Dick Vitale Outraged By Mike Sherman Talks

January 9th, 2012

"Mike Sherman? Why, bay-BEE?"

This is what it has come to for the Bucs. It isn’t just that Team Glazer and Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik are being scoffed at by local talking heads over the known interviewees to replace jettisoned Bucs coach Raheem Morris. It is now national scorn.

First it was Deadspin, then it was PTI mocking if not laughing at who the Bucs are looking at for their new head coach. Well now, Dick Vitale has piled on.

The ESPN college basketball icon and Tampa Bay area resident took to Twitter to lambaste the talk of Mike Sherman being one of the leading candidates as the next Bucs coach.

@DickieV: BUCS may hire Mike Sherman. y is he on their radar? They say offensive genius.25-25 @Tex A&M fired by Green Bay that doesn’t = GENIUS!

Later, Vitale used Twitter to please with almost-Bucs coach Steve Mariucci to leave the NFL Network desk to run the Bucs.

@DickieV: @SteveMariucci Comeback to coaching – my BUCS NEED U! U can always get back into tv.

Joe will have more on “Mooch” tomorrow. He recently was in St. Petersburg and was kind enough to talk to Joe about the Bucs.

Finally big dogs are speaking out against the hiring of Sherman.

Duemig would puke in him mouth, and Dicky V…..Sherman Genius not close.

I would really like Billick, but Mooch is an interesting idea, particularly how he was the talk of the town about a decade ago.

  2. mark2001 Says:

Dicky V. knows coaching…I’ll take his judgment.

    Billick or Mooch….come on down.

Funny as Mooch was the talk of the town about a decade ago.

  3. raphael Says:

Mooch didn’t do much in detroit…….marty is the best choice.. imo

  4. Miracle Says:

Maybe everyone already knew this but I’m just impressed that Vitale is a Bucs fan. We’re not usually the celebrity choice.

  5. A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

Good lord…too much faith is being put in the words of an NFL guy who NEVER breaks stories.

Sherman is NOT going to be our coach!

And I hate to break it to people, but it won’t be Billick either. Or Marty. Or Martz. Or Mularkey (sp).

We won’t see who it is until next week…because the guys we’re getting is in the playoffs.

  6. Fear The Glow Says:

I’ve run into Dicky V a few times in Sarasota and he is a genuinely good guy. I saw him speaking to a group of military personnel and at the end of the talk he said “…and don’t thank me for being here. I want to thank you for that.” Earned so much of my respect with that.

Marty Schottenheimer is looking more appealing by the minute.

God this year sucks for coaching candidates.

  7. k1ngAdroc Says:

    slumped shoulders ((head in hands))

  8. BucsfaninMi Says:

Mooch is a good college coach. He got the 49ers on the tail end of their legacy, rode that as long as possible, then did jack squat in Det.

  9. ClayBURN94 Says:

@A REAL bucs fan So your saying Wade Phillips?

  10. eric Says:

    Weirdest coaching search I’ve seen.

    Some incomprehensible candidates.

Interviewing coordinators before finalizing head coach.

If they get Marty might work but everybody else is a disaster.

  11. Architek Says:

Mooch stay away and keep your credibility. The Bucs don’t deserve you. This is the North Korea of professional sports.

  12. NJBucsFan Says:

    Perry fewell

  13. eric Says:

I remember when hugh took the podium with a a copy of parcels. contract. Then he said he had newfound empathy for brides left at alter

Having a similar flare of strangeness

  14. knucknbuc Says:

Like Ive been saying since Mike Sherman was said to be in the running for a job as hc. If we hire this a$$clown we will be the laughing stock of the league. Bank on it. Even a college basketball commentator knows that this dude is a moron and a sad excuse for a coach.

  15. CC Says:

This franchise has come full circle. Once again we are the laughing stock of the NFL.

  16. mark2001 Says:

Mooch didn’t do much in Detroit. Marinelli didn’t do much in Detroit.

Ever think that they have had a stinking, lousy management group for the last 15 or 20 years? That is why people talk about a coach’s success, they better darn well consider the orginization. Wonder why it looks like Rah might get a good job elsewhere and Fisher wouldn’t come here? Our organization has such a reputation around the league as a big part of the problem here right now.

  17. eric Says:

When you refer to not hiring an a$$clown it doesn’t narrow it down much with these candidates.

Must have visited a$$clowns r us.

    Except marti

  18. Brown Bags Have Been Removed Says:

Thread Hi-Jack warning: Anoyne else think this Mathieu #7 from LSU tonight looks like a young Ronde Barber?

  19. Brown Bags Have Been Removed Says:

Cowboys dumped dave Campo. Hey, he’s old and been fire multiple times by other non-playoff teams. We need an interview, STAT!

  20. Hillbilly Heaven Says:

BB – Ronde never looked as #7

  21. Hillbilly Heaven Says:

    ….as good as

  22. TheProsUseAdvoCare Says:

Anyone remember when Vitale was relevant?…… Didn’t think so.

