“It’s Like If Someone Slapped Your Wife.”

January 24th, 2012

Joe can find few if any Bucs fans who are racing through the streets in celebration that the Bucs are one step closer to hiring Mike Sherman to replace jettisoned Bucs coach Raheem Morris.

Given Sherman’s heated past with former Bucs great Warren Sapp, it seems ironic at best the Bucs would even consider Sherman for that reason alone. Just the fact Sherman got one interview provoked Sapp into a series of stabs at Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik on Twitter.

Count Shaun King to be confused by this move as well. King, who may have saved Sherman from a hospital visit when he came between Sapp and Sherman during their faceoff, all but said while co-hosting his “King David Show” with Toby David, heard on WQYK-AM 1010, if Team Glazer hires Sherman, they are ex-communicating Sapp from the Bucs franchise.

“It’s anti-Warren Sapp. They can’t have it both ways. It’s like if someone slapped your wife. We cannot hire Mike Sherman,” King said. “You cannot hire Mike Sherman, no if ands or buts about it. If you hire Mike Sherman you are anti-Warren Sapp.

“You have to choose if you are a Bucs fan. You are either pro-Sherman or pro-Sapp. If you are pro-Sherman, you are anti-Sapp. If the Glazers hire Mike Sherman, they are anti-Warren Sapp. If the Glazers hire Mike Sherman, Warren Sapp never gets in the Ring of Honor.

“If you are pro-Sherman, you are not a Bucs fan any more.”

About the only interesting thing Joe can see coming out of hiring Sherman, in a perverse way, is to see Sapp’s angry reaction to the move.

Shaun King gets dumber by the minute. There are many reasons not to be excited about Sherman, but the Sapp incident is not one of them.

  2. mike Says:

grow up s king!!! what a stupid opinion!!!!!!!

  3. stevek Says:

    S King’s opinion sucks!

But I am with Sapp, but his block on Clifton was “legal” and “gruesome”.

    No Sherman, please.

  4. raphael Says:

stfu king , your a fat idiot…Sapp was a great player but a real a-hole person.Sherman just sucks thats all….

  5. kh Says:

Agree, I hate Sherman, but this has nothing to do with Warren Sapp whatsoever. Another day, another dumb opinion from Shaun King.

  6. NunPuncher Says:

Mad thanks and respect to Sapp. But that photo is laugh-out-loud funny because Sapp & Sherman both just look totally stupid. I really hope they don’t hire Sherman.

  7. TAC Says:

Sapp should just agree to disagree with the former HC, and move on in a professional manner.

If Sherman is hired, and disparages Sapp in any way, he better win a Superbowl pretty damn quick, or he would be run out on a rail.

Sapp is a big boy with a gargantuan mouth, who keeps bumping his head on the high road. He has much less to lose than Sherman in this silly squabble.

BTW, I saw a similar blindside hit in a game on Sunday, a little closer to the play, but no chance the dude without his head on a swivel was going to make a play. Hit was legal at the time, and don’t know if anything has changed.

  8. OAR Says:

My eyes roll everytime he speaks!
I’m not totally for Sherman, but, right or wrong, you don’t want a head coach who cares or stands up for his players?

  9. kh Says:

I’ve read too many of these Shaun King says “[insert something dumb here]” posts on the blog. I think its time to move onto getting Don King’s opinion now.

  10. Big Marlon B Says:

who pissed in his corn flakes? mike sherman stuck up for one of his players, for something he (and many others) felt was an unnecessary hit which left his player seriously injured. if anything, sherman should be applauded for having the marbles to stick up for his guy, and confront a pretty large intimidating man about it. sherman did what he felt was right, and i guarantee he earned tons of respect from all of his players for doing that. he shouldn’t be villified for it. he didn’t sexually assault sapp’s mother….and it was like 10 years ago. give it a rest!

i’m not saying i think sherman is the right coach for this team, because i dont. but to attempt to create a divide in an already dwindling fan base, that is struggling mightily to sell tickets and maintain interest….thats pretty irresponsible. this is not the Civil War, its a coaching hire. and we shouldn’t use a post game argument over a borderline dirty hit from 10 years ago as the main deciding factor. if sapp still played, maybe i could see this being a relevant issue. but he’s long retired….so shut the FFFFFFFFF up King. his bitterness is pretty pathetic at this point.

  11. BucFan South Tampa Says:

I like King, but equating this (a football business decision) with someone assaulting their spouse is just plain stupid. He should apologize today and on the air. Shaun King is better than this.

That being said, how about being pro-Buc. Lets do something thats good for the team, instead of our own little social group.

  12. Buc Neckid Says:

While it is not the ONLY reason not to Hire Sherman,
I have to admit that i did think about this as well and agree that it is kind of like a slap in the face of Sapp.
And to Bucs fans as well.
I remember that moment well and thought M.Sherman was not out of line in defending his player, but he was wrong. And Sapp, A$$hole or not, was doing what he supposed to be doing. He was all hustle on that play and Chad Clifton was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. As a fan it was something to see a 300 pound lineman get upended like that. it was a violent hit that broke Clifton’s Pelvis(?) and the injury and loss of his starting offensive lineman was what really pissed Sherman off. At the time, the Packer’s were the most despised team in the NFC and the Bucs had to beat them to get to the next level. Sapp brought that necessary intensity and that hit was significant in changing the image that the Bucs were no longer going to be the Bitches of the NFC anymore.
That moment was an important moment in Bucs history from an attitude changing perspective, and yes, ignoring it’s relevance and “disrespecting” a team member of that team – Sapp by hiring the “enemy” in this example as the new head coach, WOULD be a slap in his face, the Fan’s face and the Buccaneer’s organization’s face.

