Angelichio In, Cignetti Out

February 8th, 2012
Frank Cignetti, Jr., the former Rutgers offensive coordinator and Saints and 49ers QB coach, took a job with the Rams.

Joe never imagined he’d become so obsessed with Rutgers football.

Reason 1: The last time Joe was on the Rutgers main campus he left fleeing slow-footed dorm security following a brawl Joe didn’t instigate, though Joe did throw a couple of roundhouse rights.

Reason 2: Rutgers football has improved drastically, but it hasn’t been exciting since Ray Lucas was making plays.

But alas, Joe is now, temporarily, obsessed with Rutgers football as well as Bucs football. So it’s very intriguing to Joe that recent Rutgers offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti, Jr. is now the St. Louis Rams’ quarterbacks coach, so reported Alex Marvez of FOX Sports.

Cignetti, a former Saints and 49ers QB coach, was rumored to be on his way to Tampa Bay. Joe’s not going to assume the Bucs lost out on this guy, but that wouldn’t look good if they did. Joe certainly hopes Cignetti didn’t go to St. Louis because alleged Bucs offensive-coordinator-in-waiting Ron Turner didn’t want him.

As for a tight ends coach, per the Rutgers campus newspaper, The Daily Targum, Rutgers tight ends coach Brian Angelichio is likely to head to Tampa. Angelichio coached tight ends at the University of Pittsburgh before joining Rutgers. Prior to that he spent 10 coaching at Division III Ithaca Collage.

Joe wonders how Kellen Winslow would respond to that guy.

I hope you didnt get in a scuffle with any of Raheem’s uncles.

  2. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

WOW…..Pro Football Talk is having a field day with the Bucs not being able to hire assistants.

  3. SensibleBuc Says:

Yeah Florio just dropped a deuce all over Schiano’s Big East record…

    *sigh*

  4. stimpy Says:

    Hire Greg Olson? lmao

This is ridonculous! No coaching staff and no time to get one.

    GO BUCS!!

  5. SensibleBuc Says:

“Joe wonders how Kellen Winslow would respond to that guy.”

The 49ers hired a career college TE coach (from Stanford) and they did pretty well…but our guy is from perennial powerhouse Pitt and his claim to fame is coaching Dorin Dickerson…

    *sigh*

  6. chargedcbh Says:

This team better win the Super Bowl or the Glazers will have to sell this team and get out of town!!!!!!
This entire process of shopping in the bargain bin trying to find coaches makes NO SENSE at all…….

  7. bucfanjeff Says:

Why do I think the Schiano press conference is going to be the best part of the season?

It appears we’re taking who we can get.

  8. Brad Says:

Losing out to the Rams has to be a complete embarrassment. What a disaster. Glazers give the fans something to be excited about… Sell the team. All the brief excitement the fans had about the HC hire has already lost its luster. It was supposed to be all about 5 but we are going to hire a big time loser. Why not go after Shula or Clyde. We are going to be the most boring offense ever. If Freeman is looking for a bid payday he might as well forget it now.

  9. Buc Neckid Says:

    When is draft day again????
At Least RockStar Dominik will be handling the draft.

Best line heard on talk radio yesterday,
Caller asks host “…when is the Superbowl next year?”
Host responds “I think February 9th”
Caller interrupts”…maybe the Bucs will have a Coaching Staff hired by then”
Can’t think that this is the way the Schiano laid this out in his interview.
What are we at Options 3? 4? or what for the most important assistant coaches on the team?
    No OC.
    No DC.
No HC anywhere to be found publicly.
Hiding from this embarassment of not being able to even hire college coordinators.
Where is all of that talk about Butch Davis and Dave Campo et.al. now?

  10. raphael Says:

more doom and gloom Propaganda ??? btw Joe , noticed you didn’t land any punches ?whats up with that?

  11. Brad Says:

I’m sure Davis or Campo won’t come here cause the Glazers won’t pay them. I won’t blame Schiano if he walks away now. I have the feeling those warm fuzzies he got from the Glazers and Dominik are gone. In his presser about Trust, Belief, accountability was his rallying cry didn’t last with this ownership and GM. He can’t trust the Glazers in paying for good coaches, he now has the belief he made a huge mistake leaving Rutgers for this mess, he also realizes he can’t count on anyone good coming here. Yeah we still have our pop star leading the way.

  12. eric Says:

The fact of the matter seems to be the bucs were very content to sit back while other teams plucked the experienced coordinators, without so much as an attempt to interview any of them.

    Don’t get it.

    Well, actually I do.

  13. admin Says:

    Joe here,

@raphael – Where did Joe say he didn’t land a punch? This goes back to ’89 or ’90, and Joe doesn’t have much recall other than it was the first 10+ person brawl Joe landed in the middle of. Alcohol, other guy’s broads and Jersey are always a bad combination.