  23. BucFan813 Says:

google Marty Schottenheimer…Wikipedia says we hire him tomorrow..lol…http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marty_Schottenheimer

  24. eric Says:

Sam rutigliano lives in spring hill.

  25. Mainebuc Says:

    DICKIE V WANTS SCHOTTY BABY!!!

  26. Northend Says:

honeybadger got something special.upshaw also playing well

  27. David Says:

I’d take les miles with some nfl coordinators.

  28. Patrick Says:

We need to interview Russ Grimm. The fact that the Steelers interviewed him years ago for the head coaching job says something about him.

We need to interview Grimm, Zimmer, and Billick.

  29. Patrick Says:

Marty, Grimm, Zimmer, and Billick are the four best candidates.

Sherman is ok, but he’s nothing great and the fans will NOT be happy if he comes here. I’d be afraid to see the reaction from the fans if Sherman is hired.

  30. 941-Bucs Says:

Dick V, Stays in Sarasota? really? i’ve never seen him, or maybe just never noticed.

  31. 941-Bucs Says:

Maybe we will double dip in this draft as well.

    Claiborne in the 1st and
Honey Badger Mathieu in the second

/drool… that’s about all i could say about that dream draft. Only con is how bad we need LBers! By the end of the second round all the really good ones will be gone.

  32. K2theSoldier Says:

Sounds like Pete is insinuating Wade Phillips will be getting the job……………………………………………………………….I’d love to know who your sources are Pete -___________-

  33. NickinMelb Says:

Joe I have always been skeptical about the Glazers desire to win with money not being an obstacle. I am with you that this team has talent but I am starting to abandon the thought that the Glazers are dedicated to winning. If the Glazers had called Jeff Fisher and told him money was not an option and they would do what it took to win I think they had him. Instead once again they are going with cheapest options. All of the coaches they have talked to or will talk to will come on the cheap just as Mark Dominik and Raheem Morris did. This is getting nauseating. The Glazers tell the fans they will prove that they will spend money but they do nothing to change fans opinions.

  34. NickinMelb Says:

Mike Sherman does nothing for the Bucs. Hopefully he is alot more of a field general than he has shown in past NFL seasons.

  35. K2theSoldier Says:

The two things that will push me off the Skyway bridge:
    Hiring Sherman
    Hiring Wade

  36. TPCMatt Says:

    u have room 4 one more K2?

  37. TheProsUseAdvoCare Says:

@K2 We both know Pete is going to say whatever happens is exactly what his “source” told him.

  38. Big Marlon B Says:

Honey badger is only a soph, he’s not draft eligible til next year

  39. Joe Says:

    941:

Honey Badger Mathieu in the second

Honey Badger is a sophomore and if he were eligible for the draft, there’s no way he would last to the second round.

  40. Erick Says:

Mathieu cannot be drafted because he is only a Sophomore.

    Bucs need to hire Bisaccia.

  41. 941-Bucs Says:

Thanks Joe. I am not a huge College fan, but was paying attention to the bowl series this year for spots of what the Bucs might get.

@ Erik I fully agree, Go get Bisaccia=:)

  42. 941-Bucs Says:

Man all i can say is i hope The Vikings try to reunite Ponder with Blackmon allowing Claiborne to fall to us.

  43. Patrick Says:

The only thing that would concern me about making Marty the HC is that he would bring his son in as the OC. And then if he sucks here like he did in NY, his daddy won’t fire him. That would be bad.

Let’s pray the Rams, Dolphins, or Jaguars hire Brian S. so we don’t have to worry about that.

Also, make sure Marty’s health is good. Don’t want him to die in office, he’s kind of old.

  44. TheProsUseAdvoCare Says:

Honestly: Could Raheem and Olsen be any worse than Marty and “Sharty”?

    I’m joining you!

  46. White Tiger Says:

Gotta go with DickieV on this one…please NOT Sherman…!

Like I’ve been saying, I’m good with Schottie..

Anyone suggest Cam Cameron yet? He’s kinda busy in the playoffs for at least another week…?

  47. Fear The Glow Says:

    @941-Bucs

He has a “permanent” room at the Ritz in Sarasota as far as I know.

I do know for a fact that he is in Sarasota a lot! I’ve bumped into him multiple times around town and im definitely not some kind of super stalker that roams around trying to find dick….I mean a guy named Dick!!!!

  48. Patrick Says:

@White Tiger……..Cam Cameron=sh!tiest head coach in NFL history. Far worse than Rod Marinelli. That Dolphins team was lucky it got that overtime win against the Ravens.

I know you’re kidding though haha.

  49. K2theSoldier Says:

Regarding Marty’s son Brian, I’ve read so many complaints about his playcalling with the Jets, but I can’t help but think 2 things; He’s got one of the worst starting QB’s in the league to work with in Sanchez and he’s doing it in New York where the media makes everybody either suck really bad or be the greatest thing ever.

  50. BucFan South Tampa Says:

    All coaches have been fired