  13. Nate Says:

That statement from ‘Shaun Queen’ was the dumbest and most exagerrated statement I have heard in a long time. Who cares about who pissed off Warren Sapp? That guy hasn’t played for the Bucs in close to 10 years and is the biggest douche bag I’ve ever met. If the Bucs have to exile every person Sapp didn’t get along with, I’m sure the remaining list of people would be pretty short. I’m not a huge Sherman fan, but to say that you are not a Bucs fan if you support possibly the next Bucs coach is just stupid. No one individual is more important than the entire organization. Even Sapp. And what the hell does that have to do with Sapp being in the ring of honor!?!?! King’s statement just gets me more confused the more I think about it.

  14. Big Marlon B Says:

    @ OAR i agree 100%.

i’m really not thrilled about Sherman but i think if anything, that incident works in his favor because it shows how much he cares about his players.

Sapp was a great player and a true legend….i will always be greatful for what he did for the team. but everyone knows he isn’t exactly a choir boy, and he tends to run his mouth quite a bit.

judge Sherman based on his qualifications and resume….not because of a massively overblown issue with a guy who hasn’t played here in 8 years.

  15. K2theSoldier Says:

A little extreme to say you’re not a Bucs fan if you’re pro Sherman. But I agree. Sherman just isn’t the right guy. It would show a total disconnect between the Glazers and the fans (if they haven’t already shown enough of a disconnect). It would be a slap in the face, and I would have a hard time accepting it.

  16. Bobby Says:

@Buc Neckid… Sherman is not the enemy pin head.

  17. McBuc Says:

Still do not follow why you guys are set against Sherman. King is the only one who has said why he is against the hire. Joe says he is boring, but I have not heard a reason about his coaching ability in the NFL.

  18. Dave Says:

I don’t get it really. Is there more than that one incident between Sherman and Sapp. I mean, it was one thing on the field, in the heat of the moment.
Sapp hasn’t moved on from that?
I am not anti-Sapp as a Buc player (as a person, I have strong doubts backed up by many, many stories in the local area)

But this all seems ridiculous. Get over it Sapp. You laid out one fo his players (legally I will add) and, as a coach, he stood up for that player and took offense to the action and thought it was unnecessary.

I am pretty sure Sherman has probably gotten over it.

Do not get me wrong. I am not advocating Sherman as the coach, I just do not understand why this appears to be such an issue. Quite honestly, other than to Sapp, and some fans and King buying into the media hype over it, I do not think it is an issue to anyone else.

  19. DieHard_Bob Says:

Hey Shaun, Climb down off your little soapbox and shut the hell up! It doesn’t matter if Sherman was right or wrong that day against Sapp, the bottom line is that I have a lot more respect for the man for standing up for his player than I would have had if just let it go and said nothing.

  20. Matthew Says:

King shut your mouf! You’re the worst.

  21. jarrett Says:

If the glazers are pro sherman than they are not fans of buc fans. Pro Sherman means Pro empty seats

  22. Garv Says:

This is without DOUBT….THE most idiotic thing that has come out of that BUFFOON Shaun King’s mouth. And that is REALLY typing something.

THIS is a reason NOT to hire the man? OMG……….

There may be reasons to be in favor of hiring another HC here, I get that. There are other HC’s I’d like to see considered first…..for sure.

But to say what Shaun King did is about as asinine as it gets. How the hell does this fool stay on the air? He and Ian Beckles need to leave town and give the entire area a break.

Yeah, let’s not hire a man on the basis of a disagreement with a player ten years ago. And if you’re pro Mike Sherman you’re not a Buccaneer fan anymore? Warren Sapp does not get in the Ring of Honor?

    How STUPID is this man?

    Breath Garv, just breath…….

  23. eric Says:

The hit was deemed legal by the league.

The guy ended up recovering fully.

Understandable Sherman would react and Sapp would respond in “Sapp like” fashion.

Very juvenile to think it would have any influence over the current selection. But King is that way.

  24. Pete Dutcher Says:

King is an idiot. and needs to grow up.

Sapp is in the media now…the first time he has to interview Sherman (if Sherman gets the job, which I don’t think will happen) he will kiss butt and make nice. It’s his job.

Besides, I’d heard the two men made up later.

  25. gotbbucs Says:

Good Lord, this is getting ridiculous.

  26. TurnThePage Says:

Now, NOW I hope the Bucs hire Sherman… just to P-off Shaun King and the other sports experts.

I always thought that this fanbase needs a unifier… but I don’t think that is possible this day in the age of instant information/internet.

So, since Shaun King and (you know who else) on the radio will complain about ANY coach hired, it may as well be Sherman… this way, Buc fans can be entertained all week long with the constant back and forth about the coach.

  27. jfgobucs Says:

Can’t we all just get along…GEEEEZ

  28. sandbagrudy Says:

I’ll be honest here I almost walked away from the Buccaneers when they let Warrick Dunn go. The Guy is probably the most respected player in the history or the league. I put emotion in front or reality at that point I’m not sure exactly what the reality of the Glasers decision to let him go was but my reaction was this whole situation is terrible. I experienced that feeling three more times with Sapp, Lynch, and Brooks. They never repleneshed these players. They have let go of some impact players unexpectedly and even pushed away leadership in management Rich Mckay. Alll to become the bargain basement team that they are today. plucking practice squad players misfits from other teams. I’m under the impression that this sav a lot mentality the glasers are force feeding the Buccaneers fans is going to be a long ride. No one with an answer is heading anywhere near Raymond James who wants to be Captain of the Titanic

  29. jb Says:

“It’s anti-Warren Sapp. They can’t have it both ways. It’s like if someone slapped your wife. We cannot hire Mike Sherman. You cannot hire Mike Sherman, no if ands or buts about it. If you hire Mike Sherman you are anti-Warren Sapp.”