  14. raphael Says:

lmao…its the end of the world..

  15. BigMacAttack Says:

Joel Glazer is so cheap…… he won’t even tip his hat.

  16. raphael Says:

    @ Joe, you ” threw a couple roundhouse rights”….

which means A. you don’t remember what happened
B you punch like a girl and missed every punch…lol

    I’m hoping for A.

  17. Pete Dutcher Says:

    You know…it’s a funny thing…

…that none of the news on these hires and on the coaching search is confirmed…other than the requests being denied by other teams.

While this (I think) is the first rumor of an offensive hire, none of these hires are confirmed by the team.

I checked the main Buccaneers website and the Buccaneers Media section…nothing.

Clearly, the Bucs are determined to keep quiet until all the spots are filled. Which makes on wonder…how are the things we’ve heard being taken as fact?

Isn’t it possible that a guy like Turner, Cignetti or whoever could be floating claims of Buccaneer interest in order to open up other avenues of employment? Or at least their agents are?

    I mean, seriously.

Imagine a long list of names the Bucs are going over in meetings. I mean…due diligence, right? So nearly all names are on that list to at least discuss.

So the name Turner or Lazer comes up. So the Bucs, wishing to give it due diligence, decide they doubt the guy will fit, but at least decide to give him a brief call and feel him out. MAYBE he will say something that will sway them in his direction. Fair is fair, right? At least give the guy that much of a shot.

So the conversation happens…lasts about 20-30 minutes, maybe more, over the phone and the Bucs don’t want to insult the guy, so they say “Well, thank you for talking with us. We’re still going through our list and evaluating, but we’ll let you know one way or the other.”

Well…there it is…Turner or Lazer can now float the word that the Bucs have shown “interest” in them. Leak it to the papers. Maybe at least get a raise.

Cignetti can use it to get another NFL team to hire him.

Is this how things are going down?

Who knows? But it’s as feasible as claiming the Bucs are low-balling candidates.

    As to Florio…
While talking with Steve Duemig yesterday, Dog asked a question that infuriated Florio. Big time. I mean he came close to cussing.

Now, Florio took it as Steve insulting him, but it was clear to me that Steve was asking so that Florio could address the persons that were really asking the question.

But Florio took it as a direct question of his validity. Now Florio is striking back over an imaginary insult. Childish.

  18. Pete Dutcher Says:

Just checked and the podcast isn’t up yet on the Florio interview.

Forgot to mention…Steve ended the interview by calling Florio “Feisty”.

  19. ApatheticSucsFan Says:

I used to be optimistic, upbeat and have a positive outlook on our team…. I can’t say the glass is half-full one more time. What on earth are we doing, how many coaches are going to turn us down during this search? We are bumbling all over the place, with no press conferences called or statements given to explain these gaffes to your stockholders- THE FANS! This is not the first step that was needed to win back the fans…. we needed decisive and pragmatic action after the Schiano introduction, and we are getting more of the same ol’ modus operandi from OBP. Can I get an AMEN!?!?!?!

  20. Pete Dutcher Says:

Joe….I got SPAMMED again. Sheesh! My comment above will make no sense now, lol.

  21. bucfanjeff Says:

    Amen.

    Embarrasing.

  22. Pete Dutcher Says:

    THANK YOU, JOE 🙂

  23. Capt.Tim 2.2 Says:

    Pete- they never do.
    But we stil love ya!

  24. Joe Says:

    Pete:

Joe believes one reason you are having so many problems with the spam filter is that you are using HTML/Wordpress codes in your comments. Try using quotation marks instead of HTML codes for quotes you want to highlight.

  25. Capt.Tim 2.2 Says:

The only way I can describe this mess
The Glazers are running this team like Heartless Slumlords.
And Bucs fans are The tenants

Winslow will- and should-laugh at this guy. No way he should be coaching in the NFL ! Ithica?? Is this a bad joke?
Of the three coaching hires announced so far, not one is NFL calibre.

Now do you all understand why I was hating on the Schiano hire? Hes doomed to fail, and NO GOOD COACH is gonna jump onboard this sinking
    ship!

Again, Dom put us in a position where we can’t succeed. This lol school coaches will be a joke to our players- and should be.
We are the laughing stock of the league today!
Is it to soon to sadly say I was right once again?

  26. DHoft Says:

Didn’t we learn anything from the Schiano hire? Did anyone see that coming? Was he even on anyone’s radar as a possibility? Why does everyone assume that the Bucs are going to be transparent about their hires. They could already have an agreement with someone that all you guys are screaming for (Butch) but are waiting to announce the staff all at one time. Who knows? You guys are so quick to assume the worst.

