“Don’t Believe What The Media Said Before”

May 3rd, 2010

The Buccaneers are really working hard to promote their young draft picks.

Joe can’t blame the Bucs for thrusting them into the spotlight. From a marketing standpoint — and a winning standpoint – the Bucs need these guys prepared for high expectations.

In honor of the draft picks, the good folks at Buccaneers.com have launched a new “Who is?” series.

Joe really enjoyed the Scott Smith interview of wide receiver Mike Williams. The rookie dropped the interesting nugget that his mother is his mentor and she taught him how to play football and was a player herself.

Williams also continued to discredit the media, which, along with Mark Dominik, labeled him a quitter out of college.

“I think fans should know, like, don’t believe what the media said before. (Laughs) But, no, fans should know I’m a good person,” Williams said. “And I’m somebody that’s going to go out here and work hard. And I’m tyring to win, just like everyone else. Tyring to bring another Super Bowl here.”

Long ago, Joe was excited by Williams. Watching the NFL combine on the real-man NFL Network, it was obvious that Williams was loaded with Pro Bowl talent.

But as much as Joe is pulling for Williams, Joe just can’t expect much from him in 2010. At the end of the day, he’s a rookie fourth-rounder. If he can hold on to the ball, ring up 20+ catches and score a few touchdowns, Joe will be more than satisfied and will look for him to improve significantly in 2011.

Would your expectations change if he was a 1st or 2nd rounder? That is his talent area. He fell because of the commonly used “character issues” tag. He seems like a good kid. No reason to believe he can’t be very productive – very.

  2. Jerry Says:

Brandon Marshall was a 4th round pick.

    Joe here,

bucfanjeff – Talent isn’t all it takes in the NFL, so Joe can’t look at him as a first or second-rounder. It’s not fair to Williams. You’re right. Joe sees no reason for him not to be very productive. Joe just doesn’t expect that at all in Year 1. …Just trying to keep it real. …Hopefully he goes out there and averages 20 yards a catch and snatches a bunch of TDs and opens up the field for Winslow and Benn. Joe’s just not counting on it.

  4. TpaBayFlyFisher Says:

If “charater” was not an issue, one of the 31 other teams would have taken him before the Bucs did. That said, if he plays well here and doesn’t get into trouble, good for him and the Buc’s staff that took the chance. If he is a flop on the field or gets into trouble, the 31 other GMs will be laughing…..again.

  5. Joe Says:

    Fly:

Has the Gulf of Texaco put a pinch into you and the little Flys’ sailing trips?

  6. Eric Says:

Receiver success is a mixed bag for rookies. Guys like Harvin and Jackson have done well and helped right away, although with very good experienced QB’s. On balance, high rookie production is more unlikely than likely especially with a very young QB.

I suppose we will find out when guys like polamalu are trying to take his head off.

  7. Mike Says:

    Joe,
I would be very disappointed if he doesn’t step in and make a contribution like a #2 receiver.

  8. TpaBayFlyFisher Says:

Joe, for the Flys the spill has had no impact. The College of Chucktown has qualified for the sailing national championships for both guys and dolls and it will be sailed at the home of the UW Badgers…….yea I know they thumped the Canes in some meaningless football bowl game, but Fly has secured permission to attend anyway………..thanks for asking.

  9. Radio Mushmouth Says:

    Don’t believe them , huh??

It doesn’t matter what we believe , you are here now . So, how about you prove what a “good guy” you are and stay out of trouble , unlike your Syracuse buddy, Tanard .

  10. Radio Mushmouth Says:

    Also:

I think Joe forgets how pathetic our WR core is , and that this kid is going to be forced into a starting role whether he is ready or not. 20 receptions ain’t gonna cut it…

  11. Gary Says:

Before he contributes, he needs to change that do. Whats up with those rat tails/cornrows/mullet combination. Come on man, your about to make some money!

  12. up the gut Says:

Let’s hope Williams is assigned No. 80 when the season begins!

  13. Morgan Says:

Heard Williams on WDAE (Plug: Pulawski is one of the better sports talk guys around and needs his own show – hopefully he’ll take Deumigs).

He sounds like he’s got a lot of heart, is willing to take a hit for the team. Look forward to seeing him play this season.

Just keep him away from Michael Clayton so he doesn’t develop bad habits.

  14. Scott Says:

He just can’t take responsibility for the cheating issue. I would respect him a lot more if he would drop the ‘I innocently had some notes at the exam’ b.s.. Having notes during an exam is known as cheating and he is lucky he didn’t get kicked out of school completely over it.

  15. gruss222 Says:

Give Justin Sileo’s time slot and make everybody happy!

  16. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Won’t happen Gruss…all Clear Channel cares about is ratings….what they haven’t figured out yet is that they could put a chimp on the air and still get good ratings.

We don’t listen to 620 because of thier awesome personalities, we listen to them because they are the only that gets a decent recpetion.

Try driving around town listening to 1010 …you can ALMOST make out a voice behind all the white noise….ALMOST.

  17. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I hear 620 and 1010 just fine here in east Tampa and Brandon in my truck, and switch back and forth at will. I like Justin too, Duemig, Dan Sileo, and Ian Beckles. But the minute they start talking about Tiger Woods or basketball, I simply switch stations. I do the same during most advertisements, except Morgan and Morgan. For some strange reason, whenever John Morgan says “Morgan and Morgan, for the People” I clench my fist in my truck, and say “Offices, Tampa”.