I said the exact same thing when I first heard the Glazers were interviewing this clown! He’s done virtually nothing to warrant even an interview!

  30. Buc_The_World Says:

This was not the only reason Shaun gave, he also said that sherman was a poor coaching prospect despite the Warren Sapp thing. This just made it worse because he is a poor candidate and he had an altercation with one of the greatest players in Bucs history. I’m inclined to agree. I can understand if it was a top coaching prospect, sherman is a joke.

  31. mh Says:

Please no Sherman could care less what Sapp thinks tho.

  32. eric Says:

Here is a fascinating article about Mr. Sherman. It looks like Rick Perry of all people pulled some strings to get him hired at A&M…….

    http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local_news/article/Sherman-out-when-he-shouldn-t-have-been-in-2339445.php

rockstar what the hell are you doing?

  33. bucfanjeff Says:

And if we offer sherman less than the reported 6mil for Kelly, what does he think or say?

  34. Richard Says:

Sapp hasn’t played for this team in almost nine years. Unless he’s somehow been hired to a front office position without any of us knowing, he should have zero bearing on what coach we hire.

  35. Meh Says:

Sherman isn’t even close to my first choice, but most of this venom is just way over the top.

  36. TheProsUseAdvoCare Says:

lmao King gets payed to say this stuff. I know I don’t listen to him. Neither should any of you.

  37. RCH Says:

” If the Glazers hire Mike Sherman, Warren Sapp never gets in the Ring of Honor.”

    ______________________________________________________________________________________________

I think that’s a pretty ludicrous statement there and don’t see how Sherman has that kind of pull.

  38. ATLBuc Says:

Yeah this is just, even for King. If anything it makes me respect Sherman more. It shows that he’s willing to stand up for his players even at the risk of getting swallowed whole by a monster like Sapp. In fact, this is one of the few things I like about Sherman. Still don’t want him to be the coach though.

  39. k1ngadroc Says:

I think it was a legal hit and should be left on the field …. BUT this organization is lacking leadership, a sense of history and PRIDE! letting go the players that built this organization in “sheepish” fashion and not getting the back of it’s players even if it might seem juvenile to some.

Sapp built this team and like him or lump him, we should acknowledge and respect that fact, have some pride and incorporate the Lynchs, Sapps and Brooks into the organization at higher levels. No Sapp, no Superbowl. Get his back people…. and Sherman is a really bad hire anyway, publicly and from an organizational standpoint.

Glazericks have nothing in their collective abdominal regions. If this was the guy, they should have hired him straight away. perhaps the Kelly deal was just a ruse to make the fans think they are willing to spend money… just like they almost got Haynesworth, almost brought in Brees, and almost got sproles…. etc… bunch of Bull($)hit

  40. Big Picture Guy Says:

King has a fair and valid point. Though maybe Sapp and Sherman would get over it quickly if the team finds success. If (and probably) not, then we might lose him for a while. But that is just one situation with one person.

The Glazers won’t own this team forever, and that bridge can always be rebuilt. Besides, we need someone to play that “bad cop” role against us in national media. Sapp won’t be polite but he will always tell it like it is!!

Sherman shouldn’t be the guy, but it shouldn’t even have to get to that point to realize that there are better candidates out there. Sadly I fear that the Glazers and Sherman are the most desperate coach/ownership combo in the nfl at this point, and that this is gunna happen.

Could be a sad state in Tampa Bay for a while if this hire is made….

  41. mark2001 Says:

I don’t feel hiring Sherman is a slap in the face to Sapp.

It is a slap in the face to long suffering Buc fans. Sherman has NEVER shown he knows how to develop young talent. He may be able to yell and act like an ass, but has snown nothing else.

  42. stevek Says:

NO SHERMAN NO SHERMAN NO SHERMAN NO SHERMAN NO SHERMAN.

DOM, NO SHERMAN, “Rock Star” needs to step up and hit one out of the park.

  43. I_Miss#40 Says:

Can someone slap the Pillsbury throwboy for making that stupid state.

  44. MJ Says:

lol someone is hurting for ratings apparently

I experienced that feeling three more times with Sapp, Lynch, and Brooks.

This sort of talk makes me sick.

Sapp had ceased getting along with Monte and he wanted top dollar to stay. At the time he was showing his age and it was a gamble to keep him. He only had one or two good years after that I think.

Lynch was a mistake, no doubt. But at the time he had suffered a neck injury and there was concern another one would paralyze him. The same happened with Alstott and he chose to retire, Lynch did not. There was no way of knowing he would continue to play well.

Brooks was using a walker on the field. Great leader. Fantastic leader, which this team needs, but I knew his day was done when he was outran by other teams slower players and the television host joked about it.

The other reason this stuff ticks me off…Buccaneers Fans complained for YEARS that or team was getting too old. They insisted we get younger…well that meant getting rid of the older players. So the fans got what they wished for.

