Shaun King Won’t Watch Gruden’s QB Camp

April 18th, 2011

"Man, I love these kids, but I'm not running fuc*n Romper Room. If you think I'm fuc*n going to try to win a football game again with some green dude, you've lost your mind. Just get me Griese, Muir, Bisaccia and some talent on that O-line and I'll win you 9 games every damn year."

When Chucky’s now famous BSPN special with soon-to-be-drafted NFL quaterbacks returns for its second season Thursday night, one former Jon Gruden quarterback won’t be watching. That would be Shaun King.

Speaking as co-host of The King David Show on WQYK-AM 1010 today, King said Chucky is excellent at breaking down film and has been a successful head coach but the entire premise of the ESPN QB special is garbage.

“I won’t watch it. I disagree with the premise of the show. The premise is that Gruden is some kind of quarterbacks guru and that having him as a destination for a rookie QB is the ideal situation for a rookie and that just hasn’t proven to the case,” said King, who played two seasons under the Chucky regime in Tampa.

King’s point can’t be argued. Chucky has no success record with young quarterbacks, though that surely doesn’t take away from the entertaininment value of the special. Great Xs and Os and squirming draft hopefuls is a stellar mix.

Joe wonders whether Marques Tuiasosopo, Bruce Gradkowski, Josh Johnson, Luke McCown and Chris Simms will grab a bag of popcorn and tune in.

  1. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Rich gannon became a league mvp under his direction, brad johnson, jeff garcia, brian griese and for a short time chris simms played at a high level.

Gruden prefers vets and has little patience for rookie qbs but to say that qbs have a bad record under him is not true. In 02 he led both teams to the super bowl with gannon and brad johnson as qbs.

Shaun king just sucked, even under dungy and manning for a preseason.

“Young” quarterbacks. Joe specified that in his post.

“In 02 he led both teams to the super bowl with gannon and brad johnson as qbs.” – Thomas 2.2

Are you slow? Kind of hard for Gruden to lead two teams to the same super bowl, no?

By the way, you completely reiterated King’s point and then criticized him, as some ode to Chucky. You must have really poor reading comprehension skills.

  4. Dave Says:

    THOMAS… seriously?

Other than Gannon, none fo them played “at a high level” They simply dumped the ball in 2 seconds to the flat 65% of the time.

I liked Gruden, but think he is VASTLY over rated. I think he is entertaining and is a great X & 0 guy, but not a great HC.

I like the show and disagree with King in saying “The premise is that Gruden is some kind of quarterbacks guru and that having him as a destination for a rookie QB is the ideal situation for a rookie ….”

I don’t see that as the premise at all. I think the premise is to have an entertaining TV product by sticking a vocal ex-coach in the room with the rookies.
BUT, be clear here, gruden HAS NEVER been good with a rookie QB or even a guy in his 3rd year.
He liked vets that can manage a game and do nothing more.

I would like the show to stop focussing on the QB and add in some LBs, RB,s WRs, DEs etc…

  5. Chris FWC :) Says:

I started laughin soon as my eyes read the word ‘SIMMS’, 2.2.

Gru is a wannabe jock. He lives through others because they can do what Gru could never do.

I’m sooooo glad he is gone. Gru is a poser.

  6. The D Says:

Gruden is awesome with QBs considering we had God knows how many of them under him.

  7. RastaMon Says:

Hey ….SK ! could not cut it in the NFL……
    or he would have
    simple…
if only Bert had cradled “that ball”

  8. K1ngAdroc Says:

It’s fun watchin Gruden scare these kids! I love hearing him off camera yelling “are you frickin kidding me???? Who did you just say your hot read was????” Welcome to the NFL boys…. These kids should be hungry to learn and begging for face time with a successful coach or player.

I wouldn’t trade Rah for Gruden in a Million yrs. IMO – The Bucs are missing key personnel due to the Gruden “Trade”, then consequently Gruden Trades and thus Gruden drafts….

Bring on Free and the young guns, but thanks for the trophy tho!

  9. Snook Says:

I just hope Gruden gets another HC job sometime soon. It’ll be fun to watch him finally get exposed as the offensive fraud that he is.

I feel sorry for the team that he’ll be drafting for.

  10. gotbbucs Says:

after watching espn’s draft coverage last year it’s no wonder he suckep at drafting. he thought every player selected was a pro bowler. his voice now makes me sick to my stomach.

  11. Weneeddefense Says:

Cant wait for Raheem to win us a Super Bowl!

No seriously, I cant wait that long.

  12. Joe Says:

Two words my friend. NFL Network.

