewis, Bowers, Biggers) – but to make the blanket statement that they are loaded serves no objective other than to stroke DomDom – again.

We got it. You guys call me redundant. Geez.

BTW: How did the no College previous Head Coach do for you? 42-0 in 1.5 quarters anyone?

  6. SilenceTheCritics Says:

2.2 the year before they lost 10 in a row they won 10 games… what is your excuse for that? You dont win 10 games with no talent… i dont care how easy your schedule is… fact is EVERY team is loaded with talent, its the NFL they wouldnt be here if they werent talented. Instead of being an asshat every chance you get maybe… just maybe you can try being an optimist for once. Is it really that hard to atleast try to have faith in the team you claim to love?.. or is your life so miserable you just have to hate on anything and everything you hear about? You are truely the most pathetic and hateful person on this website.
You disregarded the entire meaning of an article and used it again as a chance to do nothing other than bash Dom.

  7. SilenceTheCritics Says:

Oh and to bash Joe for actually liking his team. If anyone is on someone’s “jock” it seems to be you on his.

  8. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Sometimes I just want to go the complete opposite of Thomas 2.2 and be as delusional as he is but to the other extreme. Just to add some out of control contrast.

As obnoxious as Thomas is about it, he makes at least one valid point. All of the talent on this team is unproven…except maybe Nicks and Jackson. The rest still have something to prove.

Even Clayborn must prove last year was not a fluke.

That said, I choose to believe a large percentage of out starters WILL prove themselves this year.

My only questions of the veterans) are Zuttah at center, Penn with his weight gain and aging body, Biggers (huge question), Price and Black. I think the rest will improve across the board, including Benn, Blount, Parker and GMC.

  9. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Schiano turned a Rutgers program around, and had a lack of talent there for awhile too. I mean who the heck wants to go to freaking New Jersey, if you are any kind of high school athlete ?
Ok, Tampa is far from a complete team, we have some holes.
But I think Schiano will rebuild us, and we will surprise some teams this year.
Hey, look at it this way. Nothing could be as bad as last year, right ?

  10. Thomas 2.2 Says:

See silence, even Pete gets it. Read your comments and then Pete’s, see the difference?

I do not hate my team, I am pissed at those who ruined it for 3 years.

I love Schiano and staff and believe that they will turn it around in time. I love ronde, free, DJ, VJ, Mike Will, Pig Penn, Nicks, Clay and Bennett, I am encouraged by Price, Foster, Wright and the Rooks!

I think Dom is clueless, and is a glorified low-level scout and nothing more.

All I do is correct mischaracterizations: if you act like Dom has been great – I weigh-in, same goes for Gerald, Blount ( who is explosive but woefully incomplete), Biggers, Talib etc.

I view the aforementioned as more of the problem than solution. I am not saying that those players are talent-less – just flawed or defective or disappointing and that needs to be identified when it’s accurate.

Too many of you fans think it’s helpful to not call bad football, bad football when it’s your team or player.

    We will see what

  11. Thomas 2.2 Says:

    Schiano thinks.

    I trust his judgment.

  12. Macabee Says:

Before we start to doubt whether Schiano will have a tough time making the transition from college coach to NFL coach, we need to acknowledge that he like every new NFL coach regardless of where they come from has a difficult time making it in the NFL.

Rather than blaming it on his college background (Eric), it may simply be – It’s not easy being an NFL coach. Take the 2009 incoming class of NFL coaches. I could have chosen any year, but in deference to Thomas 2.2, I chose 2009 because it’s Rah Rah’s graduating class.

In 2009, the following were hired as new NFL coaches:
    (1) Eric Mangini
    (2) Jim Caldwell
    (3) Josh McDaniel
    (4) Todd Haley
    (5) Tom cable
    (6) Mike Singletary
    (7) Jim Mora Jr.
    (8) Steve Spagnuolo
    (9) Raheem Morris
    (10) Rex Ryan
    (11) Jim Schwartz

Of 11 new coaches hired in 2009, only 2 remain – Rex Ryan (on FoxSport’s coaching hotseat) and Jim Schwartz (whose team is currently imploding from off-field violations). Keep in mind that there were 11 coaches fired for them to be hired. My point – this is hard work and few are consistently successfully. Bill Belichick and Sean Payton were fired once before becoming successful.

I expect no less difficulty for Schiano. He may beat the odds as did Harbaugh (SF) who may be the exception. But make no bones about it, this will be a difficult year, but my take is Schiano makes the cut. And if he doesn’t, it probably has nothing to do with his college background, but that this NFL coaching thing is just hard to do!

  13. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Interesting point. I admit to not knowing that there were 11 coaching changes in 2009, not all were due to firings I.e. Caldwell for a retiring Dungy.

More interesting though is that all 9 who are now gone were pro assistants and not College Head Coaches like Harbaugh. Hence, why they went after Kelly hard then Schiano.

Macabee’s analysis should show that Pro assistants are no sure thing either.

    Schiano has been both.

  14. Mike J Says:

I am keeping an open & hopeful mind. After all, the Browns organization didn’t like Belichik early on.

  15. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

To be honest, my brain is telling me it will take a season or two to turn the team around. My heart and instincts are giving me a feeling that we’ll see vast improvement this year, and that Schiano is going to be a very successful head coach.

I’m curious…which got better first? The Colts or the Pats? I know I could look it up, but the wife wants fun time right now, so I’m in a rush.

Are there any similarities to how that division became the best in football?

I mean, we have the Saints (who I think are being underestimated this year) and the Falcons. Brees is getting up there in years, but he’s got a few left in him. But we have Ryan and Freeman and Newton. I don’t believe Newton will be as good as the national media is trying to sell on us, and I think the battle for dominance will be between Ryan and Freeman once Brees calls it quits…maybe before.

  16. Scubog Says:

As usual, the comments center around the musings of our resident “sage”, Tommy 2.2; who no doubt has Chubby Checker’s big hit “The Twist” playing in the background as his introductory theme song. The guy can put a negative spin on Bo Derek. In Tommy’s eyes she’s barely a 7. He obviously hasn’t learned the difference between the words “fan” and “critic”. Guess which one he is. I still say, he’s on Joe’s payroll with a business card that reads, “Agitator.”

  17. Bobby Says:

Thomas a paid agitator?? Nah…he truly is just a miserable troll who just happened to stumble upon this site and decided to ‘bless’ us all with his infinite optomism.

  18. OAR Says:

“All I do is correct mischaracterizations”….Except your own!

Guess what? If you act like “Thomass” has been great – We weigh-in!