  46. Pete Dutcher Says:

Oh, and as to Dunn…he was no longer effective with the Bucs at the time. He was aging as well. He still had a couple acceptable years left in him, but he actually WANTED to leave.

  47. dave Says:

Dave says. It been quiet to long. I smell smoke. monte Kiffin for HC? or=====

  48. Fear The Glow Says:

Shaun King has turned into quite the drama queen lately.

ESPN should give him a full time gig.

  49. Pete Dutcher Says:

    I VOTE NO TO SHERMAN

But…if that’s who we end up with, I will throw all my support behind him.

I think I mentioned elsewhere that I don’t think the first guy they give a second interview to will be signed.

I think we might end up with Marty.

    BY THE WAY….

Be preparing yourselves for Tom Clements deciding to reject a second interview…just in case he does. It won’t be a rejection of the Bucs…if the packers off him OC, he will be next in line to become head coach of the Packers. Like it or not, right now, the Packers are a bigger opportunity.

I’m hoping he won’t refuse…but I can see where he might.

  50. sandbagrudy Says:

@Eric Pulling strings Rick Perry Joe Perry Jimmi Hendrix what ever. no one is going to be there when the band starts to play in September this ship has holes in it and they are using masking tape to plug them up. I go back to the fat girl at the prom mentality here not only is she fat but she stinks and you have to feed her.

  51. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @Dave
Kiffin would be a HORRIBLE head coach.

  52. Pete Dutcher Says:

However…I COULD see Lane being given an offer if Monte become DC again.

  53. knucknbuc Says:

Shut up Shaun King! Why the hell you even talk about the Bucs is beyond me because half of the time you make no sense. Put this up with the other dumb things Shaun King has said. So hiring Sherman would be like someone slapping my wife because he got into it with Sapp like 10 years ago. Uhm… no what a terrible analogy. Shaun should of said hiring “Rob Johnson to be coach would be a slap into the face of shaun king because his scrub a$$ took your starting spot after your first season.” So shaun queen is saying that Sapp wouldn’t take a spot in the ring of honor if they hired sherman. Call me crazy shaun but I don’t think sapp would give a crap if Sherman was coaching or not he would take his spot in the ring of honor. And sherman isn’t my first choice I really hope he doesn’t get the job. He runs a boring wc offense and his gb teams were good but had great talent, that didnt put it all together when he was there.

  54. Hillbilly Heaven Says:

King is an ass, but if it is Sherman, they’ve done serious damage to my loyalty to all things Buccaneer.

It’ll be hard to get fired up for 2012, that’s for sure

  55. Pete Dutcher Says:

    sandbagrudy Says:
    January 24th, 2012 at 4:23 pm

…September this ship has holes in it and they are using masking tape to plug them up…

I’m sorry, but that attitude suck and is so far from the truth that you sound ignorant.

We need a coaching staff. That’s not so bad. And guess what? There are PLENTY out there. Good ones. We have a good week or so before HC MUST be filled…maybe even 2 weeks.

Remember….the SB teams will have people being interviewed this weeks as well (with various teams). Some in secret.

  56. pool fence tampa Says:

Well, I am not a Sherman fan at all and I certainly hope he is not the choice. That being said, I don’t think it’s as big of a deal as Shaun King makes it out to be. Sapp has been gone for years and while I was a Sapp fan, I don’t get King’s take.

  57. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @Hillbilly Heaven
    Unless they start winning, right?

There’s a name for that…can’t seem to recall what it is though…

  58. stevek Says:

    @PeteDutcher,

    Q for you,

What if Bucs put some “duck tape” on the o’l ship and hire Sherman?

@ Shaun King, you are a moron.

  59. OAR Says:

    Pete
Disagree about Dunn and Brooks. No, not the band!
Dunn had plenty left in the tank when he left. He had 3 back-to-back 1100+ rushing seasons (2004-2006) for Atlanta, after 900+ and a 600+(injury) seasons. Gruden wanted Dunn to stay in his backfield, but Dunn wanted to leave, more money, etc.
As for Brooks and a walker, you did know he had hamstring injuries to both legs that year, right?
I do agree with Sapp and Lynch, though.

  60. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @stevek
    “Duct” tape.

I’ll be honest…I would not be happy and would be made a couple days. Then I would adjust my thinking and support the team. Why? Because I’m a firm believer that we can’t turn back the clock and I don’t want to spend the next few years talking down about the Bucs.

    Question for whomever…
Rumor has it that Bill Cowher did not wish to return to coaching because he could not get Bruce Arians as OC. Now that the Steelers have forced Arians out, what are the chances that Cowher could come back now?

And if so, could the Glazers be negotiating with him in secret?

I’m not saying this is happening…just that I’m wondering if there is a chance.

  61. Pete Dutcher Says:

“would be made a couple days” = “would be mad a couple days”

  62. sandbagrudy Says:

Hey Douche get your numbers right Warrick Dunn had six effective seasons with Atlanta 5.4 yards a carry is far from aging. You should try using actual facts when passing judgement. Who are you to know when anyone’s day is done. They never even got to a point of contract negotiations with Sapp they were banking that Mcfarland was the second comming of Sapp that expreience was a total loss. So being that you feel your the one with all the solutions who repleneshed all the good players no longer in uniform.Atlanta repleneshed Vick with Ryan and Dunn with Turner. as did all the other teams in the nfc south constantly recycling the roster with replacements for aging players. I hope you continue to feel sick when confronted with the truth

  63. Pete Dutcher Says:

I know the Cowhers thing is a wet dream…but it sure would make everything fine as heck.

