Joel Glazer Comes Out Firing At Dan Sileo

Joel Glazer

In a scathing press release on Buccaneers.com, Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer pulled no punches, going after WDAE-AM 620 morning host Dan Sileo.

Sileo, a former Bucs player who has a chequered past, claimed, in so many words, the Glazer family was a victim of Bernie Madoff’s scams and as a result, have put the Bucs up for sale to cover their losses.

Glazer blasted Sileo. Joe is posting the release in full:

Statement Regarding False Report
Oct 29, 2009

Statement by Joel Glazer, Co-Chairman, Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

“The report today by WDAE’s Dan Sileo about our family and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is 100 percent false.

“The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not, nor have they ever been for sale. In addition, our family or any of our related companies have never invested one penny with Bernie Madoff.

“The report is baseless, irresponsible and slanderous. This type of behavior by Mr. Sileo and his company Clear Channel will be dealt with in the appropriate manner.”

Only thing Joe has to say is, “WOW!”

Sounds like Dan might be getting a letter from the Glazers lawyers.

  2. David Says:

Part of me kind of wanted new ownership…

  3. Mr. Lucky Says:

Ok lets take bets on the next WDAE morning host…

    I vote for Justin Polowski!

  4. BucFan South Tampa Says:

Thank God Dan has “Culpepper and Kurland” to lean on. Start sharpening your pencils Brad, Im thinking the Glazers can bring some heat………

  5. nick Says:

Dan’s a douchbag. Whether the reports are true or not, or he is credible or not, he’s a douch. All he does is slander everything from Gator football to Bucs football. We don’t need a guy like that on the radio spreading negativity, whether its part of his job or not. I wouldn’t miss him if he was kicked off the air. He thinks he’s the Bubba the love sponge of Sports talk

  6. Raynaldo Says:

JP is practically a morning show in PM drive. Plug them in.

  7. mike Says:

Sileo is an imbecile. Replace him with Justin. Then replace the Glazers with DeBartolo and we’ll call it a day.

I hate all the New York douches that call into his show to talk about the Yankees. Like anyone gives a sh*t around here.

  8. Jason Says:

I have to agree with Mike… “Replace him with Justin.” Dan Sileo’s show is terrible. I am surprised anyone was listening to hear his comments.

  9. BucFan South Tampa Says:

Disagree. Sileo has been right about a most things, wrong on some. He blasted the hiring of Coach Rah in Feb, no one would disagree now. He called the Gruden haters on the carpet for their hatred of Gruden for the last few years, all the while saying that it was the lack of quality with the players. When everyone complained about Gruden’s draft picks and free agent signings, he said it was the Glazers. We now know that Allen and Gruden had 2 million each year to spend on our new “talent”. Thats why we went after retreads, criminals, wannabe’s, and has beens. They dont cost as much. He is a lot more right on things than Big Dog, Steve Duemig thats for sure.
BTW, Sileo also said the Kraft of the Pats also had dealings with Madoff.
Anybody hear anything out of Boston?
It will come out in the depositions when the Glazers sue Clear Channel and Sileo. Then we will really know the truth, and thats when Brad Culpepper gets to cash in.

  10. jason Says:

Dont hate on Dan he just tells it the way it is. If you dont like him dont listen. I have been listening to him 4 awihle any he speaks the truth and all you bandwagon fans cant take it. GO YANKEES!

  11. jfgobucs Says:

What Dan said was “In his opinion he thought the Glazers were going to put the Buc’s up for sell…

  12. mike Says:

The Madoff claim is very suspect. It’s highly likely that a 450M loss from a big name investor like the Glazers would be leaked by now (Wilpon’s name was leaked almost right after the scandal broke). This also shouldn’t be too difficult for someone to verify which makes him more of an idiot for going on the air without solid evidence to back up his claim.

  13. Paul Says:

Glazers have no leg to stand on in my opinion. Dan Sileo is doing an opinion driven show and last time I check the 1st amendment is still valid. The Bucs are in the public eye. This is a dumb move by the Glazers among others. They elevated the conversation above the local talk shows. Now if this thing spreads, the Glazers will have to answer questions they did not want to address. Hopefully Clearchannel will not cave in which I’m sure they will not. If BSPN gets a hold of this…whooohoho.

This season got more interesting. By the way when there is smoke there is fire. Alot of people thought the Bucs might be on sale but now it seems that the Glazer’s want to stamp this out, so they might be some shred of truth in the rumors sorrounding their “financial difficulties.”

And oh yeah if this goes to court, Sileo’s lawyers will likely want disclosure of the Glazer’s finances. Probably a counter suit would also be added in there as well. Just playing quarterback lawyer here but I’ll ask my brother in-law who’s been a lawyer for years next time a see him.

  14. matt sellers Says:

I think the bucs owners are a bunch of pudgy nerds anyway, I wish they would sell the team! Oh, and life would great if I never had to see or listen to any person from new yak ever again. You really can’t lose!!

  15. Tyler Says:

“nor have they ever been for sale…”. Umm, weren’t they for sale when you bought them????

  16. Jason Says:

Paul, it is true the Bucs are in the “public eye,” except Dan made comments directed at the Glazers. They could argue slander since the statement is false and malicious that damages their reputation.

  17. RastaMon Says:

OK……so the never invested a “penny”
inquiring minds want to know how many dollars…..
seriously I’ve wondered “if” the Glazers had exposure to Madoff
and was called a racist by a few nitwits here in joebucsfan’com
for suggesting the the Glazer Palm Beach Jews perhaps where linked with Madoff,Palm Beach Jew……bottom line
the Glazers are hurting for cash and play tight tight tight…hoping to sweat this economic quagmire out

  18. Sileoisadumbass Says:

Sileo is loud-mouth jackhole who is now pretending to be a sports journalist with this so-called “breaking news”. Memo to “Silly-ho”: you are talk show host who gives his opinion. Do us a favor and leave the journalism to the professionals.

