Morning Cup Of Joe

May 25th, 2011

Bucs news forthcoming.

When Joe read this he stood and applauded. Bravo! [Deadspin]

Why won’t skunk Brandon Marshall cooperate with authorities? Joe’s so glad the Bucs didn’t get him. [Sun-Sentinel]

Wild that Knowshon Moreno is going to be situational player. [Denver Post]

So NFL hatchetman Roger Goodell has overseen more decay of the game we love, greasing the wheels so that a defensive player cannot use his legs to get proper leverage to make a tackle. How is it defensive players’ feet can’t leave the ground but it’s OK for offensive players? Disgusting. [Sports Business Journal]

Chaos! Over 200 Alabama citizens protest proposed ban on single-wide trailers. [AL]

    Lucky rock.

I still love Berman doing Alstott highlights. I guess that makes him a better beatboxer than sportscaster/analyst.

Joe can u please explain this proposed rule change to me? i’m a little unclear on what it actually is

    @ Big Marlon

It means no more “launching”… know those hits that everybody loves (including the league who promotes them in commercials) where the Safety “leaves his feet” to make a bone crunching hit?

That will now be a 15 yard penalty and a fine

  5. Chris FWC :) Says:

Yeah I bet the league still comes out with those Dvds with D players leaving their feet making “bone crunching hits.”

What they should do is reteach players not to tackle with their heads. I’m so sick and tired of bad tackling in the league. Players need to learn how to form tackle.

Remove the facemask and or helmet and the problem would be solved.

    Big Marlon B:

Players can’t “launch” or allow their feet to leave the ground against a “defenseless” player. Multiple fines will result in draft picks being taken away from a team.

    Flag football man.

  8. OAR Says:

I agree! It’s not about removing the hard hits, it’s about how to make a proper hard hit/tackle!

    @ OAR

It’s more a case of them trying to cover their asses legally in case the next player to suffer a devastating injury decides to sue.

If they were serious about head/neck injuries they’d be cracking down on the RB’s that use their helmets as a weapon (Adrian Peterson) just as much as the defensive players

  10. Espo Says:

Is this a rule change? I thought they went sissy with this last year?

  11. Joe Says:

New/stricter rules were changed by the competition committee earlier this week at the owners meetings in Indy.

  12. OAR Says:

Only difference is Adrian knows he’s doing it. In other words, he’s not defenseless, right? It’s the RBs choice to cause that injury to himself, correct? Ask Mike Alstott. He would have had a few more years left in him, unfortunately, his style of running dictated his injury.
I know and totally understand, its a tough physical sport(“that’s why girls don’t play the game coach”, but you can tackle/hit someone correctly below the head and neck.

    Thanks Joe