  64. jimmy Says:

Steve Duemig agrees with Shaun King. Duemig just said that all the ex-Bucs players hate Sherman with a passion and if he is hired the Glazers and Dominik will alienate all the ex-Bucs.

Duemig also said the Big XII players on the Bucs roster are laughing about Mike Sherman because they know how soft he is to beat.

  65. Patrick Says:

I wouldn’t be afraid of Sherman if he was the head coach, my concern is all the fans that are gonna alienate this team because of it. Are our fans really this screwed up?!?! Sherman is much better than Raheem! If we could win 10 games with him, I think we can do okay with Sherman too!

  66. jimmy Says:

“Sherman is much better than Raheem!”

Half the high school coaches in Pinellas County are better than Rah Rah.

  67. OAR Says:

    sand
You’re right! I had forgotten about Monte’s bad decision, in thinking Buggar MacFarland could take over for Sapp!

    Pete,
I disagree with your Sapp take, too!

  68. CC Says:

Sherman sux. Bring in Marty and a coordinator that can take over for him in a few years. Prob won’t happen because he will not be a yes man to our *ock star GM.

  69. sandbagrudy Says:

Hey Douche You can’t still in the wet dream phase of life I hope your not one of those sexual sadists lurking around school yards for satisfaction. This is a football thread not a playground for pedifiles save your wet dream talk for Dr Melfi on that other site you visit monitored by the Feds

  70. CannuckBuc Says:

I can’t believe the crap some of you guys are saying about the loyalty to our Bucs If they pick Sherman as coach I too will be upset but it can’t be any worse than some of the crap we lived through with Cluverhouse ownership (BO JACKSON) .Hopefully they find the right fit (Tony Dungy) or we will endure more rough seasons ahead. But to give up on my Bucs? NEVER!!!

  71. stevek Says:

You gotta be kidding me, CannuckBuc.

No more failure by our front office. It is unacceptable to hire this lame coach. Time to make a splash hire. I would love to see that $6 million

    Bring in the Chin!

Hey Douche get your numbers right Warrick Dunn had six effective seasons with Atlanta 5.4 yards a carry is far from aging.

Wow…so I disagree with you and you call me names…very mature.

Actually, if you were a fan back then, or if you had a memory, you would remember that the common consensus at the time was that Dunn’s legs were damaged and he was showing signs that his shelf-life was waring thin.

I didn’t say it was a correct assumption, pal. I know Dunn had a few years left in him, but no one knew that for certain at the time. In fact, that was why he was signed AS A BACKUP in Atlanta.

    @OAR
See the above, guy, for my response on Dunn. Most Bucs fans agreed with the move at the time. It wasn’t until Dunn showed that he had gas left in the tank that revisionist history took hold.

As to Brooks…I know he had injuries, but he was still old. I REMEMBER the announce team LAUGHING at Brooks because he looked so old out there. It was an insult.

But the proof is in the pudding…Brooks retired because even he knew it was time. He started moving on from playing into other areas of football and other projects.

    And…finally…as to Sapp…

“They never even got to a point of contract negotiations with Sapp…” – Sandybutt

This is a half truth…a contract WAS offered to Sapp. He rejected it because it was not high enough and they REFUSED to go higher. McFarlane’s name was used as a bargaining tool to try to get Sapp to cave, and later it was used to compensate for the loss of Sapp.

That’s the way it went down. Sandybutt wants to be right so he’s twisting the facts. His memory is short. He’s just mad because I called him out on a bad attitude.

I know your memory is not short OAR…think back…it was common knowledge at the time it all went down…or rather just after.

Honestly…does anyone not remember how fans were screaming to get younger? It was a catch 22 for the Glazers, Bruce Allen and Gruden. The fans wanted to get younger, but they didn’t want to lose the players who needed to be gone to make it so.

  73. McBuc Says:

Oar, in Pete’s defense…Sapp has stated that it was Monte that talked Gruden into letting him go.

Also in Pete’s defense, You guys are refering to Dunn’s first time around, he left for more money in ATL and earned every penny. The second time around he was not as effective, and I do not beleive he played for another team. He also loves his Falcons.

  74. McBuc Says:

Oh, if I remeber right, Sapp was not demanding money…Monte jsut thought it was BM time. I am sure Sapp rubbed him the wrong way one too many times, but who really knows other than Monte and Sapp.

Such a mental image makes me a little nervous, borderline queasy……………………….

Forget about Sapp, Dunn, whatever…………………..major issues right now.

  79. Pete Dutcher Says:

Small correction on myself…now that I think back…you are right that the Bucs did not make an offer to Sapp (during the first week of free agency). What you’ve forgotten is that Sapp had made it known that he wanted a contract like the one he had first signed with the Bucs…$36 million over 6-7 years.

It was too much…especially since it wasn’t felt that Sapp had 6-7 years left in him. As it turned out, even with the Raiders, Sapp had only one double digit sack year in him, and the rest of the time he never topped 5 sacks in a season. It would have been wasted money.

You started this whole crusade just think you could be getting your pee wee herman thing on with a photo of the chin but now you have to go toe to toe with me. I’m going to leave this thing alone Douche your an easy target fishing in a barrell brother.

