Shaun King’s Defense Of Raheem Morris

December 9th, 2011

When a Bucs team comes off a double-digit win season and implodes the next season, and is ill-disciplined, ill-prepared and the coach displayed an interesting choice of a very public scorn of a player when some believe the coach keeps certain players immune from discipline, it is understandable how fans can be irate at said coach.

When the same team tailspins so awfully that it may be in contention for a top-five draft pick and is now in last place after getting curb-stomped at home by a rookie quarterback, these same fans are likely to be loudly beating the drum for a new coach.

Don’t count Shaun King among them.

King, one of only three quarterbacks to lead the Bucs to an NFL championship game, co-hosts the too-Jewish sounding “King David Show” with Toby David on WQYK-AM 1010. He went on an impassioned, factual defense for Morris and suggested the problem with the Bucs is not the coach, but the Bucs front office.

In short, King finds it hypocritical that fans within months of lauding Morris as NFL Coach of the Year now want to run him out of town on the first departing bus.

I don’t want him out of town yet, but I completely agree with Joe’s assessment to bring in a outside analyst to work with the team for a week and see what could be improved as far as coaching, practice, and routine. And I am certainly on board with bringing in a DC.

  2. Buc You Raheem Says:

    Raheem Morris = Fan Apathy

Get it Shaun replaced by Brad Johnson King? You sucked as a player too.

Wanna go back and compare your 100 yd passing game stats?

The defense deep down hates you because you wasted good opportunity with that high school offense you failed to run… as quoted by Warren Sapp himself.

  3. Joe Says:

    Buc You Raheem:

What were Sean Payton’s NFL numbers by chance?

What does that matter? Same as what Shaun King did on the field matters to the subject at hand. Not one damned thing.

Oh, BTW, Payton was a horrible NFL quarterback. But Joe has yet to hear anyone say he doesn’t know football.

  4. Nick2 Says:

Joe Shawn does nothing but defend Raheem who basically has no defense. He says this team is completely void of talent which I totally disagree with. He lays ALL of the blame pretty much on Mark Dominick who in my opinion if just a puppet for the Glazers to put the team together on the cheap. I think that any competent NFL coach would do better than this disorganized disaster that sucks up to certain veteran and uses rookies as examples when the real problem is that these prima donnas have no accountablity. I was shocked that Winslow got away with the personal fouls, dropped passes, offensive pass interferences and chastising of Freeman. THEN Raheem jumps all over Brian Price. This coach is a joke. Shawn King has no clue.

  5. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Sean an rah rah are buddies.

Joe, you mean king blames our “rock star” gm? The one who gave Clayon, Crowell, Nugent, Mccown, Leftwich, Derrick Ward, Quincy Black and Gerald Mccoy contracts that exceeded 100 million in less than 3 years.

Now, since many of them were so bad that they were cut making the team responsible for less than all of the contract – but add up the money paid to those players (approx 50 million) and then decide how much value the team got for it. Rock star? More like bad karaoke guy.

  6. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Joe, dont compare rah rah to Payton.

Payton is a star and has never had a team look nearly as bad as these Yucks for 80% of rah rah’s tenure.

Rah rah has fielded the worst coached NFL team in memory. Nobody has any confidence left, especially the players.

They know their coach is done, they want him and the cake-walk to coninue, yet they cant deliver a good performance – that means they arent capable.

  7. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Dominik is really good with the draft, but his free agency has been less than stellar to say the least. If Dominik made most of those calls that 2.2 referred to above then his job should be evaluated along with Raheem’s, but if it was Raheem that stood on the table for most of those guys then it’s even more evidence that he should be fired immediately when the season ends, with Dominik keeping his job. Either way dramatic changes are necessary if this team is ever going to compete for anything at all.

  8. Larry Says:

I’m with Shawn on this issue. First they hate you. Then they love you. Now they hate you all over again. Buc fans love riding the emotional roller coaster.

  9. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Larry, you’re just plain wrong. It’s Shaun King & fans like yourself who are making emotional responses to the issue of Raheem Morris. Whether or not someone “loves” or “hates” someone is a completely emotional perspective and should have no place in football. It’s irrelevant.

The ONLY issue is Raheem’s performance as a head coach. Not just his win/loss record but also how his defensive coordinator skills are objectively evaluated. In addition, how does his team respond to him? Are they disciplined? Improving, or regressing? Playing to their current talent level, or greatly underachieving?

Those are the issues. Not whether someone first hates, then loves, then hates again. Who gives a damn about that? What we want is good football. Period. The rest is totally without merit.

  10. below me Says:

there is plenty of blame to go around, but this team just doesn’t look ready to play on Sundays. I’ve always been told that comes back to coaching.

  11. OAR Says:

Well, how do! I was reconing all the scuttlebutt bout ole’ Shaun King being a cowboy were false? Yee haw!

  12. eric Says:

Ive been trying to run him out of town since 09…………………

  13. bucyea Says:

if Morris were white, would king be singin the same tune? Sorry, but its reality, IMO.