  19. Pete Says:

Frankly its quite a journalistic coup for Sileo…he got some member of the Glazier family out of the cave and speaking…sort of…to the media. Given the non existent media access to the Glaziers this clearly forced them to open the speaking tube at least.

To bad they don’t have the balls to have a real presser (with a non fawning press corps) concerning $, the team(s) they own and the state of affairs.

Kudos to Sileo for rattling their cage. Of course he now must reap what he has sown. He may lose his press credentials to cover the Bucs and maybe more.

It ain’t slander if its true and if it can’t be proved untrue?

  20. Pete Says:

Dan Sileo the Glazier Taser! 😉

  21. ChuckInJax Says:

I think we all missed the single greatest thing about this press release today…One of the Glazer Boys actually UTTERED a statment about our beloved Bucs (their investment vehicle). This is certainly a start…Maybe in their next statement they can address the fans (customers), yes those poor bastards shelling out their hard-earned dollars, as to the plan and vision they have for righting this ship, so to speak! I say we just keep ’em talking, eventually they’ll actually SAY something!

  22. ChuckInJax Says:

Sorry Pete! Looks like you caught it!

  23. Doug Beckman Says:

It’s hard to beleive that Joe Glazer is coming out of the closet before Halloween, he must have decided to protect the Glazers reputation on the story that came to light, but there reputation was tarnished long time ago
when Malcom Glazer was a property land lord in New York City, wow if Joe
Glazer is coming out to try to make the Tampa Bay Area to beleive that the Buc’s aren’t in financial trouble, then the Glazer Family better get in touch with me as i have a real deal for them i have some ocean front property in Arizona to sell to the Glazer Family

  24. Matthew Says:

If the Glazers are so broke guys… Why did they jump up the Forbes billion dollar list with a 100 million profit this last year…. I think there dad was who wanted to win, he’s very ill and about to go. The kids just care about the bottom line not putting out a winner.

  25. RastaMon Says:

Matthew…..the dad could care less about football,my opinion, the G’Boyz have/had the passion to play with the family money.
I still and always will owe them a debt of gratitude for turning the franchise around!
If you were at the first training camps at Pigeon Poop Stadium and saw them anxious to shake the hand or bend an ear to any and all……you’d understand the G’Boyz sincerity.
I still have a ticket stub autographed by the tottering old man in the Ole Sombrero as he made his way through the stands in the south end zone…in a suit in ungodly temperatures at an early season September game……
I have larger axes to grind in the world today than the state of

    the Glazers operating the Bucs……

and I’d bet dollars to bagels they’d rather watch the team on Sundays we all want to see……
enough with this Cheap crap !

  26. JK Says:

What Dan should have said is as long as the Glazers are profiting on the Bucs they will not be Four Sail.

  27. george c. costanza Says:

  28. Jeff M. Says:

Bring on Justin …see ya Dan!

  29. Paul Says:

    Jason,

Again I’m not a lawyer, but don’t you have to prove that it is slander when you are suing someone for slander? This might not be the road the Glazers want to take since they will likely have to disclose financial or personal company records to prove that it is slander. Just speculating, but in any case I reread the statement by the Glazers and it does not specifically states that they are going to sue or pursue this legally so I guess the point is kind of moot at the moment. My guess is that they will be less than cooperative with ClearChannel since I think they do have shows like Raheem’s and other Bucs players. So Glazers might have leverage through that route.

  30. PetetheHat Says:

Sileo (mr. negativity), won’t be missed if he’s gone because of this. But, from a listener’s standpoint this doesn’t seem a reason to get rid of him. His ineptitude and negativity and lack of overall sports knowledge is enough reason. And the the guy pumping up Sileo and bad mouthing the Big Dog your the moron. Duemig has more sports expertise and knowledge in his little finger than Sileo has in his whole body (including his pea brain).

  31. BigMacAttack Says:

Joel Glazer can SUCK MY @$$, whether Sileo is right or not. F U Joel, this is the last year you are getting my money. F U. F U. F U.

  32. Sileoisadumbass Says:

I’ve been waiting years to say this…Adios “Silly-Ho”! I can only hope “Duemig” & “The Not So Fabulous Sports Blob” will also one day be history. **Editor’s note: Comment edited**

  33. Laura Says:

It’s about time the Glazers got passionate about something, because they surely seem disconnected with this football team! Now that Malcolm is not running the day to day operations, he left the monkeys in charge of the zoo. I worked with Joel Glazer on his home and can attest to his frugality which is obviously reflected in their unwillingness to pay for decent players. I am currently and will always be a season ticket holder, but it makes me ill to think that a dime of my hard earned money helps line these Scrooges pockets!

  34. Scott Hathaway Says:

It’s funny how the Glazers will try to deflect attention of their misleadings of the Bucs team on a Radio Show Host.

Honestly, they bought the team to make money. After the Super Bowl win, they have lost interest in the team. You can see that with the recent drafts, the bring in of Overage players. Now they buy the Soccer team and what about the Bucs? We get stuck with a guy that has no coaching experience at any level.

The right thing to do is fire the whole staff and start over with either Shannahan or Cowher!!!

  35. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

The Glazers get such a bad rap! Well, it is 2012 and guess what ? The Glazers have brought us a great new coach, and emptied their pockets to bring us a bunch of free agents. We are well on our way to being a playoff team again.
    Thanks to the Glazers!
