The Merits And Faults Of Michael Clayton

June 2nd, 2010

The subject of blocking icon Michael Clayton is a hot-button issue for Bucs fans. So too does the subject bring out the emotions in objective, reasoned journalists.

Such is the case for Woody Cummings and Anwar Richardson of the Tampa Tribune. In this exclusive TBO.com video, the two Bucs beat writers debate the merits and faults of Clayton and whether the Bucs should keep the blocking icon for the final year of his contract.

The sparring of words turns spirited but not over the top. In short, it’s informative but also entertaining.

What do the duo suggest Bucs general manager Mark Dominik do with Clayton? Well, Joe’s not going to spill the beans. You’ll just have to click on the link above to find out. Trust Joe, you will be cheating yourself if you don’t view that video. It’s good stuff!

Anwar’s right – Roy is wrong.

BTW at the end of the video Anwar show’s Clayhand’s great blocking form!

  2. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Too bad Cummings doesn’t even really think that.

These guys are just taking the opposite side of the issue and having a fake debate because it’s supposed to be psuedo-interesting. Kinda like that crappy show on ESPN, “pardon the interruption” , with Tony Kornheiser.

Not true Radio Mushmouth. In the middle of last season Joe was talking to Cummings about Clayton and Cummings said the same thing to Joe nearly a year ago as he spoke in that video.

Joe knows Richardson has written months ago about the stance he took on Clayton in that video.

This isn’t fake or forced. In fact, it’s damned good.

The more videos we have about Tampa Football the better, IMHO.
I like the new TBO video channel, I found out about it here a few days ago.

Just got around to watching the video and I want to point something out. If you aren’t a starter, ie in the top 3, as a WR you HAVE to be a major special teams contributor. That’s what’s missing in this debate and any debate about Clayton making the team. He would have to be willing to run down on kickoff team and punt team and block on kickoff return etc just like Mo Stovall and actually be good at it. I don’t see that happening and thus don’t see a way for him to be on the team, its really that simple. And if you hear anybody arguing about him and they don’t bring up special teams just know that they are blowing smoke.

  6. Joe Says:

    Real good point Steve.

Did you notice that’s the first thing they brought up when Mo Stovall’s name came up?

  7. Eric Says:

IMO Cummings is right about the bucs thinking on Clayton. They will give him a chance and he likely will be on the regular season roster.

  8. Louie Says:

Clayton has pictures of Cummings too. That’s the ONLY reason he’s on the team. Can anyone name a receiver that has done less over the long term and made more money doing it?

    CUT Clayton NOW!!!

  9. Joe Says:

    Louis:

LOL Clayton is on the Bucs because of what Cummings said in the video??? 🙂

  10. Louie Says:

OK, so the blocking icon is on the team because they wasted so much money on him and don’t want to admit the mistake. I thought this team wasn’t afraid to admit mistakes (fired both coordinators)?

I love how Cummings proclaims the blocking icon will be on the regular season roster (like he knows anything!). If that’s truly the case, the WR’s we’ve got must be pretty pathetic. If they don’t cut him before training camp, I hope he gets injured so he goes on IR and they have to pay him. Poetic justice.

  11. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Well apparentely I underestimated how stupid Roy Cummings is then…

  12. tampa2 Says:

I gues Jon Gruden’s decision to bench Clayton and let his contract run out made him a jewel in Dominik & Morris’s eyes. Now, the least they could do is admit their mistake, cut Clayton, and fill his spot with a productive player!