  14. eric Says:

Well I guess if King had head coached a Super Bowl winner id give his opinions more weight.

Payton has proven he knows a ton, where King – not so much.

    unless mouth jawing is proof.

  15. AtlBucsFan Says:

I just want Raheem to be the leader his position demands. If he continues his current relationship with the players while allowing sloppy undisciplined play on the field his job security should be questioned. These players all need leadership which includes demanding excellence and implementing consequences for not achieving excellence. Furthermore, since no one player has come forward (outwardly at least) to take responsibility for the players performance and set expectation, aka a leader, then Raheem needs to talk to the most respected players and seek help in providing that leadership… my 2 cents.

  16. Leighroy Says:

I like Raheem as a motivator and think he showed last year, that he has the ability to lead this young team, as a young guy himself.

What I question the most is the intelligence of our coordinating on both sides of the ball. Mike Tomlin never played in the NFL, and Jason Garret was a career backup, but both are successful, bc they have intelligent DC’s behind them generating the gameplan.

In post game interviews, I have never heard Raheem state his gameplan was anything other than the Kanye West harder faster stronger mantra.

Hey, that’s fine as a HC, but as a coordinator you need to be smarter and be able to create matchup problems and make tactical adjustments, and I have yet to see Olsen or Raheem show that as coordinators.

Bringing in someone or anyone new is not just going to help this football team. Bringing in someone who can actually outsmart and outcoach an opposing offense or defense sides of the ball is however exactly what this team needs.

  17. Adam Says:

I think it has become obvious that last season’s success was pretty much the product of a weak schedule. The same maddening decisions that happen this year, happened last year, but were more successful due to the lack of talent they played against. The good teams (Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Atlanta) stomped the Bucs. Shaun needs to remember that he ate himself out of the starting QB job when he was in Tampa.

  18. Brad Says:

@bucyea… Agree with 100%. Shaun King also guaranteed the Bucs wouldnt resign Blount. I think King says anything outlandish to get ratings. Let’s face it when people get po’d it generates more listener interaction.
I do agree Dominic deserves the majority of the blame. But the way this team is prepared and playing goes to the coach. I’d fire the whole lot of em.
If Dominic was a rock star, he’d hire Derrick Brooks immediately, fire Olson and tell the fans his planned has failed miserably and he will be looking for FA’s wherever needed.

  19. Sgt Mike Says:

I didn’t like the Raheem promo to HC from the beginning. We barely knew at that time if he was even going to be able to handle the DC job under Gruden. Unfortunately we have all suffered through this experiment in cheapness that the Glazers have given us. We need a HC that is either somewhat proven as a HC or at least one that has proven that they are at least a quality DC/OC prior to getting the job. As always I’m leary of getting a HC from the collegiate level unless you know they are running a pro style system. see Spurrier. Hate to see our Bucco’s lose but if that’s what it takes to roll this experiment out of town than so be it.

  20. McBuc Says:

I find it funny how many of you do not like what King is saying so you attck his carreer, yet many of you praise Jeff Carlson after his QB Blast post. Jeff has a great column, but I would say King accomplished more as an NFL QB. Also, King may not have been the greatest QB to garce the grid iron, but most of you praise Steve White for his great defensive break downs, which many are. Steve was not the greatest lineman to strap on shoulder pads. It does not take a great player to make comments, just like each of you make on a daily basis, yeah, King did not turn out the way we hoped, but as far as I know known of you played a single down in the NFL…but you still get to voice your opinion. Oh, and I am not a fan of King’s show, but he does make some good points in this rant.

  21. McBuc Says:

    LOL…none of you…not known of you…

  22. BigMacAttack Says:

I pretty much agree with King, and I’m standing behind our Head Coach for as long as he’s here. I don’t think he loses his job after the season, but the plan needs some refinement, and we do need more firepower with free agents, draft picks, new OC, and a new DC. I think Dom needs to get Blount and JJ under contract ASAP and I like that Raheem is starting to evaluate players like Madu, A. Black, and a few others. They finally put Demar Dotson back in last week for a play, but I’d like to see them make him an official TE and throw him the ball. The Defensive line continues to gel and improve each week. I think in time Foster will be a very good LB, but LB is my first pick in the draft, and probably second pick as well, same as last couple years. 2 DTs, then 2 DEs and now 2 LBs. I’d love to see them draft a number 1 WR like Blackmon from Oklahoma State, but how many drafts does it take to build a defense? It looks like a never ending process.

  23. BigMacAttack Says:

I could also go for DeSean Jackson who isn’t happy in Phili. I think he’d be happy with this clan, and you know Freeman can chunk it 70 yds and Jackson has the speed to get there. Having that kind of speed would totally open up the passing game.

I wanted Nnamdi, would have liked to get Reggie Bush, but haven’t complained to loud about the lack of FA’s. I do applaud many of you that have ranted about the lack of FA’s. I think that is the difference in this team being a winner and now a loser, and (other than idiot Olson) that the lack of FA signings has hurt the team the most, not Coach Morris.