  89. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Sherman is a NO!!! I’m wondering if we can still work it out with Kelly?? His recruiting class is not going to be happy and future classes as well with knowledge of him possibly going pro. I think we should offer him some more money and see if that works. The school is not happy and reports say they had a deal in place to promote their OC to HC. I think those circumstances alone will force him out of Oregon. And hopefully we can get him and LaMichael James. And I wouldn’t be against drafting Oregons QB Dixon in say the 4th. We don’t have a pick in that round but could easily trade there to get him. We are gonna lose JJ to FA so we need a backup and Dixon is a solid player who could come in and run a spread formation and have him mainly as a running threat, but the kid can pass as well so you would have to respect both aspects of his game!! Solid backup to Josh and possibly another QB like RG3 or Matt Flynn if we would trade Freeman!!!

  90. BigMacAttack Says:

This whole thing blows right about now. They are going to totally eff this up. Woe is we.

  91. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

I think we should unload Josh now, because if he has another year like this one. Then he will have little to no value after that. I just don’t see him getting it, if he hasn’t by now. Maybe a real QB coach could help, but I would rather have Flynn or RG3 versus JF. Thats just my opinion. But I have seen enough and would like a change. Either one of those guys would be better than Josh IMO! I’ve tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. But the terrible throws he made this season make it easy to say “let him go”!!

  92. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

And IF we sign Zimmer or Schott or both I think we will be ok. Chip Kelly would be nice too. Those are the HCs I would like. I would not like Sherman. He does have a good regular season record. But thats it. Not enough for me. Zimmer has taken a group of thugs and trash and had a top 10 D all four years he has been there. Schott also has a bad postseason record. But him and Zimmer aren’t going to be your best friend and scared to tell you no like Ra. And Kelly’s offense is nasty and it is proven the spread works in the pros. The other guys on the list are just doing “your duediligence”. IMO

  93. Pete Dutcher Says:

They told me they were interested in hiring someone who has been a head coach before and Chip is a guy who has had some experience at it. So, them talking to him doesn’t bother me at all. My interest in the job is as keen as ever.” – MARTY

I guess that rules out Clements.

  95. K2theSoldier Says:

Signing Sherman over Marty just makes zero sense to me. Absolutely zero sense.

  96. BigMacAttack Says:

I see the Chargers just gave Rich Bisaccia a bump up to Asst Head Coach / Special Teams. It’s really funny how the Bucs imploded when Rich Bisaccia left the team. I can’t believe the friggin idiots won’t even talk to the guy. It doesn’t make sense when your talking to idiots like Sherman & Chilly and won’t hardly give a guy with 35 yrs experience who is ready to be a head coach a look. Ridiculous.

  97. K2theSoldier Says:

Yeah i agree BigMac, why the Bucs aren’t giving Rich a chance is beyond me. The guy has all the qualities to be a head coach, and a damn good one.

  98. Richard Says:

No other team has been knocking down the Chargers’ door to interview Bisaccia either.

  99. Garv Says:

Totally agree about Rich Bisaccia. Apparently he has not even been considered and I find that odd…………unless it’s personal between him and Dominik or the Glazers? Maybe he left with a few words of discouragement?

Even so, swallow yer pride and interview who could be the best hire out there!

  100. Bobby Says:

    @Richard…BINGO!

  101. stevek Says:

Rich Bissachia would be a great choice.

Maybe he doesn’t have the same agent as the “Rock Star”, so it will actually require some skill in acquiring Rich’s services.

  102. Bobby Says:

@FuNkYxMuNkEy…No we don’t want Kelly (Sure…let’s offer an unproven college coach more than 6 mil a year…’rolleyes’) and No we aren’t letting Freeman go. Now you can feel free to focus on something else, like hopefully an intelligent post.

  107. Noleriff Says:

    @ JOE

…its been way to quiet, and I still think the Glazers are blowing smoke with this second interview crap. There are people within the organization that are tasked with keeping up with marketing and the wishes of the fans…..not that they always listen, but they do hear it…that being said, I seriously believe that there’s another “Splash” coming soon. This second interview BS (in my opinion) is to buy some time while they do another secret meeting, which has probably already taken place….considering that Rock Star was on the west coast at one point in the last week, there’s a name that was thrown out there a couple of weeks ago that seemingly said he wasn’t interested in coaching anymore…..then yesterday that same name backtracked a little on NFL Network and seemed to leave the door open because “not interested” became “maybe someday”. Obviously the reach for Chip Kelly says the Bucs want an offensive guy…this name is an offensive guy…..the Bucs want someone with previous HC experience……this name has HC experience…..pretty successful HC experience…..and a Super Bowl ring…..this name is not really a retread……but a very good coach who took a break for a while…..this name might actually get people excited and put a@@es in the seats….this name fits surprisingly well with the rumors of Eddie DeBartolo buying the team from the Glazers….tell me Joe…….what do you think about Steve Mariucci, hmmm??

….oh, and Thomas……don’t even bring up the Detroit gig…..Lombardi couldn’t have won with that steaming roster of crap…..

  108. sandbagrudy Says:

ohoy there ohoy who’s piloting this vessell

  109. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

It could be worse, a lot worse, then Mike Sherman.
Who can fault him for sticking up for his player ?
Would YOU get in the face of Sapp ? Not me.
Tampa has pretty much ran out of options for head coach.
Sherman is not my first choice, Marty is.
But it is looking like Sherman is coming, especially since Dom and him share the same agent.

  110. Eric Says:

Holy sh@t balls, I just threw up in my mouth. For God sakes just hire Marty and put this nightmare to bed

  111. LadyJ Says:

Really? For a few games or long term?

The wildcat worked for a number of games too, but, I wouldn’t say it was proven to work in the pros.