  13. jlynch Says:

Shaun King was a poser at QB. He hasnt had as much sucsess as a player as Gruden has coaching. [Now, now jlynch. No need to go off the deep end and wishing someone dies. — Joe]

  14. espo Says:

Dave did you say that Rich Gannon was the only Gruden QB to play at a high level? Brad Johnson helped win us a superbowl!!!

I don’t think its fair to include Chris Simms in that mix. He was getting there. He left his spleen on the field for US. That makes him ok in my book.

  15. OAR Says:

Like I give a rat’s a$$, what Shaun King is going to watch/listen to or not!
What a bunch of whinners! Or maybe it’s cause Gruden is taller than you? Or maybe, Gruden yelled at you too much? Maybe both, not sure?
What’s really sad is, you’ve got a ring and Dan Marino doesn’t!

  16. below me Says:

4 words…Shaun King is fat. best argument ever! But seriously, he really is fat.

  17. bucyea Says:

Snook nailed it!!! Gruden, cannot develop a young Qb, he doesn’t have the patience, and he wants to win NOW instead of building a long-term winner. Gruden/Allen drafts were HORRIFIC!!! Like the had no interest in developing young players, and did very little research. Morris/dominik will turn this team into a long-term winner, something Gruden never has and never will. Gru/Allen spent a fortune on BAD FA signings with the only intention of winning one year and looking for the next “Dungy” built team to take to the SB, then its all downhill.

  18. bucyea Says:

and to OAR…King was one of the most prolific passers in college history. One his first playoff game as a rookie, then enter Gruden.
How would the Farve deal have worked out? We have the best young QB in the league under 23…we have one hell of a bright future, but most Bucs fans don’t have the intelligence to understand this. In fact many Buc fans weren’t Buc fans, they were Gruden fans. Worst sports fans in the country…please understand, not all of them, but with the HORRIFIC sports media(rags)and unfortunately we have a bunch of “pied piper” followers, that cant seem to form their own opinions based on facts.

  19. OAR Says:

    Bucyea
Blah, blah, blah! Yeah, I know all of the reasonings, bad drafts with Allen, Kiffin leaving, even “he’s a scumbag”, etc. All old news! He’s gone and I’M STILL A FAN OF MY BUCS!
As for “King was one of the most prolific passers in college history” One key word there, COLLEGE!
BTW You’re not saying, Gruden killed King’s career are you??? Brad Johnson threw, in one year, as many TD’s as Shaun “the prolific COLLEGE passer” King had his whole career! Give me a break!
As for the other QB’s we had under Gruden, they seemed to not have been developed by ANYONE! Maybe those QB’s couldn’t be developed? Nobody thinks that? Just Gruden couldn’t develop them, must be his fault! Pfft!

  20. Mr. Football Says:

If Gruden is such a Guru to you people answer me one question. How come he screwed up Randall Cunningham trying to impose his offense on Randall. Then ended having Randall shipped to Minnesota were he killed? HMMM something to think about.

  21. Joe Says:

Wow. Denny Green actually ran circles around Chucky then as a quarterback guru.

  22. bucyea Says:

OAR, respectfully, Gruden is an egomaniac. IMO, he has no intention of building a “winner’ just winning for himself, via FA, and taking over teams on that already have alot of talent. where do you think is next coachin’ gig will be?….Dallas or Cleveland. Dont get me wrong, Gruden won a SB for this team, BUT he did not build it, and IMO does not have the patience to go thru the pains of building a team. EGOMANIAC!. iT’S about Gru not about the long term success of the team, IMO. As for King, Gradk, Simms, Johnson, Gruden had no time to go thru the growing pains of developing a QB, and the draft is a whole nother story.
Dom/Morris have gotten better 7th rounders and FA’s than Gru/allen had in their entire drafts.

  23. OAR Says:

    bucyea
Again, blah, blah, blah! Heard it ALL before. Old news and opinions. Could really care less. My post was about King and watching Gruden’s show! I don’t care who he was going to watch/listen to or what he does! My post was not about Gruden and his time with the Bucs!?

  24. OAR Says:

    Mr Football,
    Ok I’ll take that challenge!
Besides Cunningham not being able to adjust to westcoast offense, nagging INJURIES were a problem with him, too! He didn’t even play in 1996 for Vikings, even though he was on their team. Hmmm???? (1995 being his last year in Philly). Then in 1997 he only played in only 6 games, starting 3. Now in 1998, 2 years after Gruden ran him off (so you say?), he did finally get to play in 15 games and did very well. In 1999 guess what his injuries plagged him again and he only played in 6 games!
I guess injuries are Gruden’s fault too, huh?
BTW With a moniker like that, you need to know more!

  25. OAR Says:

    Joe,
Dennis Green couldn’t get anything out Shaun King, either! Remember King did sign with Arizona? Played in 3 games and had 1 TD and 4 INTs!