  27. Josh Says:

    just found this:

  28. jvato24 Says:

Winslow will respond well to the new TE coach. or he wont be a BUC.

I like Winslow … But he seems to have a bit of Shockey effect on Freeman. He doesnt block. I think this will be his last year in Tampa.

  29. Capt.Tim 2.2 Says:

    Javato- nope.
In the NFL, players are the valued resource. Coaches come and go. Players never leave- unless they do stupid things to embarrass the organization

  30. eric Says:

Dungy picked his staff easy as pie. Folks flocked to coach with him.

We cant even get guys coaching college ball at Oregon, Florida, and Virginia, and maybe Rutgers.

    Wade Phillips cancelled his interview!

Hell USF had more people interested in coaching there after Leavit. Skip Holtz filled his staff with no problem.

    A tad disheartening.

  31. Trox Says:

So you wanted Wade Phillips to interview? So sad if you wanted that to happen, and sad if you complain about him not interviewing because it would have been a waste of time.

  32. eric Says:

At this point Wade Phillips looks better every day.

  33. Posey99 Says:

Everybody is getting their panties in a knot. This was expected, when you hire a coach late hes going to hire assistants late, duh. You can bet your A$$ Bill Belichet is giving Schiano advice on who the good guys around the league are since their buddies. Call down geez

  34. MrGone Says:

Where’s the list of coaches who have turned us down?? Confirmed list, no heresay, no rumors, no BS, where’s the list?

  35. SensibleBuc Says:

    @ Posey99

The problem with that line of thinking is that Schiano can KNOW who the best guys in the league are all he wants but that doesn’t mean we can actually get them because other teams won’t release them to be interviewed.

At this point we’re going to have to go with NFL coaches who currently don’t have a job (aka the bottom of the barrel) or college coaches.

  36. Joe Says:

    Posey99:

You can bet your A$$ Bill Belichet is giving Schiano advice on who the good guys around the league are since their buddies.

If Bill Belicheat is actually advising the Bucs to hire Ron Turner, then the whole “Schiano is ready for the NFL” Belicheat spun is an absolute ruse.

  37. FreemanBomb5 Says:

“If Bill Belicheat is actually advising the Bucs to hire Ron Turner, then the whole “Schiano is ready for the NFL” Belicheat spun is an absolute ruse.”

Belicheck is known for not always being honest. I heard his son was Rutgers long snapper so ol Bill certainly had every reason to give praise to Schiano. If we were the Jets, Phins, or Bills he probably would’ve said that Schiano is one of the best coaches he’s ever been around. Bill lies don’t put too much into him praising this Schiano scrub.

  38. Capt.Tim 2.2 Says:

Bellicheats cares about one thing- the patriots winning games. He isn’t going to help a rival improve- are you nuts?

He gave his lil speech about Shiano, then went back in his office and laughed his ass off. Then he checked his schedules to see how soon he could beat up on the Buccaneers again.

Does it even make sense to any of you, that a ultra intensive competitor would try to help an opponent???

You don’t know any NFL coaches then. Worst job security in the land. Believe me- they don’t wanna help any team but theirs.

  39. Thomas 2.2.. Says:

Winslow is as good as gone, he is very average and when you include that he is a cancer – adios – he epitomizes RahRah’s incompetency.

Rutgers was exciting in 2006 when they embarrassed RahRah’s porous k state defense and free 38-10 in the Texas Bowl to move Rutgers to #12 at year end in the AP poll (not bad for a “tiny school”).

Who knows why Cignetti went to St Louis? Maybe the Rams offered more $ – fits our owners style.

3 year ago when we had the completely clueless RahRah Morris as head coach and they were losing coordinators before and during the season and not replacing them – you RahRah sniffers were supporting it. We actually went nearly the entire RahRah debacle without a single coordinator (Olson was qb coach given additional responsibilities and RahRah was HC given additional responsibilities.

Now you sheep freak out when it’s announced that a rumored candidate didn’t accept the job – so what.

Just look in the mirror and say: “RahRah is not our coach” 3 times and your blood pressure should lower and you should feel better. We just ended the most ridiculous chapter in Buc history – feel happy about that. It could not possibly be more amateur and Mickey mouse.

  40. Cmurda Says:

Well, sometimes you disagree with a guy and sometimes you agree with a guy. Thats how it works. Me and T 2.2 are definitely on the same page here. Well done man!

  41. jimmy Says:

“Winslow is as good as gone, he is very average and when you include that he is a cancer – adios – he epitomizes RahRah’s incompetency.”

Amen! Get rid of this cancer. Whining about how he didn’t get his coach selected. Wah!