  113. eric Says:

the glazers dont care who the guys agent is!!!!

    thats rediculous.

  114. Pete Dutcher Says:

I’m calling it. Zimmer as Head Coach, Steve Mariucci as OC. 😛

  115. Wisconsin Bucs fan Says:

    Not Sherman! Hire Marty!

  116. MTM Says:

King is a buffoon and the latest rumor is the Glazers are looking at the head coach at St. Aquinas High School. They feel he is a real up and coming coach that can work with the youth on the Bucs.

  117. K2theSoldier Says:

Wouldn’t surprise me if it’s personal between Dom and the owners. They don’t exactly have the best impression with a stand up guy like Doug Williams either. Our front office has very few clean relationships it seems like.

  118. K2theSoldier Says:

That last comment was referring to Dom and the Glazers relationship to Rich Basaccia.

  119. stevek Says:

I believe there will be a surprise hire coming into Tampa.

We need a splash hire, and about $30 million more in payroll. Make it happen!

  120. NickinMelb Says:

If there is no splash hire and at this point I can’t imagine who they might drag out PLEASE HIRE MARTY, NO SHERMAN!!!! Glazers please listen to your fanbase there is alot of concensus here!!

  121. Thomas 2.2 Says:

    Noleriff:

I won’t criticize you for suggesting Mariucci, that isn’t foolish but I haven’t heard his name raised previously.

I see this hire from this perspective: just hire a competent and experienced coach who will bring in competent coordinators and you have improved ten fold. I will accept Sherman, Marty, Chilly, Rich B – they are all fine,

I was excited about Kelly as well. Head coaches are CEO’s that make executive decisions and direct the coordinators to implement the system and enforce direction.

We had a janitor, not a CEO. Our defense should basically be scrapped – I mean of course keep players that have potential and are under contract – but scrap the rest. Offensively, we are there if you add 3 playmakers, starting RB, #1 wr and athletic tight end.

Come on guys, get FunkyMunkey some slack….he is clearly very knowledgeable.

Matt Flynn (and his grand total of 2 career starts) and RGIII (college junior) are better than Freeman and worth trading him and starting over for. Gimme a break.

And he is obviously an expert on Oregon, spending so much time explaining their QB Dennis Dixon’s skillset….nevermind the fact that the QB is Darron Thomas, because Dixon has been in Pittsburgh for about 3 years now. All very valid points and well researched.

The general stupidity on these boards is absolutely mind blowing.

  128. Big Marlon B Says:

    *Cut Funky some slack

  129. Patrick Says:

    HAVE THEY interviewed Zimmer again?

  130. Fernando Says:

Since when Shaun King’s opinion or Warren Sapp’s feelings win games. Don’t care much for both of them, they’re both aholes anyway. The focus is get a head coach with discipline and experience. Those 2 former Bucs should stop bashing and back up whoever comes in.

  131. mainebuc Says:

First, I don’t think the bucs organization cares what Shaun King thinks. Second, we are not going to hire Mike Sherman.

  132. astrobucs Says:

sapp does not play for bucs….so hire any coach you want !never listen to shawn king he was nt very good anyway

  133. gotbbucs Says:

I’m really starting to think that nobody wants this job.
Whoever gets the job is going to have to put a patchwork staff together with whoever is left over after this week. Half the guys that have been interviewed are probably just saying thanks but no thanks by now because they know they’re behind the eight ball already. Sherman and Shottenheimer are probably the only ones willing to take this risk at this point because they just want to get back into the league.

  134. FLBoyInDallas Says:

You’ll hear a name out of left field sometime this week: Jim Tomsula. Mark it down & take it to the bank. Not sure if he’s gonna be the HC or the DC but he will be given an offer. I’m not gonna go all Apple Roof on you guys and tell how I know, but I’m 90% on this one.

  135. CC Says:

Mariucci would work well here. He also has the same agent as the *ock star. Glazers get it done.

  136. lakeland bob Says:

FLBoyInDallas-Tomsula would be an great hire.Hope your souce is right.

  137. Brad Says:

I just can’t believe the Glazers who are known for pulling a rabbit out of their hats, will settle for Sherman. I can’t believe he not only got an interview but got a second one. If we have to settle for this guy I believe it’s in direct connection with Mark Dominik being the GM. Here’s hoping they do to Mark what they did to Rich Mccay and step in and hire a real coach. Thereby cutting Dominiks power off at the knees. If we hire Sherman with Dominik being our GM we will be the laughing stock of the NFL. I can see the Glazers stepping up and hiring a dark horse otherwise it will seem a sale of the team is next.

  138. jLM Says:

Why didn’t Pete Carmichael get a look at???

  139. gotbbucs Says:

    @FLBoyInDallas

I’d give him a shot as a DC, don’t think I’d pull the trigger on him as a Head Coach just yet.

Friends and fellow Buc Fans, that is pretty badass resume to just ignore.

The guys has been successful in everything he touched. I remember listening to TJ Reaves interview Rich a couple years ago, and the guy has a great demeanor. Its no wonder his players have always fought hard for him. The guy is total stud, and you won’t even talk to him? C’mon Man!!!

So many better options are still out there..

Glazers please don’t waste any more seasons on shots in the Dark.

If you are really dead set on Sherman, bring him in as a OC for a couple years and lets see what he’s got. I just can’t see him as the HC.

  146. 941-Bucs Says:

I have a feeling it will be

    Mike Sherman – HC
    Tom Clements – OC
    Jim Tomsula – DC

Which i am actually ok with. The OC and DC make this attractive. Sherman just steers the boat. Tomsula and Clements will actually train the crew.

