No Thank You On Cromartie

April 9th, 2011

Apparently not a believer in Mark Dominik’s aversion to big-name free agents and his desire for high-character players, Disney blogger Pat Yasinskas made two references Friday to the Bucs considering condom hater free agent cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

Yasinskas fired off these comments during a live chat on some website called ESPN.com.

(Normally Joe would re-print the comments here, but Joe can’t bear to do it as the idea of Cromartie on the Bucs is ludicrous.)

Maybe Joe’s too conservative, but Cromartie, who has struggled to pay child support for his nine children despite a lucrative contract, is not someone Joe wants to cheer for anytime soon.

Plus, he definitely would qualify as a big-name free agent, and every savvy Bucs fan and observer knows Dominik won’t go there unless the salary cap floor forces his hand.

    Joe,
How could you not like this guy? He produces huge on the field. And he would be cheaper than Nnamdi. I would still prefer Nnamdi, so don’t get me wrong. But, if we could get Cromartie for a reasonable price. Do it ALL DAY!! So what he can’t pay his child support??? What does that have to do with football? He stays out of trouble and plays his a$$ off and produces. Imagine either Cromartie/Nnamdi paired up with Jimmy Smith. Thats a great combo. And who knows what will happen with Talib so I won’t talk about him.

  2. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

And Jimmy Smith would be the player I hope we would draft if we stayed at the #20 pick. Hopefully, we can find a way to trade up and get Robert Quinn. SF seems like the best option as far as a trade partner goes. And thats all assuming Quinn would still be there at pick #7. But God our DL would be insane if we could add him. He is by far the top DE in this class IMO.

  3. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

And if we do draft a RB. Would you rather have Demarco Murray or Dion Lewis as a 3rd or 4th round pick?? I think either one would make a solid compliment to Blount. Murray has injury issues and Lewis has size issues. I think Murray if healthy has potential to be a beast and I think we could get him in the 4th. He should be a 1st round talent if it wasn’t for the injuries. He could be the next Mike Williams for us if we could get him in the 4th!!

  4. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

And…what do you think about Terrence Toliver from LSU. He is 6’3″ with good speed and above average blocker. 5th or 6th round??? He would also give competition to Briscoe. That would give us 4 very solid/reliable WR’s and take any extra pressure off of Straughter, who could focus on returning kicks and being a good option as a #5 WR.

Yasinksas is right in spirit but wrong on the player on this one. I doubt Dominik would break the youth rule to throw the bank at 30 year old Asomugha but he I wouldn’t be surprised for him to sign a younger second tier free agent cornerback. However, if he does it will be the Bengals Johnathan Joseph and not Cromartie.

  6. gitarlvr Says:

Funky monkey- Yeah we have already been burned big time by poor character guys in the secondary like T-jax and Talib so lets go ahead and sign deadbeat dad cromartie and draft Jimmy Smith. We might as hold tryouts at the local state prison work releases to find our starting secondary.

    Hey Pete Dutcher,

I thought you said you aren’t a Rays fan and that you’ve never posted on Rays Index??

I’m not a baseball fan at all…for this reason.

Even so, I had thought the Rays would never have anyone exposed for using drugs. They seemed a good and clean team.

They probably still are. Manny came from the outside. But this will still hurt them.

I was actually on the verge of watching a few full Rays games last year (watched parts of games), but after seeing them gut the team in the off season, there’s no way I can justify my own interest in such a sport/team.

May not be received well, but that’s just how I feel. As I said…I’m not a baseball fan. But I doubt I’m the only fringe viewer out here.

If they had not gutted the team, I was actually planning to watch some games, which might have lead to me attending some games. They hurt themselves.

This latest Manny news comes at a time when most non-fans consider baseball a joke because of the steroids issue. They no longer view the HoF as an accurate accounting of records.

To be honest, this latest news breaks my heart, because I truly wanted to Rays to win me over. The presence of a big hitter like Manny (as far as this non-fan knows) gave a small reason to show a little interest after the gutting. Now that reason is gone. I will be amazed if any games sell out this year at all.

the jets actually had to pay off cromartie’s back child support in order for him to even change residence to new york. i hope they dont even think about touching that piece of sh!t.

  9. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

He has no legal issues other than his child support. That is no comparison to Talib or T Jax. And he is more talented than either one of those. Joseph would be a solid pick up as well. But Cromartie is a play maker, which is more than we can say about any of our other DB’s. OMG he doesn’t pay his child support!!!! Big deal. He’s not out shooting people or getting charged with drugs…

  10. gitarlvr Says:

funky munkey- If Cromartie an Joseph are both relatively equal in talent(they are- cromartie is more like talib- gambler who makes more big plays- joseph- solid cover corner who doesn’t gamble but gives up less big plays) why not take the safer guy?? Especially in light of the recent character concerns in the secondary. It seems like a no brainer to me.

i would really love bring jonathan joseph to tampa, i mean, its all about schemes and personality, rah can bring it on joseph, i think CB can be added at 5th round, and rah develops him like he knows

  12. Achetti813 Says:

No reason to break the bank on a CB unless we can get joseph at the right price. Pass rush will make our CBs better. Everyone still needs to remember Talib could be back in a bucs jersey if he didnt fire that gun. And Talib if he comes back with a pass rush could be a top CB with a Big time contract due soon

  13. Achetti813 Says:

Also everyone talks about how we have so much cap eventually these players that make up out young core will need to be resigned and want big contracts (Freeman, Blount, Williams, Benn, McCoy already has big money, any DE drafted if they pan out) in a couple years these guys will be stars and want star money to stay

All you have to do is get Warrick Dunn to mentor Cromantie and let Dunns charity build a ward for all of Domoniques baby mamas and illigetimates. Its actually a better idea the more you think about it. That’s a win win!

    #winning!!!

Problem with that is, Dunn is not going to help the Bucs out any time soon. He’s a part-owner of the Dixie Chicks.

    @HIRE GREG OLSON!
Your point might be valid except for two reasons:
    1) That quote was not from Rays Index…it was from JoeRaysFan.
    2) That quote was just made last week, not in the distant past…but after you and I exchanged words.

Epic Fail, my friend. If you’re going to call someone out, do it right.

And, even so…if you recall from our “exchange” a few weeks back, I said that the only time I posted on Rays Index was once…to congraduate them on their Series trip that year.

HIRE GREG OLSON!, you see what you are trying to do here, right? Trying to win one over on someone that really doesn’t care to lower himself to such a level. You try to call me out…have I ever done the same to you? Nope. Most I’ve done is disagree with you…so it’s good to see you are handling that in such a mature manner.

  17. Pete Dutcher Says:

Incidently, Hire…you seemed to not actually read what I posted there last week. It’s right there in your quote:

May not be received well, but that’s just how I feel. As I said…I’m not a baseball fan. But I doubt I’m the only fringe viewer out here.

  18. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @HIRE GREG OLSON!
Ah…I see…I didn’t even know JoeRaysFan led to the Rays Index.

Either way, you still didn’t win one over, since it’s a post from last week, not before we had our exchange.

  19. Pete Dutcher Says:

No comment I guess? I thought so.

  20. Funky Munkey Says:

I would be estatic to get either Cromartie or Joseph. Couldn’t complain about either one of them!
