McCoy’s A Broiling, Hands-On Leader

June 28th, 2011

Joe is sweating his ass off at the Bucs players minicamp in Bradenton. Loving it, but feeling the heat nonetheless.

It seems Gerald McCoy is feeling the same way shouting to Joe, “San Diego heat’s nothing like this. This is intense. I’m telling ya.” Then, McCoy demanded Joe take rip off his Nebraska t-shirt, “Hey man take that shirt off. They are sellouts. They left the Big 12,” McCoy said.

Fun stuff aside, McCoy stands out here as a hands-on leader.

The Bucs are broken up over two fields by position. Each area has a position coach supplied by the IMG football academy. But the D-line coach here is more like window dressing. It’s McCoy who is running drills and constantly bouncing up to coach guys, position them and work with them on their hands and bark out encouragement as they work with dummies.

Across the way, Joe also sees wide receivers are doing drills running through dummies and cathing passes — not yet from Josh Freeman.

McCoy’s leadership interest really stands out.

Love what I’m reading about GMC and the overall turnout today. Gotta love these young leaders!

Pewter Report is tweeting live updates as well, this is good stuff, keep it comming Joe! Good to hear McCoy has really changed his body, hes developed a massive upper body to go with his huge lower body and narrowing his waist, I cant wait to see him in action when the pads go on

inb4 Thomas2.2 complains that McCoy is coaching.

  4. Cannon Says:

Man, what drives these guys to wear black out on the practice field?

  5. Traew Says:

How was McCoy able to build his upper body recovering from a torn bicep? Seems like that would have severelt limited his upper body strength training.

Don’t know how he did it, but they guy is looking stronger and faster. Could be scary.

Training camp if it happens could be a rude awakening to many players who have lost their tolerance to Florida Summer Heat ..

The loss of OTAs will turn training into more of an OTA

Talking a good game and playing one are 2 vastly different things. Gmc thinks he is a leader bc of his draft position-solely.

I dont dispute that he has a pro bowl mouth and opinion of himself, so far his play has not matched the hype.

I think he should learn to play before trying to lead others. Clay born is probably thinking – what have you done? Based on games played – we are both rookies still.

Thomas, you are so predictable, it’s boring. You used to be able to get me all worked up with your hate. However, after hearing you say the same things over and over again for what seems like years now, that feeling is completely gone. Nothing you say bothers me anymore (in fact I usually just skip right over your posts), because I already know what you are going to say. It’s pretty sad when you can’t even be an effective arse hole anymore. But such is your life I guess.

Thomas, Baaaaaahhhhhhhh, baaaaaahhhhhhh, baaaaaahhhhh thats the sound of the sheep laughing at you after McCoy has a break out season.

PS I notice you haven’t mentioned any actual technique issues with McCoy’s game, oh yeah thats because you don’t know anything about football. Shut up.

  12. Thomas 2.2 Says:

    Well freeman4president:

By saying that he will have a breakout season in 2011 you are agreeing that he didnt breakout in 2010 – so thanks for conceding that point.

As for technique, if you think his technique is good but he still put up those putrid 2010 numbers, then he has major deficiencies elsewhere- that we also agree on. He is very weak for a man his size and in comparison to the o lineman he faced. Some have joked that gmc stands for “gets manhandled continuously.” I hope he “breaksout” or someone blew 40million.
As for hawaiian: if i and my comments am irrelevant to you try not responding bc I believe that my comments are spot on when someone addresses me personally.

McCoy didn’t play upto number 3 overall last season. The last three or four weeks he certainly showed what he is capable of. He does look pretty jacked compared to last year though, I think he’s going to be a legit pro bowler for years. Just think if McCoy can get Clayborn all torn up like that rushing off the edge with Bowers and Price oh god our Dline is so sick!

  14. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Thanks for being fairly reasonable free. I hope mccoy has a great season, just dont think he will, it is well known that i did not like him out of ou.

Clay seems tough, but like mccoy lacked statistical production in his last college season – which is concerning. I like price but dont know about his health, same for Bowers. Speaking to someone whose opinion i value re the bucs o line: Huge upside and Huge Downside. Who wins? The likelihood – mccoy is okay but never lives up to 3 overall. Bowers or clay pans out. Price – too much unknown to project.

Ask yourself this: Was dungy a good talent evaluator? Who of: regan upshaw, marcus jones, booger macfarland panned out? I would argue none. To expect all 4 of these guys to be successful is unrealistic, especially after gmc’s season. Btw- this last 4 game argument fails when you look up the second crucial falcon game. Zero official stats despite playing the whole game.

  15. gotbbucs Says:

mccoy’s stats will improve as soon as we have some de’s that are consistently capable of forcing qb’s up into the pocket. also, look at how many passing downs were wasted with that god awful 3-man front. mccoy’s the first to admit that he had a down year