I’m still very much a Sapp fan. To just think he will no longer come around if Sherman is the HC is a bit unsettling. The Glazers are burning dangerous bridges. They let most of the greatest players this franchise has ever had, just walk (or get booted) out the door. Not always in a friendly kind of way.

  147. Pete Dutcher Says:

    941
Tom Clements will not be OC…he is getting that job in Green Bay.

  149. k1ngAdroc Says:

has mike sherman been interviewed for any coaching vacancy other than the bucs? i can’t find anything on any other interview for him. Hell of a Agent

  150. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I really resent that last statement from King. So if I support Sherman, I’m not a real Bucs fan? Really? I wasn’t aware that we were the Tampa Bay Sapps. I’ve poured my heart and soul into this team for as long as I can remember, not to mention a tremendous amount of money (I just paid $400 for tickets to watch Davin Joseph block at the damn pro bowl). I’ve cheered for the Yucs just as hard as I’ve cheered for the Bucs. I don’t need a bitter ex-player telling me I’m not a fan. Besides, although the hit was legal, it was still a cheap shot. It took me 10 years to admit it, but it is the truth. Anyone who disagrees doesn’t know the type of character Sapp is. I’ve played basketball with him before, and I know exactly how he is. And believe me, everyone on that Bucs team (including King) knows that too. Don’t get me wrong, he was a great player and I still respect him as one of the best Bucs of all time, but let’s just say I wouldn’t want him at my dinner table with my family.

Sherman is one of the very few people that had the balls to stand up to Sapp. If there is anything that I could pick about him that I like the most, it is that fact. If the situation was reversed, I would only hope our coach would have defended one of our players in the same way.

  151. Northend Says:

Dallas,i believe tomsula is getting some play for dc.im not sure his resume is strong enough for e top spot.but who knows.hes only 43 so fits our demo.

  152. Niko (The Optimist) Says:

I think its pretty obvious that the people on here who make fun of Shaun King simply were not Bucs fans back when he was our QB. Most were not even fans of the Bucs when the Sapp/Sherman incident took place, you can tell, or they would know more about its relevance.

So I agree with Shaun King, but its not only Sapp your going to piss off. Mike Alstott, Derrick Brooks, Simeon Rice (ok maybe I’m pushing it with Leaping Rice), John Lynch, you risk the ire of all of those Bucs players who defended Sapp when it happened.
You can read about the incident here http://www.bucpower.com/1102sapp.html

At the time, the Bucs and Packers both were tied with the Best record in football at the time. The Bucs won 21-7 in a close heated battle.

  153. Phil Says:

I don’t think the Glazers have any idea of the backlash they will create if they hire Sherman. They think the stands are empty with Raheem wait till they see how empty they are with Sherman.

  154. Apollo1111 Says:

I think it’s been a decade since this mattered and if either one is being stupid then up theirs. If the dude can fix the team I say let him.

  155. Garv Says:

    Niko

I was at that game. I think Warren did what he was taught to do. Brian Kelly had just intercepted the ball and was in the process of returning it for a TD, a HUGE play.

Mike Sherman stood up for his player who was seriously hurt. I commend him for that actually. I think Shaun King’s comments are stupid, irrelevant, desperate, immature and totally asinine. Clear enough? The idiot Shaun King just made a total fool out of himself with those comments and if you think that makes me less of a Buccaneer fan for saying so you are just as foolish as he is.

That typed, I’m still hoping for an alternative for our new HC. But if it’s Mile Sherman I’m going to support him and the Buccaneers with the same enthusiasm I have always had for them. and with season ticket money as well.

  156. Wade Says:

[That’s a bit much isn’t it Wade? — Joe] is following a template so that he can be considered the next Stephen A. Smiff. This is done by talking very loudly and using the reverence of a preacher. His “points” lack substance.

  157. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Niko,

I take a little offense to that too. I was absolutely a Buc fan at that time. I was watching that game too. I defended Sapp too, but only for that reason. Of course the hit was legal, that’s not even debatable. However, it was still a cheap shot. In that article you linked, Terry Bradshaw and Jimmy Johnson both agreed it was a cheap shot. Just because I don’t defend a cheap shot doesn’t mean I’m not a fan. I don’t care if every single player on the Bucs defended it, it doesn’t change reality. Just as Sherman is supposed to defend his player, the players on our team are supposed to defend their guy. That’s the way it works in sports. Imagine if they bashed him, how terrible would that have been for our team chemistry. Hell even that cheap shot by the Panthers gunner was downplayed by his teammates, and that was an illegal cheap shot. For you to not know or understand how it works is quite alarming.

Clifton had about as much of a shot to make that tackle as I did. Sapp lined him up and took him out. You are an idiot if you think Sapp really thought Clifton was going to make that tackle. He knew he had an opportunity to put him to sleep and he took it. It’s no different than during a kickoff having our biggest player go straight for the kicker and take him out as a possible defender. There’s no rule against it, but it’s not the way it’s supposed to be done.

To say I’m not a fan for disagreeing with that him pisses me off to a level I can’t explain in words. You are 100% wrong. How about I say you are not a fan if you don’t defend Aqib Talib and believe in everything he does. So just because Sapp is one of the all-time greats, I have to defend him no matter what he does? Give me a break with that, what a bunch of bologna. That concept is too stupid for words, and I’m shocked that someone (Niko) that I respect so much could make such an asinine statement.
